Peripheries/Regions of Greece

[edit]

Could you please discuss before beginning a move involving hundreds of pages? WP:BOLD is a guideline, but this is a massive change. Please stop and start a discussion at WP:GREECE first, where the issue of the administrative divisions of Greece has been repeatedly discussed. Constantine 16:15, 27 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have started the discussion as you suggest. Timothy Cooper (talk) 17:08, 27 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Identification of dyslexia?

[edit]

Hi Timothy! I noticed your comment on the dyslexia article—thanks for it, by the way—and realized you might be able to help find an answer I've been wondering about.

Many of the dyslexia articles mention that it was first identified by Oswald Berkhan. I haven't found any in-depth sources that confirm this—just ones that immediately go on to say that Rudolf Berlin coined the term. The sentence structures in these sources and the Wikipedia articles are very similar, so I'd like to confirm the claim's veracity.

The primary source that's cited throughout the articles is in German. If you get anything out of a quick look at it, it'd be a big help!

Verbistheword (talk) 21:59, 24 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Verbistheword!

I don't have access to the text of the document identified as the primary source. If you send me a copy, I'd be happy to have a quick look. Timothy Cooper (talk) 09:39, 25 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Stylistic misjudgements

[edit]

I'm very rude. On your user page, one "which" would be better as "that"; and the other one should be removed. Does the EU link need to be updated? Tony (talk) 04:32, 20 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your feedback. I would call you helpful, not rude. Thank you for pointing out the broken hyperlink, which I have now repaired. The first 'which' is perfectly correct and normal English, though this usage is more common in British than American English, where 'that' is more common. The variant of English with which you are most familiar influences which you find preferable. I understand why you think 'that' would be better than 'which', but I am happy to write in my own idiolect on my own user talk page. I don't understand why you say the second 'which' should be removed.Timothy Cooper (talk) 10:11, 28 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Krups, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Kettles. Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

Help needed

[edit]

Hi Timothy, I am working on Draft:Guta Moura Guedes and need some help. I see you recently did some work on the Alice Rawsthorn page. The two women have worked together on many juries and panels over the years. I would appreciate any help that you may be able to offer. RichardDehn (talk) 10:10, 15 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Richard,
I imagine I was just doing some minor linguistic and stylistic editing. I don't know anything about either of them except what I read in Wikipedia and in whatever media article I read which prompted my interest, but I'll try to find time to have a look.
Tim Timothy Cooper (talk) 13:21, 15 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again Richard,
I just checked the page history, and see that I inserted two commas and deleted a definite article. So, as I suspected, just minor corrections involving no knowledge of the subject or research.

Notification of namedrop

[edit]

Greetings. I hope you don't mind me referring to this edit of yours in a somewhat demeaning way. It was only intended to demean the quality of an recently newsworthy subject's article updates collectively and not as a slight against any edit or editor in particular. I certainly hold no ill will toward minor edits; someone has to do them and that someone is often me, too. But, if you want, I can replace this sarcastic allusion with something else. You can also remove this message without reply, reply to it or just leave it. The world is your oyster, Tim. InedibleHulk (talk) 04:33, 18 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hey

[edit]

I noticed you have been editing some health-related articles recently. Thanks for that work. A bunch of us hang out at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Medicine. You're welcome to join us if that's an area of editing that interests you. It's a good place to ask questions about finding good sources for medical content or writing style. Feel free to put the group's page on your watchlist, or stop by to say hello some time. WhatamIdoing (talk) 18:10, 28 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
Sorry to disappoint you. I read Wikipedia articles about subjects I come across when reading, and edit them for clarity as I read them. I'm not particularly interested in any subject area, and rarely do any in-depth research.
Best regards, Timothy Cooper (talk) 20:00, 28 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. I appreciate your help. See you around, WhatamIdoing (talk) 20:06, 28 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Edit warring

[edit]

Please don't. Having had your removal of the hyphen in tap-water chez Arnold Bennett reverted (see the Oxford English Dictionary) please don't remove it again. Likewise for intrusive AmE-style commas after dates etc, if you can get access to a copy of Fowler, please see the current edition, pp. 4 and 732, etc, etc. Good wishes, Tim riley talk 19:38, 22 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not into edit warring. If someone reverts one of my revisions, I leave it alone, however much I diagree.
I disagree with the comment that the OED knows better than me how to spell "tap water". The OED entry for"tap-water" was published in 1910, and has not been revised since. It is the best source for the accepted spelling of the word in 1910. However, the English language has evolved significantly in the intervening 114 years. The version of the Oxford Dictionary that has been revised uses the spelling "tap water". As do Collins and Merriam-Webster. I do not believe that all esteemed lexicographers since 1910 have got it wrong, and that in 1910 the OED fixed how a word should be spelt for the next 114 years. Timothy Cooper (talk) 07:17, 27 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have the 1983 edition of Fowler. Can you please quote the guidance in the current edition that goes against the change that I made and that you reverted? Thank you very much. Timothy Cooper (talk) 07:22, 27 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
