Wikitable sorting

Hi, I see that you got List of Afghanistan T20I cricketers up to featured list status - it's a good article! I'm trying to get List of Sites of Special Scientific Interest in Cornwall up to FL, but I was having trouble arranging the sortable table with multiple headings, as you have in your table. I've been having a go at arranging this in my sandbox, but the sortable columns are all still misplaced, even though I seem to have styled it the same way as your list. I was wondering if you have any suggestions, or be able to fix this? Thanks, Zangar (talk) 11:50, 8 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

GOCE March copy edit drive

Invitation from the Guild of Copy Editors

The Guild of Copy Editors invites you to participate in their March 2012 Backlog elimination drive, a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy edit backlog. The drive begins on March 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and ends on March 31 at 23:59 (UTC). Our goal for the drive will be to eliminate the remaining 2010 articles from the queue. Barnstars will be awarded to anyone who copy edits more than 4,000 words, and special awards will be given to the top 5 in the following categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", and "Number of articles of over 5,000 words". We hope to see you there! – Your drive coordinators: Dank, Diannaa, Stfg, and Coordinator emeritus SMasters. 19:57, 20 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2012 February newsletter

Round 1 is already over! The 64 highest scorers have progressed to round 2. Our highest scorer was Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions), again thanks mostly to a swathe of good articles on The X-Files. In second place was United Kingdom Tigerboy1966 (submissions), thanks an impressive list of did you knows about racehorses. Both scored over 400 points. Following behind with over 300 points were Minnesota Ruby2010 (submissions), Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions), Wisconsin Miyagawa (submissions) and Scotland Casliber (submissions). February also saw the competition's first featured list: List of colleges and universities in North Dakota, from Minnesota Ruby2010 (submissions). At the other end of the scale, 11 points was enough to secure a place in this round, and some contestants with 10 points made it into the round on a tiebreaker. This is higher than the 8 points that were needed last year, but lower than the 20 points required the year before. The number of points required to progress to round 3 will be significantly higher.

The remaining contestants have been split into 8 pools of 8, named A through H. Round two will finish in two months time on 28 April, when the two highest scorers in each pool, as well as the next 16 highest scorers, will progress to round 3. The pools were entirely random, so while some pools may end up being more competitive than others, this is by chance rather than design.

The judges would like to point out two quick rules reminders. First, any content promoted during the interim period (that is, on or after 27 February) is eligible for points in round 2. Second, any content worked on significantly this year is eligible for points if promoted in this round. On a related note, if you are concerned that your nomination, be it at good article candidates, a featured process or anywhere else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which would otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Hey guys!

I'm dropping you a note because you filled out the New Page Patrol survey, and indicated you'd be interested in being contacted about follow-up work. This is to notify you that we've finally released both the initial documentation about the project and also the engagement strategy, which sets out how we plan to work with the community on this. Please give both a read, and leave any comments or suggestions you have on the talkpage, on my talkpage, or in my inbox - okeyes@wikimedia.org.

You may have noticed over the past few days that the MOTD that you link to on your user page has simply displayed a red link. This is due to the fact that not enough people are reviewing pending MOTDs here. Please help us keep the MOTD template alive and simply go and review a few of the MOTDs in the list. GOCE March drive newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 backlog elimination drive update

GOCE March 2012 Backlog Elimination progress graphs

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors March 2012 Backlog elimination drive! Here's the mid-drive newsletter.

Participation: We have had 58 people sign up for this drive so far, which compares favorably with our last drive, and 27 have copy-edited at least one article. If you have signed up but have not yet copy-edited any articles, please consider doing so. Every bit helps! If you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Join us!

Progress report: Our target of completing the 2010 articles has almost been reached, with only 56 remaining of the 194 we had at the start of the drive. The last ones are always the most difficult, so thank you if you are able to help copy-edit any of the remaining articles. We have reduced the total backlog by 163 articles so far.

Special thanks: Special thanks to Stfg, who has been going through the backlog and doing some preliminary vetting of the articles—removing copyright violations, doing initial clean-up, and nominating some for deletion. This work has helped make the drive a more pleasant experience for all our volunteers.

Your drive coordinators – Dianna (talk), Stfg (talk), and Dank (talk)

HighBeam grants you full free access to HighBeam.com!

HighBeam Research is an online, paid search engine for newspapers, magazines, academic journals, newswires, trade magazines and encyclopedias. The site has access to over 80 million articles from 6,500 publications, most of which are not available for free elsewhere on the internet. Thousands of new articles are added daily, archives date back over 25 years including trade journal, newspaper articles, and peer-reviewed journals covering a wide range of subjects and industries; and there are tools for finding, saving, organizing, and sharing information as documents. Aside from a free 7-day trial (credit card required), access to HighBeam costs $30 per month or $200 per year for the first year and $300 for subsequent years. As of March 13, 2012 HighBeam has generouslly agreed to give free, full-access 1-year accounts for Wikipedia editors to use, at the discretion of the community. HighBeam is excited about this and does not expect there to be a shortage of these free, 1-year accounts; however, editors will have to have a 1 year-old account and 1000 edits in order to qualify for one. At the end of 1 year, editors who found the resource useful can simply re-apply. The current plan, although up for discussion, is for sign-ups for the accounts to begin on Monday April 2 at 10am EST and remain open until the following Monday; if there are more editors than accounts, to assign them randomly; if a surplus of accounts remain available, to re-open the sign-up page for regular additions. See WP:Highbeam for more details. Dipankan says.. ("Be bold and edit!") 14:35, 15 March 2012 (UTC) [reply]

Hi Vibhijain, I just wanted to follow up on your comment about the functional hatnote. I'm a big advocate of the functional hatnote precisely because it makes it so much easier to defend NOTCENSORED if we gave readers the ability to read our articles without images.

It sounds like you're open to this idea in general, but you recognize the problems in doing it for just one article:

"There are several article on Wikipedia which effect a specific community or age group more than the Muhammad article. Such hatnotes should be bring into use in those articles first"

If you care about NOTCENSORED and want to protect it, you might reconsider a functional hat note. I won't debate which article "should" have been the first for us to bring it up.

We have a catch-22. At other pages, people say "Muhammad doesn't have a hatnote, neither should this page.". On this page, you say "Other stuff doesn't have a hatnote, Muhammad shouldn't".

If you like the idea of a hatnote in theory, you might support it here. I'm sure such a note could achieve consensus on pages other than this one, but this is the article Arbcom asked about, and that's the only reason it'd be first.

I feel like the only way to protect controversial images is to get SOME sort of a way for people to easily not see images. Until we have that, people can legitimately come to us and try to argue they we're needlessly offending them, and we have to give that serious consideration, because right now, there's no other option.

A simple hatnote on appropriate pages and we can sleep well knowing nobody 'has' to view images just to read an article. A very minor step, but one I'd be proud of. Right now, most users don't know how to view an imageless article.

Can't we find some way to add a short link to hide images somewhere at the top or sidebar? Even Western readers often want to read some articles without images, for example, when reading wikipedia in public .

It's easy to just say NOTCENSORED-- I know, I've said about Muhammad a lot :). But there are tradeoffs. If we don't put up a hatnote, we'll be under pressure to remove images outright. Adding a "hide images on this page" button to the user interface really would end a HUGE dispute, and there's no reason it wouldn't work on in similar cases in the future.

) That's my pitch. See what ya think. --HectorMoffet (talk) 08:58, 20 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello!

Hi Vaibhav, my name is Aayush and I've only recently joined Wikipedia. I've been fairly active on articles that relate to Jainism and I chanced upon your page. You've got the userbox for a WikiProject Jainism Participant but your name wasn't mentioned in the list of participants for that project, otherwise I would've contacted you earlier! The number of editors working on Jain articles is pretty small and that of active editors is even smaller. I noticed you're an awesome editor and you've helped quite a few articles reach the GA status. Right now, WikiProject Jainism has only 2 FAs and 1 GA. I'd say we need to jack those numbers up a bit! So, I sincerely request you to pick out topics of your liking from the list of Jain articles and make them awesome! As always, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask them and I will be sure to answer them. Hope to work with you on WikiProject Jainism! --Aayush18 (talk) 08:28, 24 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds good Vaibhav! And don't worry about your knowledge, no one here is an expert on Jainism. Being Jains, we all just know stuff and we learn more stuff as we start reading up things online. Do you need suggestions for articles to work on or would you be able to pick them out? --Aayush18 (talk) 17:29, 24 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

How are you? Bhitargaon Temple, Kanpur is one of the oldest remaining hindu shrine in India. There is a page on Bhitargaon but nothing on the temple separately. Can we do something about this ? Thought you might be interested. Cheers ! AkshaySeth20 (talk) 11:53, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Create an another article on the temple, and in the Bhitargaon article, delete the Bhitargaon Temple section, and in the lead add "Bhitargaon Temple" in the last. I you have any doubts, feel free to ask. :) ♛♚★Vaibhav Jain★♚♛ Talk Email 12:08, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

When I saw the MfD, i became still as if some psyco killer just appered in my bed romm with all windows locked. I looged off leaving my comment and opened FB and thought that it should not be deleted. I again came back to wiki and saw that you clossed it. I thought that such things last for days. I am not asking to reopen it, not at all :P but you really flattered me. Thanks! Yasht101 :) 13:42, 26 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2012 March newsletter

We are over half way through the second round of this year's WikiCup and things are going well! Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions), of Pool B, is our highest overall scorer thanks to his prolific writings on television and film. In second place is Pool H's Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions), thanks primarily to work on biological articles, especially in marine biology and herpetology. Third place goes to Pool E's Scotland Casliber (submissions), who also writes primarily on biology (including ornithology and botany) and has already submitted two featured articles this round. Of the 63 contestants remaining, 15 (just under a quarter) have over 100 points this round. However, 25 are yet to score. Please remember to update your submission pages promptly. 32 contestants, the top two from each pool and the 16 next-highest scorers, will advance to round 3.

Congratulations to Vanuatu Matthewedwards (submissions), whose impressive File:Wacht am Rhein map (Opaque).svg became the competition's first featured picture. Also, congratulations to Florida 12george1 (submissions), who claimed good topic points, our first contestant this year to do so, for his work on Wikipedia:Featured topics/1982 Atlantic hurricane season. This leaves featured topics and featured portals as the only sources of points not yet utilised. However, as recent statistics from Wisconsin Miyagawa (submissions) show, no source has yet been utilised this competition to the same extent it has been previously!

It has been observed that the backlogs at good article candidates are building up again. While the points for good article reviews will be remaining constant, any help that can be offered keeping the backlog down would be appreciated. On a related note, if you are concerned that your nomination, be it at good article candidates, a featured process or anywhere else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews.
