HNY, and a hand asked for...

[edit]

Hi Ser, HNY stands for Happy New Year. Thanks for... several things, including things that made you laugh. You should be banned for that, don'tchya knoaw, that's strictly anti-political whatever (thank god for that). But this is not why I'm taking your time for. Here is the matter:

Sometime in 2014 I wrote this fr:Ferrier antique de Tannerre-en-Puisaye and translated it in my User:Basicdesign/sandbox. The word "ferrier" does not exist in English. So I asked around for help for the title, see here and in the sandbox talk page (for the research in wiki, let alone the bulk of the research elsewhere). Didn't find a solution (because there is no word that fits the case, neither bloomery (the thing is on another level altogether, a bloomery does not use 75 acres of space), nor ironworks (which implies a forge), nor anything we could think of. Submitted the article anyway. It was refused, as per ongoing rules and contrary to good common sense. Still. It's a reasonably good article, refs are ok (there is a hell of a lot worse here on that aspect) and an interesting subject that goes well beyond local interest, you'll see all that if you can find it. As the largest ferrier in western Europe (along with another one somewhere further down south of France), it's a large part of the history of the area, of the region, of the country and of Europe. Plus we usually do a nice roast of wild boar + trimmings and dessert (and veggy option too, if asked for ahead of the day), all according to Antique or Middle Age recipies, each year in September for the French Heritage Days/wkend, if ever you come nearby :) I now live nearby said place, I can see for myself that it's got more and more UK visitors, a few Americans too manage to get lost enough to find it and some days the place is packed with German visitors, most of whom speak English too. An English article wouldn't come amiss.

So the article is well up to wkpdia standards of acceptation. Remains the fact that the word ferrier does not exist in English. So what?! As if that was the first happenstance for that sort of thing. Needless to say, no-one can find a translation for a word that exists in one language only. Believe me in that I have worked on it. The only way to "resolve the language issue", as per the reason given for refusal, is to accept the French word. And that's it. I don't see the pbm in that circumstance, and that's me saying it - who near-systematically translate foreign words in the local wiki language even against the so-self-called avant-garde opinion. I'd put the word in italics in the title to be clear about its foreign origin.

I am addressing you on the basis of this: Wikipedia:Petition against IAR abuse, "If a rule prevents you from improving or maintaining Wikipedia, ignore it" (I've done plenty of that, seldom intentionally/knowingly). It says that maybe you can actually really act upon your thinking and not just apply rules. So could you please-pretty-please * find the thing, * have a look at it, * perhaps take the time to check that I'm not making up any of it, * not spoil the new year with the insane demand of finding what doesn't exist, and * accept the idea that like quite a few other articles here, the title may include a foreign word? Thank you very much for at least trying. And my best wishes again :) Basicdesign (talk) 15:13, 5 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks much, for the good wishes and for looking into that. Sorry I did not answer earlier, it's logging time down here, coming back home a total wreck not even the courage to turn PC on. Day off today, hurray for mechanic trouble (for once)!! You look like a busy man too. If there are no news from you on that ferrier article when the logging is done, I'll come back to you. Have a good day meanwhile. Basicdesign (talk) 08:03, 11 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Amantio di Nicolao, I need your help to delete(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nehru_College_of_Engineering_and_Research_Centre) this Wikipedia page of Nehru college. Lots of superfluous cat-a-lots

[edit]

Hi Ser Amantio di Nicolao

Something is going very badly wrong here. Please may I ask you to give this careful attention?

I just spotted two edits by you to Rama Devi (Bihar politician) on 20 December 2015, both of which added superfluous categories.

The first of those two edits[1] was " Copying from Category:12th Lok Sabha members to Category:20th-century Indian politicians". That was un-needed, because Category:12th Lok Sabha members was already a subcat of Category:20th-century Indian politicians, and had been since Dec 2015[2] ... and per WP:SUBCAT, a page should not usually be in boh a category and its subcategory

The second edit[3] was "Category:15th Lok Sabha members to Category:21st-century Indian politicians". Again, Category:15th Lok Sabha members had been a sub-cat of Category:21st-century Indian politicians since DEc 2015[4].

Both of those edits were made using Cat-a-Lot, so I checked your contribs for that day, starting [5]. Over the next 8 or so 500-entry contribs lists, there are over 4,000 such cases of superflous categories being added to members Indian and Moldovan legislatures by term.

This causes un-neeeded category clutter on the articles. For example Rama Devi (Bihar politician) is un-necessarily in both Category:20th-century Indian politicians and Category:21st-century Indian politicians.

And it stretches even further than the 4,000+ pages mentioned above. I did a spot check of members of Indian state legislatures, and found an edit from 21 December 2016[6] to Kundanlal Dholakia, with an edit summary "Category:Bombay State MLAs 1957-60 to Category:20th-century Indian politicians". Again, this was superflous, because had been in since its creation[7] in June 2016. That suggests to me that you may have done this to all members of Indian state legislatures by term.

And how many other legislature categories did you do this to? So far, I have spotted India and Moldova, but what about others?

These superfluous categories should be removed, but they cannot be removed using Cat-a-Lot. It will require an AWB run though the members categories, which will be a huge job, with a lot of clicking the "save button", though it could be done by a bot.

Please can you get to work identifying how many such superflous cat-a-lots you did, and then start cleaning this up?

And please be more cautious in your future uses of Cat-a-Lot?

Thanks! --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 21:34, 11 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@BrownHairedGirl: Well...I don't agree that it is overcategorization, exactly. Because I feel that the categories in question, while they overlap, serve different purposes.
For Indian politicians, for instance: categorizing them by term of state legislature is helpful to understand their position in the context of the history of the state. Categorizing them nationally, I think, helps to relate them to other Indian politicians of the period, both local and national. The underlying reason for them to be in each category is different.
I also tend to think that placing politicians in [numbered parliament] categories (i.e., "Members of the 113th United States Congress", were that category to exist), while useful, isn't very clear or helpful to people who don't know the years covered. So putting the politician-by-century category in place is easier for the casual user to read. It encourages easier navigation, to me.
Hopefully I've explained my rationale clearly? I know what I mean and what I'm trying to say, but it makes more sense in my head sometimes. :-) --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 22:27, 11 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Ser Amantio
Thanks for the prompt reply. I think you explain yourself clearly.
But look, WP:SUBCAT is a long-standing guideline, and I don't see any of the by-country-by-century categories tagged as non-diffusing, which they should be if you want to populate them like this.
I don't see any evidence that you have gained any consensus for yout decision to treat these categories as an exception to WP:SUBCAT before doing so many thousands of edits. Have I have missed some discussion, please can you point me to it?
As to the substance of your argument, the logic seems flawed to me.
After your additions, Category:20th-century Indian politicians now contains 2260 articles, which is far too big for useful navigation. Most categories of that size are subdivided, as these ones already were.
When a reader looks at the listings for a by-century, there is no indication of the years involved, so the fact that there are no years listed in the title of Category:Members of the 4th Lok Sabha is not offset by adding the articles to a broad by-century category.
In any case there are 113 by-legislature--by-term subcats of Category:20th-century Indian politicians, 100 of those do include the years ... yet it seems even so that you have copied all their contents to Category:20th-century Indian politicians. So that part of your argument is contradicted by your practice.
Looking at Category:21st-century politicians, it seems that you did this to a whole range of categories, leaving for example Category:21st-century American politicians with a whopping 10,102 articles. Navigating that makes looking for a needle in a haystack easy, as it is almighty jumble of everything from county commissioners to state legislators to members of the US Congress.
I just looked at Category:20th-century Israeli politicians, and it seems that you have done the same thing there. The worst of it is that it all appears to be simply a matter of using AWB or Cat-a-lot to copy from one category to its parent. I am not seeing any sign of any effort to categorise the people who were omitted from Category:20th-century Indian politicians ... so as far as I can see, none of this vast run category addition added any new info.
So, please, will you revert this? --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 23:04, 11 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@BrownHairedGirl:I do agree that the categories are becoming rather large, and that was something that I considered as I began my edits...ultimately, though I have found that large categories exist elsewhere on Wikipedia and appear to be considered viable, less as navigation tools in and of themselves and more as a way to understand information as it is presented to the user. What it comes down to, in the end, to me, is what the article looks like to the reader, and the edits I made were considered with that in mind. The category tree is a useful tool...and honestly, yes, many times I am doing my best to work against overcategorization and prune it down. But sometimes I think it's counterintuitive - and this, I think, is one of those times.
The older I get, the more I find myself trying to look at articles from the perspective of what a new editor might see. Which is why I try to bring some kind of standard language to the categories that I use. Perhaps this is wrong...I just think this place can be a bit frightening and confusing as is, and I'm trying to mitigate some of that.
I will say that I used to have some questions as to the necessity of the by-century categories at all; having become more involved, in recent years, in developing metrics as part of my editing, I've come to see their use. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 01:58, 12 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm. I can see your logic, tho I don't agree with it.
However, my main concern is that you appear to have taken a unilateral decision to simply ignore the long-standing guidance at WP:SUBCAT, and in our discussion here you haven't even acknowledged it. I find it rather alarming that when we are talking about what I now realise to be tens of thousands of articles, the basic categorisation guidelines do not even appear to figure in your considerations.<sad face>
A lot of this was done using Cat-aLot, but a lot was done using WP:AWB, and WP:AWBRULES is quite clear about this: 2. Abide by all Wikipedia guidelines, policies and common practices and 2. Do not make controversial edits with it. Seek consensus for changes that could be controversial at the appropriate venue; village pump, WikiProject, etc. "Being bold" is not a justification for mass editing lacking demonstrable consensus.
It seems to me that both of those AWB rules have been broken here.
So, please can you desist from any further such categorisation while we check where consensus lies?
I will now post at WT:CAT, to ask for other editors familiar with categorisation join this discussion and give their views.
Best wishes, --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 10:12, 12 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I have left a note at WT:Categorization#WP:SUBCAT_and_people-by-century_categories (permalink). Let's see what others have to say. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 10:20, 12 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

This is a general problem, not limited to this editor - see my comments on the general problem at WT:Categorization#WP:SUBCAT_and_people-by-century_categories. Mitch Ames (talk) 12:29, 12 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
(ec)Maybe so, @Mitch Ames, but this particular editor has been an extraordinarily prolific contributor to the problem.
I am trying to establish whether there is consensus to ask them to desist and revert. What's your view? --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 12:49, 12 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@BrownHairedGirl: I agree that the category duplication is incorrect (based on checking your examples, and your explanation of the problem). "Desist" is definitely appropriate here, at least pending discussion. "Revert" is probably appropriate, unless there's some good reason not to.
(By the way, your polite "desist ... while we check" request was perfectly reasonable in any case. There's no deadline, so it doesn't hurt to pause if there's some doubt, especially given the large number of edits involved.)
Mitch Ames (talk) 13:23, 12 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@BrownHairedGirl: - no need to worry. I hadn't planned on doing any more for a while, any way. I'll wander over and try to post something in the discussion when I have a chance later today. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 12:45, 12 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Cat-a-lot revisited

[edit]

Hi again Ser Amantio di Nicolao

I'm sorry for taking a while to get back to you.

I had hoped for a bigger response to this, but these things don't often get a big response these days.

However, I see no support for your desire to ignore WP:SUBCAT. So I don't think that there is any way to reasonably conclude that there is a consensus for what you did.

So please can you to revert this duplication? --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 00:20, 22 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Well...I'm afraid my opinion hasn't changed in the intervening weeks. Sorry to be a stick-in-the-mud over this, but I still think the system as it stands can be awfully confusing for new editors. Though I've not added the category to any new articles since. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 06:33, 22 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
That's a pity, Ser Amantio di Nicolao.
I had hoped that even if you hadn't changed your mind, you would respect the fact that there is not even a WP:LOCALCONSENSUS to create such a huge set of exceptions to WP:SUBCAT.
This is an important point. I disagree with your view about how to organise the categories, but I do respect it as having a reasoned basis. However, as I'm sure you know, en.wp works by consensus, and if you disagree with that consensus, you are free to try to change it, for example by RFC. However, it s not appropriate to simply work against the consensus on a huge scale, and then neither self-revert nor try to change consensus.
I am very surprised to see a nearly-12-years-in-post admin taking that view.
Please will you think again? --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 10:36, 25 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I will continue to mull it over, yes. But at this stage in the proceedings I would rather have a more detailed discussion. I think there are a lot of questions to be raised about the profession-by-century categories, and my sense is the situation has changed since the last time it was discussed. It may be time to touch up the policy. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 17:40, 25 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Again, I accept that you have a reasoned case for supporting a change in the policy. I disagree with it, but that's a separate issue.
Rather than a change in policy, I suspect that you might be better to pursue your idea by seeking consensus to work within the existing policy to make the by-century categs non-diffusing. I would disagree with that too, but it would be a less radical change.
However, I remain concerned that you don't seem to me to be taking very seriously the fact that you have acted on a huge scale to breach the existing policy, and that in doing so you have used tools which require you to have consensus for what you do.
It is now 6 weeks since I raised this with you. In that time I have done the spade work of inviting outside opinion, while you have done nothing to seek a broader discussion. You are very approachable about it, but I am frustrated that I still see no proactive effort from you to seek the change in consensus which you claim you want.
I am growing weary of politely trying to ask you to either demonstrate a consensus or revert. I don't want to assume motivation, but this lack of proactivity does appear to be compatible with a hope that if you do nothing, it will all go away.
So, at this point, please either a) revert, or b) take the steps to seek retrospective consensus.
If you don't want to do either of those, then sadly I think it will be time to take this another forum and seek some sort of enforcement action. That's not the way that I wanted this to go, but if you don't act, then I will. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 23:17, 25 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Very well. Where would you prefer I raise the request for consensus? I can think of several arenas, but as I never frequent any of them I don't know which would be best. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 02:18, 26 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again, Ser Amantio di Nicolao. Sorry for being slow to replying. I had thought you would ping me when you replied, and checked back when I realised that it was some time since I psted, and I hadn't been pinged.
I suggest that the RFC should be at WT:CAT, which is the usual place for discussing categorisation issues. Instructions on how to make discussion a formal RFC are at WP:RFC. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 10:33, 5 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again, Ser Amantio di Nicolao

Please can you tell me what is happening with the RFC? Where is it? (and please {{ping}} me me in your reply).

It is now two months since I first raised this, and so far your response has consistently been polite inaction. Unless there is some progress very soon, then I don't see any alternative to treating this as a WP:Fait accompli issue, and seeking enforcement action. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 08:51, 10 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@BrownHairedGirl: To put it bluntly: I have had neither the time nor the gumption to write up an RfC this week. I hope to have it done this weekend, but it may not happen until the beginning of next week, when I have a little more breathing space in my personal life. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 14:45, 10 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Ser Amantio di Nicolao, I am sorry to hear that you have been having difficulties, and of course real life has to come first. Good luck in sorting thigs out.
So no prob waiting a few days, or however long it takes for you find the headspace. But if it stretches beyond Monday or Tuesday, please can you let me know?
Sorry to be pushy, but this has dragged on for a long time with absolutely no proactivity from you at all, and I am finding it increasingly difficult to sustain the assumption of good faith. You have made over 900 edits since I responded to you last Tuesday, so it's not as if you had no time for Wikipedia. It's just that this hasn't gotten any priority.
I won't push you on this again. If you come back again to say you need more time, that's fine, so long as the delay isn't accompanied by hundreds of other edits -- because that would look like yet more avoidance, and if that's the case, then I'll go directly to seeking WP:FAIT enforcement. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 15:05, 10 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@BrownHairedGirl: RfC is here. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 01:06, 14 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

AWB glitch

[edit]

Hi Ser Amantio di Nicolao

what was going on in the AWB run which led to this edit[8] to Merja Lahtinen?

It added her to Category:21st-century Finnish politicians, but the article says nothing about her being a politician. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 21:22, 14 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@BrownHairedGirl: She, or someone of that name, is listed as a member of the Finnish Parliament. Let me investigate a bit - it's probably someone else of that name. Thanks for the catch - I do try to get things like that out of my lists when I clean them up, but they slip through from time to time. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 21:25, 14 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, not the same one - I found the politician's blog. I'll make the requisite changes. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 21:27, 14 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@BrownHairedGirl: Sorted it out. Her maiden name is the same as the married name of a recent Finnish MP. It had been handled as a redirect when it should have been handled as a hatnote. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 21:47, 14 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of Arasji

[edit]

The article Arasji has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

The title of this article is misspelled. We already have Arashi, Aruba, and I just copied there the map and info about nearby communities from here, so this is redundant, and the misspelling doesn't justify a redirect (especially since there are multiple Arashis, as in Arashi).

King and Queen pictures

[edit]

I just wanted to thank you for the photos you added to National Register of Historic Places listings in King and Queen County, Virginia. I spent Saturday the 21st in K&Q and surrounding counties, since weather was predicted to be good, but it was one of the foggiest days I can remember (I don't know that I've ever before encountered noontime and afternoon fog, except on a mountain), and your photos are vastly better than the ones I would have uploaded if you'd not visited those sites. I'll still be uploading some, including Northbank and Providence, but they're definitely just placeholders. Nyttend (talk) 02:25, 6 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

See the beginning of [9]. I've only once visited Hampton Roads and Richmond, and both were just driving through — I used the Bay Bridge/Tunnel to get Eastern Shore photos a month and a half ago, and I drove through Richmond on my way home on the night of the 21st. My big frustration with so many of these grand plantation houses (and even the not-so-grand ones) is that placeholders are the best we can do, given the massively long driveways, and with that bill in the House of Delegates that would restrict drone photography, I doubt we'll ever get good photos for many of them unless landowners decide to help. Jewish descent category

[edit]

Hi, I see the cat was moved from Journalists of Jewish descent to Jewish journalists (or something like that). That was an incorrect move. Firstly, it is my understanding that a cat move/rename needs discussion, through a WP:CFD, you can't just do it. Secondly, many of the people in that category are not Jewish or don't identify as Jewish. They are of Jewish descent, same as of Irish or Italian descent. The move should be reverted, I am unable to do so. Thanks. Sir Joseph (talk) 01:38, 9 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Category:People from Nor Yungas Province, Bolivia

[edit]

I would like to have a category styled as above. Right now, the only option is People from La Paz Department (Bolivia). Not only is the La Paz department quite large, but containing the capital city, it isn't very descriptive for where people are actually from. On the other hand Nor Yungas Province is the traditional home of the majority of country's Afro-Bolivian population, thus very descriptive of an area of significant cultural difference. You know far more about categories than me, so I am asking if you think it is reasonable. For starters everyone/thing in the Category:Bolivian people of African descent, except Edemir Rodríguez, Mario Pinedo, and Rolando Barra would fit the new category. I'm working on a bio that brought this to my attention. Thanks. SusunW (talk) 16:12, 17 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

James Baynes - 1766 - 1837...English artist

[edit]

Dear Sir (Ser) I read, with great interest, your Wikipedia contribution regarding James Baynes - thank you very much for posting that information. James Baynes was / is one of my ancestors and I have been researching him and his descendants for quite some time. As he belonged to the Sandemanian religion it is nigh on impossible to find any baptism record for him - Sandemanian records are kept at the Dundee University and BD&Ms records aren't easily available, to say the least, (if, indeed, they still exist within those archives). To get to the point, I've hit a brick wall as far as tracing James' forebears and I am wondering if you could please let me know where you found the information about his early life in Kirkby Lonsdale, specifically his several siblings and the fact that his father was a local tradesman. I can't see a citation on the page which would lead me to the source of that information. (Incidentally, an article by James Baynes' grandson, John Leighton aka Luke Limner, states that James was born in Kirkby Lonsdale.) Many thanks for your time and any assistance that you can kindly provide Kind regards Family Treehugger2001:8003:1305:D400:13F:2D1A:A161:E10C (talk) 05:19, 6 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  1. edit the page
  2. remove the text that looks like this: {{proposed deletion/dated...}}
  3. save the page

Also, be sure to explain why you think the article should be kept in your edit summary or on the article's talk page. If you don't do so, it may be deleted later anyway.

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions.

Re: NR photos in VA

[edit]

I want to finish off the photos for Wythe, Pulaski, Montgomery, and the cities of Radford and Roanoke, but with poor weather predicted for Saturday, I decided not to go much of anywhere. This led me to help with your request, getting new photos for two Bedford sites and one Amherst site, although I spent most of my day catching up on other stuff and took a quick visit (without going in) to Jefferson's Poplar Forest. I may start getting more local photos soon, depending on the weather — I have eight months with DST, so I'm not going to bother getting local photos when it's cloudy.

Once I have them cleaned up, I'll be putting up some new photos from a drive I took today after church: Millboro School, Monterey High School, the Rockbridge Alum Springs Historic District, Glen Maury, and a couple of spots in Lexington, plus a non-NR church (pretty good Greek Revival, especially for such a remote location) onto the stub you created for Williamsville. Nyttend (talk) 04:49, 20 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, a few more Amherst images coming: Clifford-New Glasgow Historic District, Tusculum (Amherst, Virginia) [but only the driveway; it's not visible from the road], The Glebe (Amherst, Virginia), and Geddes (Clifford, Virginia). Would have gotten Mountain View Farm (Clifford, Virginia) as well, but it's not visible from the road; however, it's a commercial vineyard, so visiting won't be hard at some point. Unfortunately, I fear that we'll have to settle for driveway-entrance images for a bunch of Amherst County sites; out here in the Piedmont, so many places have long driveways (like the rest of the state) with more heavily wooded and/or hillier terrain that makes tons of them invisible from the road. That, together with heavy traffic, makes it just plain hard to do the rural photography out here. In Kentucky or the Great Lakes states, the countryside is sparsely populated enough that it's normally easy to stop on the road without bothering anyone, but so many people live in the countryside in this area that there's almost always a good deal of traffic on little roads, and stopping in many places will cause traffic problems and anger other drivers. It's similar to suburban photography farther west (my least favorite), since you have neither good places to park and walk from (as in a city) nor rural areas where you can stop because nobody else is likely to come along in the next minute or two. Nyttend (talk) 23:27, 22 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Turns out that Tusculum is gone, and I'd be able to see it if it were still there...at least Virginia's probably not as bad as Ohio, where buildings can be listed a year after they're destroyed, and remain on the Register for coming-on-forty years since then. I remember you mentioning difficulties with rural Maryland, difficulties I've not experienced — but then, all I've gotten as far as rural sites are a few spots on the Eastern Shore and a few on the Pennsylvania line in Garrett County, so that doesn't really compare with Charles County geographically or culturally, I suppose. It's actually easier in the far west, both because of historically lesser prosperity (so not many people had large estates with long driveways) and the land (houses are on hilltops, visible from the road, or the road's on a ridgeline and easily able to see distant houses), and the greater proportion of open fields (whether for crop farming, or for ranching, or for not-ranching) that make it possible to see faraway buildings. So, hopefully, I'll be done (except the archaeological sites) with everything west of Roanoke after my next trip. I've really not done any urban photography since I moved here, except for getting Charlottesville a few weeks ago; I'm ready to start working on Richmond or metro DC, now that the sunsets are later. Nyttend (talk) 04:44, 23 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry to be confusing — I meant working on them for my own collection, like how when I was living in Pennsylvania I made a couple of photo-taking trips to Philadelphia, even though Smallbones had already gotten everything in the city. And disassembly...yeah, see President (steamboat), e.g. [11]. I'll be going up to Sweet Briar at some point, to get a VIVA Cooperative Borrowing account (I keep ILL-ing stuff from them; easier to get it directly), so I'll ask about Tusculum if I think of it. Due to reasons I don't feel like mentioning on-wiki, I'm leaving alone the lower Valley and adjacent areas for now, but I hope I can get it in the not-too-far future. Nyttend (talk) 11:24, 23 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
If you get the chance, Sweet Briar might be worth photographing, too - we have two or three pictures, I think, but not much more than that. Same with the Lynchburg College campus Huh? The soon-to-be University of Lynchburg doesn't have any listings; VUL and Randolph both do, but LC doesn't. Nyttend (talk) 17:50, 23 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, makes sense. Their library's collection focus is quite different from theirs, so we have tons of stuff they don't and vice versa, and thus I'm often up there to borrow something instead of ILLing it. I won't bother with their field hockey matches, but I can get plenty of other places. Check your email, by the way. Nyttend (talk) 18:32, 23 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Except for the Cornett and Martin Sites, there should be images for all Wythe County, Pulaski County, Radford city, and Montgomery County sites as soon as I get everything up. I took an early-evening trip around Campbell County yesterday (with a little jaunt into the edge of Halifax County), so things will improve there as well. I say should because several times I got only end-of-driveway images, and those are always fragile, i.e. what if I got the wrong place? So there's a chance that I might have one or some sites still not yet photographed. I also got the main building at Radford University (Commons:Category:Radford University has surprisingly few photos), plus assorted schools and post offices in various places. Nyttend (talk) 03:31, 26 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Low 70s°F (or is it 70°s F, or 70°Fs, or something else?), but that's to be expected when you're on the edge of the mountains. In a way, I wish I'd done yesterday's trip before the General Assembly adjourned for the year; I took a tiny road, Floyd County State Route 790 just southwest of Piedmont, and around 37°5′20″N 80°13′48″W / 37.08889°N 80.23000°W / 37.08889; -80.23000 it was literally the worst road I can remember driving on: gullies everywhere, deep holes constantly, numerous boulders sticking up out of the middle of the road, lots of washboarding, and about the steepest roadbed I've ever driven on — and these conditions caused my ABS system to engage repeatedly, due to lack of traction. I might have gone off the cliff if I'd driven this road in less-than-ideal weather. I'd be complaining to my delegate and senator if they hadn't gone home by now, since this is what the Byrd Road Act was meant to prevent. If I'd had the chance, I would have stopped and taken a picture: I'd love to create a photomontage of such a road, of an ordinary dirt road, of a minor asphalt road, and a good road with lines, and add a caption of "All of these are Virginia secondary state highways". Today's cooler, with light sprinkles. Nyttend (talk) 21:07, 26 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I've never learnt what district I'm in; I haven't yet registered to vote, since I've not yet had the chance to submit the please-deregister-me form to Ohio, and I don't want to risk committing some sort of election fraud by being registered in two places. And lots of things distress me politically, but among them is Baker v. Carr; we'd be better off in almost innumerable ways if we started ignoring the federal courts in areas not their province, and one of those ways would be increasing the attention given to rural areas if we restored by-county representation in the legislature. Anyway...I think I like Ohio's system better, where most of the roads are maintained locally, but the state gives money to municipalities, counties, and townships for road maintenance; as you note, it would be a lot better if I could complain to the Floyd County supervisors (or the Floyd Press letter-to-the-editor column) instead of sending a letter to some local VDOT official (why should he care) or a state legislator. Since it looks like I'd have to be in DC by 9AM on Friday to attend that meetup at LoC, I'm not going to attempt to attend; between the drive and the traffic, I'd probably have to get up in the middle of the night just to be there on time. I'd like to get out to DC before long, but definitely not during the week. Nyttend (talk) 02:06, 27 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Never responded; your email and its reasoning makes sense to me. It turns out that I missed several sites southwest of Roanoke last week (going down the wrong dead-end road will always take you to the wrong farmstead...), and since I had an appointment today in West Virginia, I detoured to get the last several today. Aside from a few archaeological sites, I believe that western Virginia (Craig, Roanoke, Floyd, and Carroll counties, and the fifteen counties/six cities west of them) will be 100% illustrated once I get these items uploaded. Time to start looking eastward for photo trips, I think. Nyttend (talk) 03:51, 2 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds good! When navigating hilly roads without the GPS direction-finder, I've learnt to write out distances and number the turns for myself ("go 1.5 miles, take the second left...") instead of relying on "turn at Smith Road...", ever since my first attempt to find the Fisher Site was defeated by Greene County's pre-fracking failure to post signs at most of its rural intersections. Do you know if you'll be back in the area at any point (some weekend?), or when I get out to Cumberland County and try to find the tombstone, will I likely be the first one to find it? Meanwhile, I got a half-dozen Altavista-area sites, including four with no articles, so I've uploaded a couple and will upload the other two (both Pittsylvania County) tomorrow. I'm looking to visit Richmond on Saturday (do you know what parking is like downtown?), and while most of the downtown sites are already illustrated, I'll maybe get a new listing or two. Nyttend (talk) 04:43, 7 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

[unindent] I misspoke; the four sites in question have no photos, but they do have articles. Funny the idea of "Buck County"; I hear that and immediately think of Doylestown. I've only once gone through the county (on my way to K&Q County back in January), and it was perhaps 6AM, so I can't really claim to have seen any of it. The only time I hear about it, basically, is from people I know (e.g. talking yesterday morning with a coworker who lives in Appomattox County, who was concerned about the tornado watches), and that's rare. Thanks for the comments on the parking; I had seen some stuff online about meters being mostly it, but them maybe being fre on weekends. I was hoping for something like what I found for Saturday parking in Philadelphia ($5 all-day parking in a garage almost next door to City Hall), St. Louis (lot parking on the western edge of downtown, again about $5 for the day), or Cincinnati ($2 all-day parking in any downtown garage), but if Richmond's like Louisville (free or inexpensive on-street parking, downtown or near downtown), I can work with that. I'm hoping to get the sites you mentioned, but more than that; my goal's everything downtown and nearby, basically from VCU to the Nathaniel Bacon House at [12], and from the Shockoe Hill Cemetery to the James River. It's a bit more than 100 sites, so I'll be walking a good deal; I probably won't have enough daylight to get the whole group, but I generally map out more sites than I think I can get, just in case things go faster than expected and I'm not left wishing that I'd mapped more sites. Nyttend (talk) 23:14, 7 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, just back home. I mapped just the right number of sites: I had plenty of daylight, but after getting all 115 sites and walking for almost eight hours (with only a few minutes of sitting, moving my car in case they enforce the two-hours-in-one-spot limit on Saturdays), I probably couldn't have gotten a 116th site. Walking the length of downtown several times means this was definitely the longest I've walked on a photo outing since getting most of Center City Philadelphia on one day a couple of years ago. I went through "Buck" County both ways, and now I'm wondering: where in that county did you visit? Along US 60, it seems just like other Piedmont counties: small hills everywhere, with more woodlots than fields, and more of those always-amusing signs (which I normally see only in the mountain counties), "Route 6xx Not Truck Suitable...Winding Road, Sharp Curves...GPS Routing Not Advised". And, with that said...where did you end up going today? Nyttend (talk) 02:28, 9 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Where are you getting your coordinates for sites? There are tons of discrepancies between site articles and the county lists, since I manually improved almost all the entries on the lists (by generating coords from maps in nominations) and haven't had the opportunity to update the articles yet. Of course, I've occasionally made errors with the new coords, e.g. this move was followed up by this typo fix, but in most cases, the coordinates are more accurate when I've changed them. Guglielmo Andreoli the Younger

[edit]

Ser Armantio di N:

I see you were the last to edit the above.

I am not familiar with the workings of wiki but, in the interest of adding detail to the article, I call your attention to a reference to a major Andreoli ty composition, unlisted there, "Parabola di Eid", "an allegory, written in the Grecian style with a commenting chorus, glorifying, in a veiled manner, Mussolini's fascist Italy..." I found it in an obscure source.

The quote above is from "Vissi d'Arte", a 1996 publication of The Boston Conservatory. The slender book is a memoir of the senior member of the voice faculty, Iride Pilla (born 1905), as told to Elisabeth Colson Tierney.

"In 1933 I was contracted to sing the leading rôle of Zenaida in Parabola di Eid by Andreoli." The section (pp 43-45) goes on to describe preparation for the Milan premier performance, in which the composer participates. It tells nothing about the performance and the only words of musical criticism are from Pilla, self-quoting an outburst as she was being pressured to perform despite being ill, "...it is a horrible opera, and whether I sing it right or wrong nobody is going to know the difference."

At the very least, what is in the little book adds some color to the article.

Do with this what you will. I can provide images of the relevant parts, or all of the book if you like..

I appreciate your Wikipedia efforts, every morsel of fact about every thing, is important to someone.

I've seen it happen before - had a Congolese village morph into an Indian film actor at one point. (That ended up being...interesting to deal with.) --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 07:58, 16 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I want to see that page history :-) Any idea what the title was? It's seemingly not described, at least, in your talk archives; a search for congo intitle:"Ser Amantio di Nicolao" found a bunch of archived comments mentioning Congo, but none referred to a specific village article. Nyttend (talk) 02:40, 17 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Nyttend: It was Manjo. Not that exciting - it was basically a very annoying, very persistent vandal. Took a couple of days to sort it all out, as I recall. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 02:45, 17 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree; I think it's amusing :-) What would also be interesting is if an unincorporated place in a US state shared its name with a municipality, someone added solid, reliable content in the gradual process of transforming the article from municipality to unincorporated place, and it stayed that way for several years before anyone noticed that there wasn't an article about the municipality. Now that would be hard, since you'd have to do a history split in order to avoid dumping the good content on the unincorporated place. Nyttend (talk) 02:50, 17 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I have a really bad feeling that's happened without anyone knowing about it. As it stands, I despair at the state of some of our US-locality articles. (There was also the weird little edit war I got involved in on Hybla Valley, Virginia, way back when. Look, I know Walgreen's isn't exciting, but the place in the picture is literally right next to the state road sign. You can't get clearer than that.) The only reason I found out about Manjo was, someone patrolled it, I think, and I got a notice. And of course my reaction was "whaaaa...I haven't created any articles lately." And, well, there you go. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 02:55, 17 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Maple Springs

[edit]

I'm in favor of not including the image at all. As you note, this house is outside the listing boundaries entirely; I expect that it's the "1940s concrete-block house" mentioned on page five of the nomination, and I'm confident that the coords on the county list, 38°34′53″N 77°53′26″W / 38.58139°N 77.89056°W / 38.58139; -77.89056, are those of the nominated log cabin. If it were the only part of the farm that could be seen, I'd say "include it, because it's better than nothing" (consider my image of the Nealy Gordon Farm, for example), but it looks like one could get a photo of the historic part of the farmstead by going to 38°34′39″N 77°53′38″W / 38.57750°N 77.89389°W / 38.57750; -77.89389 and looking northeast. Judging by the USGS quads, I'm guessing that the house might be visible from there, and even if it's not, I'd say that we should instead include an image of farm fields, since the fields have been a significant part of the farm throughout its history, while the spot in this picture hasn't been a part of the farm since the house was built. Nyttend (talk) 00:15, 12 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Still working on organising all of last week's Richmond photos, so I've not yet uploaded a few photos I took this week. I made more progress today, however; I got 58 of 59 sites in Norfolk (the missing one is the Jamestown Exposition Sites, on the navy base) and 21 of 22 sites in Portsmouth (the missing one is Drydock No. 1, not visible without military access unless you're in a boat on the river), so I can get those uploaded, I hope, before amazingly long. Nyttend (talk) 05:45, 16 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The drydock (correct link) is already illustrated, so for the purpose of Wikipedia illustrations, we just need the Exposition buildings. (Unfortunately, it turns out that I did not get the Portsmouth Community Library, since I didn't get the building in its Wikipedia article, and the in-article description matches that image, not my own.) I suspect that Jamestown can be illustrated with some images from 1907. With Brown's Ferry, you got the building north of the original house, it seems to me — page 6 of [13] marks a site south of a pair of buildings, and the building you photographed seems to me to match one of that pair (use acme.mapper.com to view both the quads and the Google imagery), so it seems to me that the original house sat south of the one you photographed, and has been destroyed. All I've gotten in Henry County was Stoneleigh; the area's not been a priority for me. Nyttend (talk) 11:55, 16 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Got back significantly earlier than normal from church today (we normally stand around for a while and chat, but people left soon after the end of the service today), and I ended up going down to Danville this afternoon. Once I get everything uploaded (but that might take a while, since I now have two large trips and two small trips all waiting to be organised), Danville will be fully illustrated, and there will be several fewer unillustrated sites in Pittsylvania County — I think Berry Hill and the Leesville Dam site (can't find the location) are the only unillustrated sites that I didn't visit. I even found a streetcar diner; I've never seen any of them before. Nyttend (talk) 03:08, 17 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Wow. I'm glad I took that Pittsylvania County trip when I did. See [14]. Nyttend (talk) 03:08, 21 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I once got soon-after-fire photos: see the infobox at Grandview Apostolic Church, taken two months after it was arsoned and one month before it was delisted. But more importantly, I've at least once gotten soon-before-fire photos; the infobox image of The Chadwick, taken about one year before it was destroyed, appears on the SHPO's profile of the site and was used in multiple web publications soon after the fire, e.g. [15] and [16]. This is a major reason I've gone out and photographed nearly twelve thousand separate historic sites: it's enjoyable, but it's also a slight method of preservation should something happen. Nyttend (talk) 03:37, 21 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, my photos get used a good deal; run a Google Images search for my username, and you'll see everything from animal rights activism in Kentucky to Illinois tourism (eight of the ten photos were mine), college tuition reports to West Virginia Public Broadcasting, and from the Dictionary of North Carolina Biography (using a photo from Indiana) to a California soft news report, using a photo from thousands of miles away. I hope to start with renewed uploads before too long, but before too many days I'll have to return the ILLed thesis that's my major source for expanding a bunch of substubs (e.g. Blackrock Springs Site, and I'm done writing the content for Gentle Site and Paine Run Rockshelter), so that takes priority at the moment. You asked the question on James Dale Ritchie about who Quincy is? He was Ritchie's best friend and the uncle of Ritchie's third murder victim. Though, it looks like that information was cut out yesterday. DARTHBOTTO talkcont 18:37, 27 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure, to be honest. Including it adds weight to the narrative and the Thompsons were a major part of Ritchie's youth. Though, I do understand the necessity of not having information that may be considered extraneous. Either way, I am admittedly enjoying having the community involved with the page now, as it was a draft since November- seeing it change course is very gratifying! DARTHBOTTO talkcont 18:43, 27 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
No kidding! I never formally met any of the people from the article, but I do enjoy going to the Totem Theater, where Treyveonkindell Bobby Dwayne Thompson worked and would serve me up popcorn and I do recall seeing James Dale Ritchie being a patron there, though if the images in my head are correct, he was always alone. What I am somewhat intrigued by is his time in Broadway, as the FBI was very interested in his activities there, before he returned to Anchorage and wreaked havoc. Even if nothing is found, I am confident the killing spree will have a lasting impact and I am more than willing to bet there will be Investigation Discovery and other true crime episodes about him. DARTHBOTTO talkcont 19:02, 27 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I went ahead and added back the content about James Dale Ritchie's friends. The thing that was bugging me was that because it was removed, there was no context to the murder of Trey and the information was incorrect about him falling out with his own family, as it was his friends that he fell out with. Photo trips

[edit]

Finally working on processing images from my weeks-ago trips to Norfolk/Portsmouth and Danville (now that I have images from some dozens of additional sites in Albemarle and Rockingham counties), so I've started uploading a few images, and we'll soon have a good deal more images from those areas. I was thinking of expanding my personal collection with Alexandria/Falls Church/Arlington County tomorrow, but the weather didn't look particularly pleasant, so my plans are now for Petersburg and surrounding counties.

Once weather's good, I still want to hit the close-in DC suburbs before long (but not the end of next week; that's commencement, and traffic will be horrid, due partly to security for the speaker), but I've never driven in the area, aside from just passing through last New Year's Eve. What are Alexandria and Arlington County like on a Saturday, as far as traffic and parking? Still abysmal like the stereotype? I've driven in Center City Philadelphia and a bit of its metro area a couple of times, but that's my only significant BosWash experience. And in particular, if you're familiar with the route, is there anything I really need to watch out for when approaching the metro area from US 29/I-66? Or should I just be ready for nearly interminable traffic wherever I go :-) Nyttend (talk) 11:52, 5 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hm, I never responded. Thanks for the pointers! I don't remember if I'm looking to get any Fairfax County sites; my goal is just Arlington County and the adjacent cities, and not crossing the river. And meanwhile, as you might have seen, I'm finally getting a bunch of images uploaded; a week and a half ago, I got several of the hitherto-unillustrated Bedford County sites, a trip yesterday afternoon/evening (after getting this image in the morning) yielded most or all sites in Patrick and Henry counties, and this afternoon I got several of the Nelson County sites. Nyttend (talk) 03:15, 15 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the meetup! I'm sitting in a Manassas Arby's; probably won't be home until a while after midnight. Aside from four pesky boundary markers, I ended up getting everything on my list; finished up with some of the Alexandria sites right around sunset. Maybe you noticed that my car's rather messy; that's the price I had to pay for finally getting a good roads montage. Maybe you remember that I was complaining several weeks ago about bad roads in Floyd County; not long after I'd been on the bad roads in question, I decided that I should have taken photos as evidence of how bad they were. On my Martinsville-area trip last week, I witnessed the worst road yet in Virginia (they even had signs telling you not to drive on it, even though it's still technically a state highway!), with holes and ponds so bad that I didn't dare keep driving and had to take several miles of detour. See the montage I've added to Byrd Road Act, all photos I took while on various parts of this road. Nyttend (talk) 01:34, 21 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Photos at Lynchburg College

[edit]

The DHR staff updated http://dhr.virginia.gov/registers/boardPage.html just today, and it looks like your comments about Lynchburg College (see up above from March) will no longer be applicable — one of the old buildings on their central lawn (and my favorite, architecture-wise, of anything on their campus) may soon be up for nomination. Location is 37°23′54″N 79°12′57″W / 37.39833°N 79.21583°W / 37.39833; -79.21583, in case you're curious. I don't think I'm going to go back to Sweet Briar until after the start of the schoolyear, however: their library is open only 9-5 M-F, and I wouldn't have any other "normal" reason to visit the campus. This wouldn't be much of an issue, except for the fact that the entrance has a guardpost whose occupant will ask you what you're doing on campus and how long you plan to stay; a woman might not get questions, but a man who's not an employee is obviously unusual up there. The one time I went to their campus (doing a little research at the library), he was perfectly happy with my explanation of visiting the library and let me through unhesitatingly, but I don't know how much they'd like someone who says that he's just taking some pictures. I've been in that situation before, on another campus, and I don't feel like repeating; see discussion at User talk:TheCatalyst31/Archive 8#Illinois photos. Nyttend (talk) 01:00, 7 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Look for Acroterion's comment of "I second that" at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places/Archive 51. Photos-while-in-session isn't a problem for me, since I'm at work when the kids are in school, but it could have been an issue back when that discussion happened, since I was still in grad school and occasionally got out for images during the day. Sweet Briar and Principia share an unusual common factor: both of them are located in isolated areas, and both have only one public entrance, so I wonder if they think they're more vulnerable because they're not surrounded by other development. I've never had this problem at colleges located in towns, even tiny towns that aren't much more than the college, e.g. Hiram. Meanwhile...you might have seen that I've almost finished off Amherst County, and I uploaded a bunch of Saturday images for Pittsylvania and Halifax counties (Pittsylvania's now done, and Halifax nearly so), and Sunday after church I got most of the Augusta County sites that I'd not previously done. Deerfield, Virginia is definitely very isolated, and it takes forever to drive the tiny road over Great North Mountain from there to Craigsville, so with a bunch of similar roads I wasn't able to get very much. Still, as soon as I get these uploaded, I think Augusta's done except for the Blackrock Springs Site and two other nearby sites, which really aren't accessible except from a trailhead on Skyline Drive, so I'm not going there for quite a while yet. I'd like to do an evening trip over the mountain to Botetourt County, but I doubt that's going to happen; lots of people working here live off U.S. Route 501 to the north, and outbound evening traffic up that way is characteristically bad. I've been a bit restricted by car problems: the car normally behaves fine, but occasionally you turn the key and...nothing. It starts eventually, and everything's fine once it starts, but sometimes it takes a few minutes, and you always wonder "what if it just doesn't start one time", so aside from going to church, I've been staying closer to home and sticking to the rural areas where all the photography can be done from the car, so there's no need to turn off the car. And finally, out of town next week for a professional conference in Michigan and the week after that for a church event in Kentucky; I won't be able to get photos on the first trip (I'm not driving, but this means I can leave the car at the repair shop), but I should be able to hit a bunch of sites on the second trip. Nyttend (talk) 11:38, 7 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I've only had a few angry homeowners. One was at the Moffett-Ralston House; I took the picture from a distance (like normal, I just stopped the car and got the picture while standing in the road) because I could see someone on a riding lawnmower, but after I took the picture and started to drive past the house, the guy waved me down and questioned me about my intentions. "I'm the owner and I didn't give permission, so you're not allowed to use the picture commercially!" I also had a significant delay at the Carr House (Monmouth, Illinois); I wasn't sure which house was listed, so I was going to get two different houses (one would be right, and I'd delete the other), but the guy at the "other" house came out (he wasn't visible when I took the pictures), questioned me, ordered me to leave (even though I was on the public sidewalk), and he even followed me out of town. It was quite an inconvenient delay, and as a result, the images I got of the Baptist Church (Sperry, Iowa) were possible only because I turned my car's bright headlights on it. Normally I'll just skip a place with visible people out front; a few years ago, I missed out on one of the houses in Ottawa or Peru because kids were playing out front, and I skipped the James Alexander House the other day because it was a lovely afternoon for sitting on the porch. Never had issues at a government building, although I'm wondering if (in the unusual event of there being less traffic) it would be okay to photograph the Pentagon while driving southbound on Washington Boulevard. I'm definitely counting on going back to NOVA on my next chance for a long, all-day photo trip; there's just too much of interest to pass up. Nyttend (talk) 17:56, 7 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Any way to get that "ferrier" article/draft back?

[edit]

Hi Ser Amantio di Nicolao, coming back onto that ferrier business, if you remember we had a quick chat about it around the New Year period. I suppose you too have been overbooked. Could you give me an update on this please? Thanks. As reminder, the first note about that is (still) on this page further up, "HNY, and a hand asked for...". Thanks again. Basicdesign (talk) 10:08, 9 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry. It used to be in there: https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utilisateur:Basicdesign/Brouillon. Thanks again for your effort. Basicdesign (talk) 17:47, 13 June 2017 (UTC) Damn. Please note that I just changed the link to my sandbox where the ferrier article was, sorry - got it mixed-up with the French side... This is the proper link. Apologies and thanks... Basicdesign (talk) 06:33, 14 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Was the English sandbox alright (changed the link to the proper page on my talk page). I tried finding it with some indications from the one who deleted it (and who seems to have forgotten about his part in that), can't. So let's forget about it, am gonna translate it again from scratch: looks like it'll be far quicker. Thank you very much for your attempts at helping me on it anyway, much appreciated. Have a good day! Basicdesign (talk) 07:39, 15 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Ferrier article back

[edit]
Hi Amantio, the article's more or less translated again, here: User:Basicdesign/sandbox2. Thanks for your previous help, and if you can find the time for a look at it any advice of yours on that page wld be most welcome (any aspect of it including how many times does the word ferrier have to be in italics... and the rest of it). Good evening to you. 88.219.191.67 (talk) 15:16, 19 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Going northeast

[edit]

Assuming the dealer does my warranty work as scheduled, I'm thinking of doing some DC photography this Saturday, with a focus on central DC north of the Mall. This prompts some questions, of course:

  • A month ago, you basically warned me against crossing the river, due to traffic-related reasons. Will I still expect to have to fight heavy traffic on a Saturday morning? I've checked the schedule; the Nationals are in St. Louis this weekend. But then maybe I have to worry about the fact that it's kind-of a holiday weekend? I'm getting the impression that holiday festivities are on Tuesday, not a nearby day as I learnt about a lot when growing up.
  • Do I have to feed meters if I do on-street parking, or is it free on Saturday? I'm having trouble finding information about that online.
  • Is it possible to find on-street spaces in most locations, or can I count on most spots being taken?
  • I'd rather on-street parking so I can move my car a few times (so I don't have to walk all the way back to my starting spot in the evening), but I'll use a garage if necessary. [17] shows me several garages south of Franklin Square and east of the White House that appear to offer most- or all-day parking on Saturday for $10. Is this reasonable, and is it a decent place to leave your car for most of the day?

Thanks! Nyttend (talk) 00:28, 28 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the analysis. Maybe I said this last month, but my only experiences in a major East Coast city are (1) a couple of times in Philadelphia, getting virtually everything in Center City plus a few spots elsewhere, and parking almost next door to City Hall, and (2) driving through DC on New Year's Eve last year, but not reaching the District until after nightfall, so (3) I'm trying to figure all this out. I've learnt how to handle driving/parking/etc. in Indianapolis and Pittsburgh, Cleveland and St. Louis, Cincinnati and Detroit, etc. (but not Chicago; I drove through there exactly once, without really stopping except for traffic lights), but they're really different from places on the coast, I suppose. And I've learnt to keep a watch out, thanks in particular to Cincinnati's worse neighborhoods and various parts of Detroit, where I'd really fear to go at night even on the street. I suppose in DC if someone looking like a stranger ends up in a bad neighborhood, he's assumed to be a lost tourist; not the case in parts of Cincinnati, where at least once I attracted police suspicion merely by being the only young white male walking around (I suppose they thought I was there to buy drugs, which is probably the case for most young white males who visit that neighborhood). One final question: if you go up there you might have more luck with the parking issue Are you meaning going up to 6th and C, or going to Capitol Hill? I'd rather not park in Southwest if I can help it, simply due to the walking: I'm not sure if it's practical, but I'm thinking of trying to get most sites in the area bounded by E, 6th, K, and GW University, and if getting all those sites doesn't work out, it will be because I'm footsore, and I won't want to walk back across the Mall and all the way down to USDOE offices. Women in Red Page

[edit]

Hi Ser Amantio di Nicolao! I am writing in regards to a Women in Red page that you were so kind to previously edit. The page is now being contested for re-deletion, and I thought you might be interested in weighing in, and possibly being another voice for preserving a Women in Red page. Here is the page in question. Thanks for all the good you do! A-voice-for-women (talk) 17:30, 29 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Yikes, stop on "architect OR builder" edits!

[edit]

Hey, I just spotted this edit and others like it on my Watchlist. Hey, you must stop that, and actually should revert all your edits so far! The "architect OR builder=" field is deliberate, indicating lack of knowledge from the NRIS database whether the following names are architects, or builders, or engineers, or artists/sculptors, or others associated with a given property. Those lines get generated by the "NRHP Infobox generator" (see wp:NRHPhelp for more info). It was a big past compromise to have them presented that way, which DOES NOT DISPLAY at all in the infobox. Editors are only supposed to change to "engineer=" or "architect=" or "builder=" when they know the actual facts, usually from the NRHP nomination document. If the NRHP nomination document is not available, then it is usually not possible to determine which is meant. --doncram 05:45, 30 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. About the Old Marion County Courthouse (Tazewell, Georgia), the best available source now is this document which is not a proper full NRHP nomination document, but rather is an abbreviated form used in a huge 1980 batch-listing of Georgia courthouses. It just shows "L.W. Wall" in a field for "Architect/builder" without any mention of the person in the text. So it does not suffice to determine what they did. By querying at this page, i find there is just the one NRHP site associated with L.W. Wall. So my guess would be they are a local builder. However, the building was built way back in 1848, before many licensed architects were available, when there were various true "architect/builders" who were both, so maybe he was effectively an architect too. But it is quite likely that there was an architectural design used, from a pattern book or some unknown architect, and this guy is just the local builder. No way to tell. But, hmm, searching on "L.W. Wall Tazewell Georgia" yields this Marion County history site, which mentions that L.W. Wall rebuilt the courthouse in 1848. Not the greatest source, but I accept that he was a builder. Your edit changed the infobox from showing nothing on this to showing "architect=L.W. Wall" which seems to be factually incorrect. --doncram 05:59, 30 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Yikes, that appears to be what was done in about 2,300 edits, your last 2,300 edits from my quick look at your contributions in pages of 500, many or all of which also happen to be marked "minor". It is not minor at all. In many cases, by the way, there are several names given, one or two being the architects and one or two being builders. Engineers are more rare. I know you are only trying to improve the articles, but in fact all 2,300 edits need to be promptly reverted. I don't happen to have rollback rights so cannot easily go through them. Do you have rollback and/or can/will you please revert them all? Sincerely, --doncram 06:13, 30 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

P.P.S. I see in this edit at Holy Innocents' Episcopal Church (Como, Mississippi) that your edit added value, providing apparently correct linkages to James B. Cook and to Andrew Johnson (architect), which took some effort on your part to find the right links for these persons. However the facts in the article state that Cook was the architect, and that Johnson was, in this case, a building contractor not the architect. He is one of those master building/architect combo guys, but he was builder here. Unfortunately I think the expedient thing to do is to rollback all. But it would be better if you, possibly with help of others, reviewed them all to see what could be saved. I don't know if I would be really happy with a forced cleanup campaign like that, but I would help if there is one. --doncram 06:28, 30 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
