FYI

Do you remember the discussion that was had here? [1] That was where another editor (whom I have had absolutely no contact with whatsoever since then) agreed to stop harassing me and dragging me into his petty disputes with other editors. Again, I have had no contact with him, nor do I plan to do so. A quick glance through his edits over the past two months speaks for itself and I won't comment further on his constant battles with everyone he encounters. All I will say is, "here we go again." [2] I simply do not understand why this individual feels it necessary to constantly drag me into his nonsense. Erikeltic (Talk) 05:24, 5 January 2012 (UTC)

Request for Interview Regarding Wikipedia Bots

Greetings Snowolf-

My name is Randall Livingstone, and I am a graduate student at the University of Oregon, currently collecting data for my dissertation on Wikipedia editors who create and use bots and assisted editing tools, as well as editors involved in the initial and/or ongoing creation of bot policies on Wikipedia. As a member of BAG and the bot community, I would very much like to interview you for the project at a time and in a method that is most convenient for you (Gchat, another IM client, Skype, email, telephone, etc.). I am completely flexible and can work with your schedule. The interview will take approximately 30-45 minutes.

My dissertation project has been approved both by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at the University of Oregon, and by the Research Committee at the Wikimedia Foundation. You can find more information on the project on my meta page.

Please let me know if you have any questions, and I look forward to hearing from you to set up a time to chat. Thank you very much.

Update: new user warning test results available

Hi WP:UWTEST member, we wanted to share a quick update on the status of the project. Here's the skinny:

  1. We're happy to say we have a new round of testing results available! Since there are tests on several Wikipedias, we're collecting all results at the project page on Meta. We've also now got some help from Wikimedia Foundation data analyst Ryan Faulkner, and should have more test results in the coming weeks.
  2. Last but not least, check out the four tests currently running at the documentation page.

Thanks for your interest, and don't hesitate to drop by the talk page if you have a suggestion or question. Maryana (WMF) (talk) 19:28, 20 January 2012 (UTC)

Well said about the barnstar glut. Maybe the Foundation are aware of how few votes there were compared to the number of editors or readers and think this will keep the numbers up for the next vote.--Peter cohen (talk) 00:00, 22 January 2012 (UTC)
I disagree, I think the amount of partecipation in the poll was very high compared to enwiki's standards, and it was widely advertised. Snowolf How can I help? 07:16, 22 January 2012 (UTC)

SA80

Hi there,

First up, I'm not too sure what just happened.

There was a phrase, something like "Stuart Short loves men" right at the beginning of the article SA80. So I deleted that bit, wrote "deleted vandalism" as the reason for editing, and promptly received your message.

So that's about it.

Really?

You had no right to do what you did. I have not been "asking" for anything for a week. When volunteers made false statements, I defended them and corrected them, especially when given unsolicited opinions that were not about policy or how to do the things I asked. What you did was extremely discourteous and you were very immature when I had a valid gripe with how things were being run. You should be deeply ashamed of yourself for failing to inform a user who was misled (by your own volunteers and admins no less!) that administrators had the authority to approve changes such as the one I asked for. You should not be editing wikipedia nor should you volunteer to help others, you clearly cannot help anyone and you're clearly not cut out for it. Do not ever contact me again, consider my retirement done. Seriously, grow up and learn how to deal with people and most importantly honor your decisions!!! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Justlivninmylife (talkcontribs) 20:38, 1 February 2012 (UTC)

MSU Interview

Dear Snowolf,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your name HERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) 07:26, 12 February 2012 (UTC)

Deletion of all of my content on Italian Wikipedia

Snowolf, I am the editor who uploaded the translated Simone Sello article into Italian Wikipedia. Utente:Vituzzu - Vito - as you know, has recommended the Italian Simone Sello article for deletion. I just checked my watchlist, and he has deleted all of my entries on Italian Wikipedia. I do not understand his actions. I am quite offended. I thought that we were supposed to be polite and respectful on Wikipedia. I have a great track record on English Wikipedia. I spend a lot of time researching in order to upload roughly "C" class articles upon initial upload, or edit to "C" or "B" standards without much help from other editors. You were on the Italian chat when we were discussing my language problems and the reasons I saw as justification for identifying Simone Sello as notable on Italian Wikipedia. Simone Sello is Italian, and it just seems right to have his page on Italian Wikipedia, as well as on English Wikipedia. For Vito to essentially delete me from Italian Wikpedia means to me that he is angry about something. I did not in any way try to offend him. Did I, without realizing it, offend him? Creating wiki page for a load testing software

Hello Snowolf,

I want to create a wiki page about load testing product, similar in structure to HP Load Runner wiki page below http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HP_LoadRunner

The product's (Enteros Load2test) pages are as below: http://www.enteros.com/products_load2test.htm http://www.enteros.com/products_load2test_pg2.htm

Can you please advise what would be the best way to do it to be approved by you and by wiki adminitrators in general?

Further comment from the BAG discussion

Again, as I mentioned in the BAG discussion you are correct. I already admitted I acted inappropriately several times but many other editors did as well and that's what irritates me so bad. No one even left most of them so much as comment, civility warning, nothing. I spent years building a good reputation only to have it torn down by editors who didn't like my edits or WPUS. Kumioko is just a vandal now in the minds of many editors so that's why I retired. I also still contend that I acted in good faith and my actions, although technically block evasion, were in keeping with the spirit of the purpose of a block which is to keep me from editing articles. If you bothered to look, I made 2 edits with the bot, one to the admin that blocked me to tell them I thought they made a bad decision and the other to the WPUS project to tell them I had been blocked and couldn't comment. In both cases I told them I knew there would be further problems. That was it, a few minutes after that someone blocked the bot but I had already finished making the 2 comments I felt I needed too.

Again, I know that no one cares what I have to say anymore and its like the work I did on the project, the hundreds of thousands of edits I made and the time I spent trying to make the place better never existed. I lost patience with the petty attacks and insults from others, many of which didn't even take the time to look at the situation, they just concurred with the last comment. If you really want to see the kind of crap I dealt with take a look at the comments that characters like Brad101 and Markvs88 made to me over the last couple years. I doubt you'll take the time but it might give you some insight as to why I finally had enough. Those are just 2. Several others including Racepacket eventually got blocked or banned but not until after I had to deal with issues and constant harassment from them for months first with no support from the community.

Anyway, I think there's only a 50/50 chance you'll even read this anyway so no reason to make it any longer. 71.163.243.232 (talk) 09:15, 4 March 2012 (UTC)

Help Uploading Photo

Hi,Snowolf,I'm new to Wikipedia and I'm having problems trying to upload a personal foto. It's an old fotograph of my late father, probably taken in 1920's (black&white),It's from his personal archive.I'm already an user and right now I'm waiting for permissions so I can finally upload this picture. What does really men:"Question: Please explain the WP:COPYRIGHT status of the image you wish to use, and the reliable source for the date" I'm confused, about the "status" thing and also about "reliable source"; In my particular case what else can I do to convince that the foto is Kosher...so to speak? Thanks, and if you came to Canada you'll see wolves galore...--Octavian Mârza (talk) 23:33, 21 March 2012 (UTC)

(talk page stalker)By status, they mean is it your work, is it copyrighted or what. They also want to know where the image is coming from too. Hope this helps.—cyberpower ChatOnline 20:17, 22 March 2012 (UTC)
I really don't know much about image, I would say they're asking who's the holder of the copyright on the image, has it expired, is it freely licenses, etc; dunno about the reliable source, I think in this context, if you write the date of when it was taken it'll be good enough, but I'm really no expert on this matter, sorry. Might be worth asking directly Bwilkins at User talk:Bwilkins. Snowolf How can I help? 08:55, 23 March 2012 (UTC)

User script list deprecation

Wikipedia's list of user scripts is in bad shape, in that it is disorganized and contains many non-working, unmaintained, or thoroughly obsolete entries. Cleanup has been on the to-do list since 2007, but little progress has been made. Instead, the whole list is now set to be deprecated on 1 May 2012, to be replaced with a new list. This draft list has been up for about a month, and in that time I've been soliciting script users and authors to come add scripts they know to be working and relevant.

If you know of scripts that you would like to survive this deprecation (and are confirmed working and relevant), you're welcome to add them to the new list. Note that the old list will be retained and linked from the main list, so there is no real deadline. Thanks for your help. Equazcion (talk) 00:57, 22 Apr 2012 (UTC)

I don't particularly agree with pre-emptive protections or non-admin clo I asked for sures, but that is not the point. You were the only user to object to it and many other supported clearly AGK's actions, so just move on. Wikipedia is run by the community thru consensus, and the community has spoken.

For fixing the vandalism on my user talk page! Graham87 00:35, 12 November 2012 (UTC)

I think you and I both misread his previous statements. I had come to the same conclusion at first, but now looking again, it was just confusing but not what it seems. I've seen him around enough that I would easily trust him with the tools. He has clarified on this talk page anyway. I'm not familiar with AWB rights, not a tool I use, or I would just restore them myself. Dennis Brown - © Join WER 12:05, 12 November 2012 (UTC)

I do not think I have misread any of his previous statements, the simple matter of fact is that twice within 72 hours people have raised concerns about his usage of semi-automated editing tools (STiki) and he has been less than helpful in addressing their concerns, rather laying the blame at the foot of the tool developers and the automated, non-modifiable nature of the messages at the heart of the issue and failing to rectify the issue (or else we wouldn't have had a second complain so close after the first). His continued access to semi-automated tools is already unwise as it is, granting access to additional such tools is simply foolish. Snowolf How can I help? 12:21, 12 November 2012 (UTC)
Not a problem, I will defer to your judgement. Dennis Brown - © Join WER 14:09, 12 November 2012 (UTC)
So, you are going to keep that access to AWB (a tool I never used, forget abuse) away from me based on your interpretation of my opinion — in a unique thread — which I don't think I said or meant? Is that it? I am learning, bettering myself just like many other admin, rollbackers, reviewers, etc. People have raised concerns about some administrators too, does this mean they are not fit to be trusted with administrative tools? Don't be like that please.

You're blowing this out of proportion. I have been trying to be extra-humble but is this the way you're going to treat me in future? Restore the access. Mr T(Talk?) (New thread?) 08:20, 13 November 2012 (UTC)

Question about account on Meta

Greetings, thanks again for starting that discussion. I had left a question here about fixing my account on Meta. I got fed up with things back in Feb, changed my PW, locked my account and wiped the Email address so I couldn't access my account. We managed to fix it by moving it to User:Kumioko (renamed). I created a new one, twice, but someone instantly said I was socking so the only thing left was to move it. Then I recreated the Kumioko account and started editing again for a while. This fixed things for most projects. The problem is though in some projects like Meta, didn't recognize the move, so now those don't work. What I am asking for is to Userp the account so that I can edit in Meta. Other wise maybe move it to Kumioko (renamed) also as was done here. Either way is fine with me. Not sure if you are the right person to ask but I figured you would know where to go at least.Kumioko (talk) 02:27, 18 December 2012 (UTC)

Simply, you are the owner of the global 'Kumioko' account and it's fairly obvious that the 'Kumioko' with one edit on meta is you. The account there can simply be renamed to User:Kumioko (usurped) or something and then you would be free to automatically create a local account on Meta by visiting there. Otherwise, if the meta account has the same password or email of one of the accounts merged into your global account, you can try and merge it thru Special:MergeAccount. OK thanks, I guess I should do it to those others too. I tried to do the merge function but the password doesn't work. Undoubtdedly because its still in a scrambled state. Kumioko (talk) 11:38, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

I doubt there's much need to do it to the other languages but I think these are probably needed:

  • en.wikiversity.org
  • incubator.wikimedia.org
  • meta.wikimedia.org
  • outreach.wikimedia.org
  • species.wikimedia.

Is this something you can do? Kumioko (talk) 11:40, 19 December 2012 (UTC)

Afraid not, all of these have active local bureaucrats. I have however filed a request on Meta, m:Meta:Changing username#Kumioko → Kumioko (usurped) Snowolf How can I help? 11:57, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
Thank you. So does that mean I need to go to each one individually? Except for Meta that you've already done of course. Kumioko (talk) 14:55, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
That is correct. Snowolf How can I help? 16:22, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
Ok will do thanks. Kumioko (talk) 17:56, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
Just to give you an update, I've done the rename for both your Meta-Wiki and Outreach Wiki accounts (I'm a crat on both). Thehelpfulone 19:52, 19 December 2012 (UTC)
