Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Octavia (gens), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Gaius Memmius. Proposed deletion of Karma (Croatian band)

[edit]

The article Karma (Croatian band) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

The coverage (references, external links, etc.) does not seem sufficient to justify this article passing Wikipedia:General notability guideline and the more detailed Wikipedia:Notability (music bands) requirement. If you disagree and deprod this, please explain how it meets them on the talk page in the form of "This article meets criteria A and B because..." and ping me back. Thank you,

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. About the descendants of Octavia the Younger

[edit]

Hello, searching about Wikipedia, I happened to notice that this article had a fairly detailed family tree of Octavia's descendants. If my reading on Roman history is correct, the 16 generations linking her to Melania the Younger is unprecedented -- the next longest I am aware of is the genealogical tree involving Valentinian III, which is about half that. And it is especially surprising, for many authorities believe few Senatorial families from the 1st century AD survived into the 2nd, let alone any from Republican times; this would make this genealogical lineage unique! However, looking at the sources & the articles on the individuals in this lineage, I found that the parental links were frequently qualified; that is, the word "possibly" appears a lot. This indicates that these links are theories based on shared names & known Roman naming practice. Further, the Romans of the 4th century (when Melania & her parents lived) were very conscious of status & their ancestors, & if they could trace their ancestry to the sister of Augustus, they would proudly boast of it. Unless there is some primary source that explicitly states one is the son/daughter of another, combining such a long lineage based on theories & opinions is not a verifiable fact, but original research.

In short, I fear you have accidentally represented a combination of opinions as fact & combining opinions don't necessarily result in a fact. While this family tree may, indeed exist, it is equally likely that one or more of these links didn't exist -- & thus there is no connection between the two women. It's hard not to believe that this table should be removed as being misleading due to at best being original research, & at worse just plain wrong. Thoughts? -- llywrch (talk) 19:08, 12 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thanks for your notice. I've already reread it and found that the family tree turned out to be too convenient, seems like someone already made it to link between Melanie and Octavia to the ancestor-descendant relation. I agree that the unreliable generations need to be removed from Octavia's descendants. Have you thought about which generation was the beginning of this "possibly" family tree? – Thắng L.Đ.Q. (talk) 08:41, 13 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
You mean to where Octavia's descendants can be traced? Or to where Melania's ancestors? If the first, I'd be surprised if any of her descendants could be traced into the 2nd century -- although it's possible. Based on the sources provided, Ronald Syme is a reliable source & not to be questioned; if he can show that Octavia had provable descendants to a certain point, I'd believe it. On the other hand if it is a case where shared names make it likely, I'd merely state that "Syme argues that..." & leave it at that. Looking at the puzzle from Melania's end, having read a few scholarly articles over the last few nights I found that there is no certain proof of her ancestry beyond her parents or (at most) grandparents; Romans of that time liked to boast of their distant ancestors, but rarely mentioned their grandparents or earlier ancestors. Getting to the bottom of this matter is not a quick project, & you & I may never finish it ourselves.

But as for the changes you made, I think those were the reasonable & probably the right choices. The point is not to deny the possibility -- especially if someone with reasonable reliability (or notoriety) has expressed it -- that the two are related. It's to remind the reader that it is a theory or opinion, not a solid fact. -- llywrch (talk) 23:16, 14 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • disambiguates only one extant Wikipedia page and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic);
