Bogan

[edit]

Are you aware that Bogan (disambiguation) already exists?Asher196 (talk) 04:01, 21 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, but it is subordinated to the Aus/NZ slang context of "bogan". The use of the proper noun form for the other entries for places and people and other entries get buried under that entry. TyrODonnell (talk) 04:08, 21 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Merge the two articles and rewrite it so that is not the case. Otherwise your new article will most likely get deleted unless you provide context.Asher196 (talk) 04:11, 21 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I reversed your page move of Bogan to 'bogan' - Australian / New Zealand context, as it violates numerous naming conventions for Wikipedia articles. All article titles are capitalised, so this does not imply a proper noun, and adding 'quote marks' to force a lower case b is not the way to do it. I understand that you object to the subordination of family and location names to the Australian/NZ pejorative term, but names and places are almost always subordinated to a widely-used singular use of a term (see Wikipedia:Disambiguation). --Canley (talk) 07:10, 21 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your reply. If I can explain my reasoning, the reason "Bogan" as a proper noun is currently only used in conjunction with other words such as a forename or geographical entity (e.g. Louise Bogan, Bogan River, so it is inappropriate to subvert its singular use as a pejorative term or otherwise to a disambiguation page. Your argument about proper nouns is a non-starter - as I mentioned in the comment, all Wikipedia article titles are capitalised (except for some specific cases such as iPod) so to say that Wikipedia is incorrectly disseminating across the internet (by citing two dubious websites) that "bogan" in the Australian context is a proper noun is simply not true (it is never capitalised in the article itself). Clearly we disagree, but if you feel strongly about the matter, might I suggest that you gather some community consensus on the matter by filing a request for comment? --Canley (talk) 03:09, 24 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I've added my comments at your RfC. I've added the listing to the History and Geography RfC template at Template:RFChist list, as for some reason the bot which does it automatically does not seem to be working. I've tried to be neutral in my description of the issue, but please reword it if you think my opinion is showing! Regards, -- Canley (talk) 14:54, 28 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
