Tennessee Military Institute

[edit]

Thank you for removing one of the "stub" designations from the Talk page of the Tennessee Military Institute article, it had not occurred to me to do that after I did my best to turn it into a proper article. However, the article is still listed as a stub in the "WikiProject Tennessee" and "Military History WikiProject" boxes. I wonder if it would be appropriate to remove those designations as well? This is not an area of Wikipedia editing that I am experienced with, so I would love to hear someone else's thoughts, don't want to butt my edits in where they don't belong. :-) Thanks for all you do! Joebedford (talk) 19:18, 31 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Joebedford. I was tagging the article to get it out of the Category:Unassessed Tennessee articles backlog. I've been doing only the Tennessee project banner on these, because I found out that what one project considers a B-class article is sometimes start-class in another project--depending on availability of sources. This article is obviously not a stub, so I'll correct the tags to say that. White Arabian Filly Neigh 21:10, 31 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Editor of the Week
Your ongoing efforts to improve the encyclopedia have not gone unnoticed: You have been selected as Editor of the Week for writing and expanding articles about horses. Thank you for the great contributions! (courtesy of the Wikipedia Editor Retention Project)

User:Horsegeek submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week:

I nominate White Arabian Filly (talk · contribs · count · logs) to be Editor of the week. White Arabian Filly is a humerous, fun-loving editor who has created several good articles, and has written many horse ones. She helps expand the horse part of Wikipedia, but doesn't get enough deserved attention for it. In life, White Arabian Filly is probably busier than I am, yet has contributed even more than I have with all the free time I have! Please nominate her. • ThePlatypusofDoom, TParis, I don't know what to say. I can tell you that I would be honored to be an admin, but I have one concern. I don't have email, and even if I did get I probably would not disclose my email on Wikipedia, (I know you don't really disclose it here on the site, but via the ContactUser thing) except to a few editors I've worked with extensively. Seems to me like the people who give out their email burn out faster, maybe from involving their on-Wikipedia life with their real one. Anyway, I would at least take the candidate poll if that's a non-issue. I would be interested to find out what people think. And then, well, see what happens... 😊 White Arabian Filly Neigh 21:33, 14 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

WAF, you have been here a little over 1 1/2 years now? You have always been a friendly and edifying guide when I needed you. I just ran into an admin who had been here 2 years so I know that the right editor can start early. Anyway, when I look at your User page, it's quite impressive how much you have created in that time and of high quality work. And I know how many coding tasks you have taught yourself as well, such as infoboxes and user boxes, etc. And you have done so much in that short time you have been here. And then there is your temperament, which is quite pleasant, well-mannered, and not conflicting. The only time you don't leave an edit summary is when you rollback with Twinkle. As an admin, you might have to do that differently but otherwise, impeccable. If you seriously decide to entertain being an admin, I think you would be an excellent one. Just consider carefully the extra time it would take and how well you can handle conflicts. I would support your candidacy. dawnleelynn(talk) 22:10, 14 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Well, thanks for all your kind comments! Like I said above, I may take the poll just out of curiosity anyway. I'm curious to see what others think. I don't hang out at AfD or the other admin-type things much, but I do sometimes revert vandalism and there are times I could use the tools to delete copyvio or something like a personal attack. Dear White Arabian Filly, Thank you for helping me improve my own user page and turn my red links to black. You were very gracious to take the time to assist me when I was in need and exceptionally frustrated. In turn I passed your advice on to another new editor who was still all red so you helped two people in the end! I was inspired by your encouragement and created a new article about an American Historian Joanne B. Freeman. Do you have any insights on how to get this article assessed so that it is minimally a Start Class article? Many thanks for any guidance you can lend. PS Speaking of horses, I wrote an article (not on Wikipedia) about saddlehorses last year and learned a lot about horses in general - kudos to you for expanding upon all that knowledge for the public on Wikipedia. Minard38 (talk) 17:04, 26 April 2017 (UTC)Minard38[reply]

Minard38, you're welcome for the help. I have assessed the article as C-class. (In the future, if you create more, you can tag them yourself as start or stub; it's acceptable and saves time waiting for somebody else.) I saw that you have it up for peer review, which should go well from what I read of it. I think you could easily get it to Good status. Visual Editor question

[edit]

Hi WAF. montanabw told me you use the Visual Editor. When I started being a serious editor back at the beginning of October, I turned my nose up at it, being a technical writer and tech person. Coming from a background of working at software development companies, having worked with documenting code and script...and having done some myself. Well, I was quite happy with the source editor. But a couple months ago, I discovered there are some tasks that are done more efficiently with the Visual Editor and now I use both. Especially easier is entering data into tables. And sometimes when I'm in the Visual Editor mode, I enter citations. But the way it formats dates is very annoying. You get a numeric date, like 2017-4-10. When I use the Source Editor, I get 27 April 2014 which is what I want. I tried searching the Visual Editor help, but couldn't find anything that talked about a way to change the default date format for the web citation in the Visual Editor. I figured it couldn't hurt to ask you. And since I'm here, I thought I would tell you that I checked out the discussion re your poll for rfa. Seems every time I have read an rfa discussion they get into the "need for the tools" bit. In my mind, you get the tools if you are going to use the tools to help Wikipedia. Pretty simple. Yes, sure you can benefit from having them for yourself. But isn't the point of the tools to help clean up Wikipedia and moderate on the admin noticeboards? Oh well, I noticed the discussion got off track too. I can only wonder how this whole thing is affecting your desire to run. I hope it works out for you either way. dawnleelynn(talk) 03:08, 28 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know of any way to change the dates except by manually going in and editing them after the fact. Source formatting tends to be a little screwy for some reason, probably because it's run off scripts. I don't think I'm going to run for adminship this year. Next year maybe. White Arabian Filly Neigh 21:30, 28 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for getting back to me. I'll just continue inserting the citation in Visual Editor. Then, after it's inserted, I can click on it and select Edit. Scroll down to the date parameter and change the date there. Otherwise, when I'm in Source Editor, then it will be inserted the way I like. Like I said it was worth a shot. As for rfa, for myself I just joined Wikipedia to do writing. When I learned about the Admin role, I had no interest in it for myself. But I will always support you and montanabw should run for it. We need people to do it, so I am thankful for the ones that have the temperament for it. Check you later! :) dawnleelynn(talk) 22:40, 28 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

GA Reviews

[edit]

Hi there. I came across a couple of your GA reviews recently, and I am a little concerned that they were not quite thorough enough. I am referring to these: Talk:Taxonomy (biology)/GA1 and Talk:Green Bay Harbor Entrance Light/GA1. Both articles made substantial use of rather dodgy web sources at the time of review; Chiswick Chap, who knows a fair bit about taxonomy, ended up removing a lot of these afterward from the Taxonomy page. That article also has some prose issues, and makes a few dubious claims. A basic source check is a part of the review, and by including it in your checklist, you've implied you've checked all the sources for reliability; which, it seems clear, you did not. I think you will need to be more thorough in the future, especially if you wish to attempt an RFA. Regards, Vanamonde (talk) 08:11, 28 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Vanamonde93, I didn't check each source on each article, that's true. I randomly checked a number of them to see if they backed up what it said in the article. The taxonomy one really looked and read close to what I had to learn in high school science, and the lighthouse seemed acceptable for a fairly obscure monument. In my experience, a source is only as good as what it says versus the truth. In writing the articles I have, there's one horse site that at first glance might seem unreliable, but in a couple of years I've crosschecked it multiple times and only found it wrong once. In contrast, newspapers are wrong almost every time they cover some big horse show. They misspell words, get names wrong, etc. Anyway, if the taxonomy article is not up to standard, feel free to demote it. I'm not planning on doing any more GA reviews any time soon because I don't enjoy them and they take up time when I could be writing content. I doubt I'll actually run for adminship either, because I don't have a lot of interest in vandalism reversion or the kind of stuff you apparently have to do a lot of first. I do some, but I don't spend all my online time watching recent changes.White Arabian Filly Neigh 21:46, 28 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think anybody would ask that you check the content in every source; that would be asking for too much. Even FAC does only spot checks. But Taxonomy, when you reviewed it, contained such websites as this, this, and this. Even if these contained some accurate information, they are not appropriate, because they are not reliable enough to meet the standard for verifiability. The last two are particularly problematic, because they use Wikipedia as a source. See WP:CIRC. This is not something I knew beforehand; I skimmed the list, thought those were dodgy, and had my suspicions confirmed immediately. A check at that level is expected, because you are signing off on the quality of the sources. Just something to keep in mind, whenever you do your next review. Vanamonde (talk) 05:35, 29 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thank You!

Miniature bull riding

[edit]

Hi, WAF. You probably noticed that montanabw posted she is really busy in real life right now on her talk page. And yet, she helped me out with a couple articles. I've one left in my Userspace that isn't ready to go. It just needs another quick pair of eyes. No one else has looked at it. It's my first article on a topic like this-miniature bull riding, it's about a thing. If you could take a cursory look and just patrol so I could take it live, that would be huge. I asked Atsme to look at another one. And I always say, as usual, that I am willing to return the favor. I know I haven't been on WP long. (about 10 months) But I have been a technical writer for 20 years. And I know a lot of tech stuff. I have access to the Autowikibrowser which I have been using to fix some stuff. I especially like the search and replace which has enabled me to do some cool things. I could rename all a category within all of its articles using it in one fell swoop instead of doing them one by one. If one had a need for that. For example of another search & replace, if you looked at the List of ProRodeo Hall of Fame inductees article of mine, you'd see in the history that I made two very large search and replacements in there for empty parameters that the Visual Source Editor introduced. Long story. Anyway, just a thought. Anyway, it's not too terribly long. User:Dawnleelynn/Miniature bull riding Oh and hey I saw your article just passed for Good status for Welsh Pony and Cob. Nice!dawnleelynn(talk) 21:59, 30 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I gave the article a quick read and made a few minor copyedits, and will patrol. (I don't see the patrol this page notice, so it must have been patrolled already?) It's in good shape and was an interesting thing to read. I hadn't heard of mini bull riding before, although I had heard of mutton busting. White Arabian Filly Neigh 18:28, 1 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! You did a great job of finding the missing "yous" still left. And the "Here in America" which I also put in the main Bull riding article which someone else found there. LOL. Don't know what I was thinking with that conversational style. Glad you enjoyed reading it. There are still a lot of people who are not familiar with the sport. And that's great that you found the mini cattle article too. When I and montana did a search for miniature bulls on Google, all we came up with was commercial farm miniature bulls. And I didn't know there was a WP article. Though, down the pike, if the sport gets really big, I might create a specialized article on miniature bucking bulls. Anyway, thanks a bunch! :) dawnleelynn(talk) 18:40, 1 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Gareth Griffith-Jones, The Welsh Buzzard (Talk) 18:46, 1 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I've heard about it, but I don't think I've ever seen it in a real rodeo. I did once see a Shetland pony in the team roping event though. A man on a regular horse teamed up with his maybe-six year-old grandson and his perfectly trained pony. All the others they were competing against were adult-adult teams. They lost, but the little boy waved his hat to the crowd. Very cute.
I had happened to see the mini cattle article s while back and remembered it. They are apparently a big trend in hobby farming right now and thereare mini Herefords, Angus and Jerseys. I've even seen some where I live. White Arabian Filly Neigh 18:58, 1 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Rodeo performer infobox?

[edit]

Hi WAF, you know a lot about infofoxes I believe. Do you know of one, maybe used in the equine wikiproject, that would be a good fit for Charmayne James, a barrel racer? It's the first person article that I've worked on, all I've done before that are animals. There are only three women barrel racer articles, and none of them have an infobox. I thought I'd check with you first before searching all around. Appreciate if you know of something offhand, but don't spend too much time on it. Thanks! :)) dawnleelynn(talk) 23:23, 3 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Infobox horse person should work for her because the parameters are fairly broad. It was intended mostly for people like Bud Dunn who trained show horses but weren't involved in the Olympic horse sports (there's a different one for those people). I think it would work for barrel racers and maybe other rodeo performers like bronc riders. White Arabian Filly Neigh 14:59, 5 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, good timing, I was just out all morning and recently got back online. I will take a look at this infobox and let you know. No problem getting back to me today, it was not a rush! Thanks, I had feeling you might know of an existing one that could fit the bill. I hope you had a nice holiday. :)) dawnleelynn(talk) 18:48, 5 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I just inserted the infobox into the article and filled out the parameters as best I could. I'm sure that Atsme will take a look at the infobox as she is editing this article with me, mentoring me to get the article to a higher class than I have done, will have some editing to do in the box too. But, as for myself, I feel it is a pretty good fit for the article. And, as you suggested, it should be a good fit for the other rodeo performers too. Except, for bull riders, who need to have special bulls, instead of special horses. Thanks again. I still recall when you created the bull infobox for me, and that has served the bull articles very well. Happy Trails! dawnleelynn(talk) 19:17, 5 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
We could just add a "special animals" alternate parameter to the box, if left blank, it won't propagate. Montanabw(talk) 04:39, 9 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

There are some editors that I am motivated to add a few extra words of thanks to. Perhaps it is because my mother rode a horse to and from school as young girl in Northern Idaho. Perhaps it is because I have seen you develop into a highly productive editor here. Anyway, thank you. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 03:43, 24 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome, Cullen328. I somehow missed your RFA the first couple of days, but ran to support as soon as I saw it. I've seen all your great work at the Teahouse over the past couple of years and think you deserve adminship if anybody does. White Arabian Filly Neigh 21:20, 24 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Just an FYI, but probably the worst thing you can do for a new editor is to give them a link to ANI. And if you look at this editor's history, it seems very likely that there are some language barriers that may make them not the best candidate for contributing to en.wiki. TimothyJosephWood 21:56, 25 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Timothyjosephwood, thanks for the fyi. My intention wasn't to say, "if you disagree with somebody, run to the admins" but more "if somebody is really harassing/attacking you or doing something against policy, there's a place you can report it if all else fails". As for their English skills... ah, I've seen some American-born college students who write much less comprehensibly. 😉 I think the editor can contribute in ways that don't require a lot of writing, possibly vandal fighting or something, if they accept that they have limits. Eternal Sun

[edit]

Hi WAF, I made acquaintance with this horse accidentally during searching. Eternal Sun is an AQUA Champion, AAA race horse, Michigan Quarter Horse Association Hall of Fame horse, sire to many horses, and has an interesting story. But, I can find no references to him or his progeny in Wikipedia. Perhaps you can take a quick look at these sources in my sandbox and tell me if you think the horse is notable. Or, if you have even heard of him before? He could be notable but not enough that other horses who more notable are the ones being written about right now. This is where I stored the sources, there are just a small handful right now. User:Dawnleelynn/Sandbox I didn't want to spend too much time on it in case it's not notable. Otherwise, I thought it was a small enough story it could be a good one for me to get my feet wet for a first horse article. He only raced a few times. I have worked on other horses articles, but they were rodeo horses. And I just expanded Make It Do which is a mixed race horse/rodeo horse but there wasn't any specific racing information on him except a few numbers. He and Baby Doll Combs which I also worked on, are the only horses which are both in the AQUA Hall of Fame and the ProRodeo Hall of Fame, so there is some crossover there between racing and rodeo, which is really how I came to start doing a bit of work on some of the issues in the AQUA hall of fame articles. dawnleelynn(talk) 22:08, 8 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I would say he is notable based on what you have there. The fact that he's in a state Hall of Fame contributes a lot to notability. I wouldn't worry about there not being anything about him on Wikipedia. It's likely nobody has gotten around to to wrting about him, and and horse articles are not high-priority in most cases. We had zero on a lot of the Walker and Saddlebred show horses and people till I wrote articles for them, and I still have a lot to get to, so... If you want I can help you with the draft, but I may not be online tomorrow because I have some stuff to do. I should be on Sunday. White Arabian Filly Neigh 22:21, 8 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Well, that's pretty cool then. Yes, I would very much welcome your assistance with the draft. There's no hurry that it can't wait until Sunday when you are not busy. I felt really lucky I was able to find a racing history on him at all, lol. What you said about his notability and why he's not been written about so far makes a lot of sense. There are so many horses and only so many writers and horses are only considered so important. Well, it's even more so for bull riding. Not considered important by many, as you know. Talk to you later, thanks! dawnleelynn(talk) 22:40, 8 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
We can use my sandbox as listed above to communicate and to keep track of sources, etc. I just created a page for the draft; it's User:Dawnleelynn/Eternal Sun. I don't think we need (horse) on the article title as there are no other articles by that name. Unless you think so. I can change it if you do. You are welcome to be as little or as much involved in the article as you want and are welcome to change things w/o asking. You are the SME here. dawnleelynn(talk) 23:10, 8 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Strike that, I don't know what I was thinking. The sandbox contents aren't permanent. I created a talk page and copied the sources there. That's where we can talk and tracks sources and other items. Oops! User talk:Dawnleelynn/Eternal Sun is the location. dawnleelynn(talk) 23:21, 8 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
There was a change of plans so I'm not busy todsy; I will look at the draft and maybe edit or comment on the talk page as need be. You don't need horse in the title so long as there's no other articles named Eternal Sun, which there doesn't seem to be. White Arabian Filly Neigh 17:32, 9 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! I was just doing a tad of work on a new bull article in userspace. Then I was going to work on Eternal Sun. I am at a good stopping point. I'll need a good infobox and pedigree. I've see two styles of pedigree, one is a table and one is a more like a tree that are used in the articles. Can you recommend which pedigree style would fit this article better? I'll go in and work on starting the article in the meantime and let you know when I take a break so you can review a bit. Also, the racing record I found, is that the only one out there, it says unknown race type, is that where we would usually find out the grade? Just wondering. It's a shame about your plans. dawnleelynn(talk) 17:52, 9 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I usually use Template:Pedigree. It typically is the last section of the article before the references. The unknown race type may be referring to the sprint race format Quarter Horses run in, and not the grade--I'm not sure if they grade QH races like Thoroughbred ones, I would have to look it up to be sure. White Arabian Filly Neigh 18:25, 9 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yes template pedigree looks like one of two I am used to seeing. I need a little break now, probably half an hour or so. When I come back, I will do the pedigree. And then work on putting more racing info. into the article from the Equibase source. Then I'll probably take another break and work on putting information in about his life and owners. Feel free to look over what is there so far if you like. You can see I used the horse infobox. Post a short note when you are done. I do plan to have an intro lead section without references that sums up the whole article. dawnleelynn(talk) 19:29, 9 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I'm back. Are you in there now? Perhaps we should use the inuse template. I'll work on Bruiser a few minutes and if I don't hear a response, I'll go back in. dawnleelynn(talk) 20:12, 9 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I just wanted to close out this section with a final comment, no response required. We have moved Eternal Sun into mainspace, and it's pretty well finished. Working with you on the article was a joy, and I thank you for your help on completing my first horse article (rodeo horses not the same :). It was due to your encouragement that I felt I could take it on, and I'm glad you think it came out so well. As always, working with you on any task is a pleasure. Hello, Ingmar De Vos has just been elected as IOC Member. I saw that https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Killuminator had a new category on his page but I am wondering if I should also add a paragraph about his nomination + links to a few press releases and interviews which he gave. However, I would not like to violate any kind of rules so I am seeking for some help. In the past, you have been of great help. Thanks for your comments. Nicole1961Nicole1961 (talk) 08:12, 25 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Nicole1961. You can add the info wherever it seems appropriate, probably toward the bottom of the career section or right at the bottom since it's in chronological order. Press releases normally don't count as independent sources, but if there's a news story on the IOC election, which is extremely likely, you can use that as a reference. The links to interviews with him would probably be better in the external links section, since tight now that's just about the FEI in general and not him personally. Rewrite of Bodacious the bull

[edit]

Hi WAF, long time no talk. Hope all is well with you. Montanabw and I have decided that the article on Bodacious, think the Secretariat of bulls, needs TNT for many reasons. And although he's one of two most popular bulls of all time, sources are difficult because it happened in the last decade of the last century. Montanabw says you have a gift for turning up sources in Google search. If you could spare a little time for surfing, we would definitely appreciate it. If so, you could just post the links at User talk:Dawnleelynn/Bodacious (bull) dawnleelynn(talk) 17:21, 3 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, glad you are well. I imagine guinea pigs are cute and fun creatures. My parents just got a 5 week old kitten. So, I put a cleanup tag on the mainspace Bodacious article and started a sandbox Bodacious that we will work in and just copy into the real article when we are done. Edits on "cruelty to animals"

[edit]

Why did you revert my edits on Cruelty to animals?

They take into account that the very term reflects a moral judgment.

Moreover, what is with the "personal amusement" on zoosadism?

Taking pleasure in the suffering and death of an animal (for instance, in dogfighting, where the dogs are considered to be dying "glorious deaths") actually means treating the animal as an END IN ITSELF, just as being positively concerned with its welfare means treating the animals as an END IN ITSELF. This is very different from (though I would argue, morally equivalent to) the INSTRUMENTALIZATION of animals, for instance, in a factory farm.

Please let me know why you reverted as you did-70.190.102.49 (talk) 21:18, 29 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The lead of the article has been argued over and the phrasing hashed out multiple times. Some of what you inserted changed the meaning, and even on unpleasant topics like this or pedophilia or whatever, we have to follow sources, not what we think. Additionally, not all cruelty to animals falls into the dogfighting or zoosadism category. Animals are sometimes abused by people like rescue workers who are supposed to be taking care of them; there was a case in my area two years ago where a woman was running a "shelter" that was nothing but a non-breeding dog mill. I'm willing to discuss further, here or on the article talk page. White Arabian Filly Neigh 21:31, 29 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your response. However, I have another question. I acknowledge in my comment that not all cruelty to animals is "zoosadism", but what I am concerned about is how it is described. It is described as suffering for "personal amusement". If as I have described it in fact means treating animals as ENDS IN THEMSELVES (i.e. with their lives and/or happiness treated as having NEGATIVE intrinsic value), than "suffering for personal amusement" is a bad way of describing it.

Why not say "suffering as an end in itself"? That would appear to be an appropriate descriptor

Please let me know what you think of this proposed edit.

.-70.190.102.49 (talk) 21:42, 29 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I would be OK with that as long as it is sourced somewhere further down in the article; everything in the lead is supposed to be merely a summary of what's in the rest of the article because some people don't have time to read an entire long thing. If no source exists, we can find one. White Arabian Filly Neigh 21:09, 30 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

That's okay, I know you get online when you can. Thanks! Yes, agreed one of the most notable in rodeo. I'd like to do GAs, just not sure if my prose alone is up to it. Atsme wrote more of the prose in the last version of James. Perhaps a few of my last articles might be close if I work on them some. There's Eternal Sun which you might like since you helped me with it. But montanabw mentioned that animal articles are different and might be harder. James is the only person article I created. I expanded a couple of people. What do you think about animals? dawnleelynn(talk) 19:25, 12 November 2017 (UTC) P.S. I mean, you've done horses. But most of my articles are on bucking bulls. I do not believe any articles on bucking bulls have become good articles. And some think bull articles are not very notable, especially those who have reviewed mine outside of our wikiproject.dawnleelynn(talk) 22:26, 12 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I've done several horses and while there are things you have to watch, like describing the trainer and owner as different people, they are not that hard. People can be tougher because they often have more than one marriage and kids with more than one person, they can have arrest records and other stuff that's contentious. I think Eternal Sun would be pretty close to GA. If you want to do a bull I'd start with Bodacious or one of the other really famous ones (Didn't you do a rewrite of his article not long ago?) Or maybe one of the best-known bull riders like Lane Frost. White Arabian Filly Neigh 22:57, 12 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

It's funny you mention Bodacious. I did do a really long rewrite more than six months ago. And it's bothered me and montanabw for awhile that it was too long and the organization wasn't right, especially as practice writing more articles sharpened my skills. A few weeks ago, we decided to TNT it. It's in my sandbox and is getting close to where I think she can look at it again. We might go for a good article at some point, but it's definitely a longer article than any other bull article, except for maybe Little Yellow Jacket which Is the first article someone else started and I rewrote and needs a new rewrite as well. I did start a rewrite on Bushwacker, who equals Bodacious in popularity, and who has superior newspaper coverage over any other bull and is still alive. Lane Frost is an article that someone else wrote, and I have only done some minor edits to it. It's not in very good shape. It probably needs a rewrite, maybe even TNT. It would probably be easier to do more notable performers that montanabw and I have talked about such as Trevor Brazile or Ty Murray. I actually have two books out from the library on Murray right now. For the modern age, he's the true King of the Cowboys. I also expanded Bonner Bolton, where I wrote everything in that article except a tiny bit about being on Dancing with the Stars. I did write an article about Lane Frost's nemesis, Red Rock, but it was my first bull article, so definitely needs rewritten. However, I was in the middle of writing an article an article about Bruiser in my sandbox who just won the PBR World Champion Bull for the second year in a row a week ago at the PBR World Finals. Only a handful of bulls have won it two times. And he also won the PRCA Bucking Bull of the Year this year too. Only he and Bodacious have ever done that. Makes him pretty notable now. A lot of my other bull articles are on older hall of fame bulls. I am trying to get the seven bulls from the ProRodeo Hall of Fame done. I have two left now I think. I have all of the PBR Brand of Honor Bulls done now. And the three from the Bull Riding Hall of Fame done now. I think if we start with Eternal Sun, that could give us some time to mull about what bull might work, or let me do some work on Bushwacker. Was that too much? :) dawnleelynn(talk) 23:15, 12 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

No, that's not too much. I'm doing a famous Saddlebred guy now and have about 10 more that need doing. Well, if you think one of them is close, just let me know. White Arabian Filly Neigh 23:28, 12 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I think like I said, starting with Eternal Sun would be good. And would give me some time to mull over what bull article might be a good candidate after that. I'll look at the horse article to see if I can improve on the prose some. Also, montanabw was going to see about a few photos out there we were going to add for a fair use one. You can see for yourself on the talk page, actually. Bri added a suggestion for one of them. Thanks! ---Never signed this back in November, it was me dawnleelynn.
I think montanabw has just been too busy in real life to get to looking at the couple of prospective pictures for Eternal Sun. I went ahead and added the one that Bri found for me which was an easy sell, you can look at the talk page for the bit he wrote about the postcard of Eternal Sun and his owner. So I have added that picture and I believe the article is ready for trying out as a good article if you are still up for it. I know it can take awhile. This is the one we did together so it's a good one to do for us. Plus, it's a horse racing/show horse so it's right up your alley. You may have better luck finding someone to review rather than James, who was a barrel racer. Let me know! Hope you had a wonderful Christmas! dawnleelynn(talk) 00:44, 29 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

WAF, I am completely taken by surprise with what happened at the Eternal Sun review. I had no idea something like that could even happen. Of course, it's only my second GA review. But I have had 4 DYK reviews now too. And no editor has ever told me before that I have to use particular sources in my article, and especially ones that are apparently offline only? It's unfortunate that I can't get the book at the library or any library nearby or have it transferred. And you and Courcelle can't get the book at the library either. Like you, I am not interested in buying a book for one article. I don't suppose there are any other sources to try? montanabw suggested going to a tack shop and paging through the book there if they have it. Obviously Cheyenne would have tack shops. Never been in one though. Anyway, just thought it better to step down the nom and regroup for awhile and try the nom again later. Understand if you have on interest in pursuing this line of research now. Thanks for your help all along, you've been terrific and I want you to know that. dawnleelynn(talk) 04:54, 20 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The Legends books are apparently pretty big in the Quarter Horse world; I was aware of them before this because I've seen the ads for them in Western Horseman, but I didn't know he was one of the horses profiled. We don't have tack stores where I live either, except for the feed store that sells some bridles and breast collars and one English one about 40 miles away. Neither of them would have those books. I don't know of any other books that'd have him in it. We won't give up though. One of us should be able to find it sooner or later. We have a bad library here, but we do have a pretty good used bookstore that they might pop up at sooner or later. It's all donated books and they are cheap, but I've found a lot of great stuff there. White Arabian Filly Neigh 23:45, 20 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, I just thought I check out Murdoch's [www.murdochs.com] for curiosity sake. They are around the corner here but have other locations. I found vol 3 and 7 on their website just now but that doesn't mean they are in the store here in Cheyenne. I also saw a book about Charmayne James and a book "$24.95 Western Horseman - Rodeo Legends Volume 2: More Extraordinary Rodeo Athletes" which would probably help big time with some of the older rodeo performer articles. But obviously I'm not going to start buying a bunch of books. I might see if the library here has the rodeo one (there's a volume 1 as well and how many more I wonder) or maybe at least a library here might transfer it. So Murdochs is more than a tack store, they are a huge purveyor of all kinds of ranch and farm merchandise. Cheyenne being a western town and home of Frontier Days, I have already seen quite a few results for western stores here in Google. I can check the store and others for the Legends book and maybe take pictures of the pages needed, LOL. Just a thought. Right about libraries, small city so limited what's here. But lots of rodeo books here because it's the one sport in the state. dawnleelynn(talk) 00:12, 21 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Do you know who Colonel J. L. Haynes was please? A Confederate veteran? I wonder if he was the owner of Haynes Haven Farm.Zigzig20s (talk) 16:44, 29 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Zigzig20s, I have no clue who Haynes was, unfortunately. He was at the right period in history to have been in the Civil War, Spanish-American War or World War I. I want to do articles on every trainer at List of World Grand Champion Tennessee Walking Horses sooner or later, but it's tough to find sources on the old guys. I think he must have owned Haynes Haven from the way the sources talk about it, though... White Arabian Filly Neigh 22:30, 29 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

New Years new page backlog drive

[edit]
Hello White Arabian Filly, thank you for your efforts reviewing new pages!

Announcing the NPP New Year Backlog Drive!

We have done amazing work so far in December to reduce the New Pages Feed backlog by over 3000 articles! Now is the time to capitalise on our momentum and help eliminate the backlog!

The backlog drive will begin on January 1st and run until January 29th. Prize tiers and other info can be found HERE.

Awards will be given in tiers in two categories:

  • The total number of reviews completed for the month.
  • The minimum weekly total maintained for all four weeks of the backlog drive.

NOTE: It is extremely important that we focus on quality reviewing. Despite our goal of reducing the backlog as much as possible, please do not rush while reviewing.

unwanted name change

[edit]

Hi WAF Some of us were talking through the new PBR tour name issue on the Built Ford Tough Series when an anonymous user kept making unsourced changes that changed the whole meaning of the article to be about the new tour name. So I requested page protection and got an admin involved for my trouble. They took over, putting full protection on the page (montanabw talked them down to semi-protection), decided the article needed its name changed and started a name change request-all before I could respond or put forth a case like you would in a resolution board. They also reverted my last edit on the Professional Bull Riders to that same probable troll's edit, so humiliating. montanabw reverted back to mine. She's a such a treasure. But anyway, can you look at the move request? Talk:Built Ford Tough Series If you don't agree, that's fine..Otherwise, just an oppose and a sentence would be helpful. dawnleelynn(talk) 19:16, 28 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I've posted on the move request. I think they're jumping the gun a little because it probably won't be the same name next year. White Arabian Filly Neigh 20:00, 28 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks alot, you're a dear. And yes, jumping the gun my thoughts too. Among others. Good point about lots of references to the acronym BFTS, didn't think of that one. I still think that the "Premier Series" should be considered as it is in the 2017-8 PBR Media Guide and other places. Uricarillo64 even thought that was the name from references he/she saw at some points. dawnleelynn(talk) 20:41, 28 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki page requested correction

[edit]

Dear White Arabian Filly, Thanks for your comment on the page I created on the Spanish Statistics and Operations Research Society. I put the alternative name in bold, as you suggested.

I'm asking your help for a related issue. I received at the same time the notice of Speedy deletion nomination of French operations research society https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soci%C3%A9t%C3%A9_fran%C3%A7aise_de_Recherche_Op%C3%A9rationnelle_et_Aide_%C3%A0_la_D%C3%A9cision whcih is quite crazy as the French OR Society is, like the Spanish one, an important and serious scientific society that groups all French Professors of Operations Research, publishes an international scientific journal with Springer, and so on. I went to the page, but I didn't find the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". I would be grateful if you could help me with this matter.

Best regards, Silvano Martello silvano.martello@unibo.it — Preceding unsigned comment added by Silvano.martello (talkcontribs) 12:44, 15 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Silvano.martello. I looked at the article just now and it does not have a speedy deletion template, so somebody else must have removed it. I don't think an article like this is a candidate for speedy in the first place. You could add a few more references, but overall it looks good and I think you've proved notability. If you've decided to come back and contribute regularly, you can remove your name from the list located here. On behalf of all the Wikipedians, I hope you come back and participate in the project again; you've made some of the finest contributions around. I, too, have been missing you, WAF. I have noticed you haven't been around, especially since we had been working on an article together when you stopped showing up to edit. At first, I didn't think too much of it, but after two weeks, I really did start to wonder. I am hoping you will come back as you are one my favorite editors here on Wikipedia, and I really enjoy working on articles with you. Now it's been over a month. Change coming to how certain templates will appear on the mobile web

[edit]

Hello,

I wanted to share a follow-up to an RfC you participated in from late 2016/early 2017. It was regarding making certain warning templates visible on mobile. The Readers web team has been working to improve how these templates appear on the mobile website. I shared an announcement with communities today that covers what is happening. If you have any interest, I encourage your support in giving feedback on the project page or helping update templates of this nature with some of our recommendations.

ArbCom 2018 election voter message

[edit]

Hello, White Arabian Filly. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2018 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 19 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

dawnleelynn Yeah, I checked my messages above and wondered why they were still there. I then checked her contributions to see she did not edit in a long time. Any idea what happened to her? Adityavagarwal (talk) 00:32, 14 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Adityavagarwal No, Montanabw and I were pretty close to her. She just disappeared, and we were working on an article together at the time. She said on her User page that she had lost a previous account before due to no email. And that she had no email now. But that if it happened again, she would get email and get it back. But that has not happened either. It is really a mystery. All of her talk page stalkers and associates know she is missing, and no one knows what happened or if someone does know, they aren't saying. Thanks for the New Years Wishes on my talk page! Happy belated holidays to you too. dawnleelynn(talk) 00:37, 14 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Key Underwood Coon Dog Memorial Graveyard), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Notice

The article List of horse shows has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

This orphan article is an abandoned project containing a list of a very small percentage of the hundreds of Wikipedia horse show articles.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.   ▶ I am Grorp ◀ 04:58, 1 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
