Article(s): Flag of Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Request:

Create an SVG file of the 1968 adopted flag of Baton Rouge:

The background of the flag is green, symbolizing the growth, vitality and fertility of the land. The center emblem is a shield of white on which the colors red, blue and yellow are used. On the upper part of the shield is a crown in remembrance of the rule of Spain, France and England. The castille and lion of Spain are depicted as are fleurs de lis and a representation of the Red Stick for which Baton Rouge was named. A banner below the shield states: Founded 1721; Capital City of the Mississippi; Incorporated 1917.

Player for animated GIFs

[edit]
Quicksort explanation. How to stop and take a detailed look *hmmm*
RING finger domain illustration. How to stop and step forward or backward...

Hello, (Pardon me, if this the wrong place to ask, but I didn't found something to this topic and where to put) Animated GIFs are widely used in all Wikipedias (e.g. 7700 animated gifs alone on commons, for technical schemes, medical phenomenas etc (e.g. Walschaerts_valve_gear). A big usability problem with this form of videos, neither Mediawiki nor the browsers themself offering control possiblities for the reader (unlike other video formats). Missing capabilities are to pause and unpause, to step forward and backward per frame, playing backwards etc. This problem was described by a wikipedia user some time ago and he created also a solution. He created a platform neutral, Javascript based GIF Player, JSGIF (explanation as Bookmarklet in the link), which is pretty useful. Also, the code is available under a MIT license GIThub and therefore adapt or useable. Another alternative would be if GIF would accepted as video format by HTML5 video tag, but as far was I'm aware of, no browser is at the moment supporting this. So, what do you think can be this JS code used as prototyp for improving the situation? Or is there another good solution possiblity ? cheers Shaddim (talk) 15:37, 12 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Removing watermarks from an 1800-1801 CE illustration of a South Indian caste?

Request:

Greetings, the article Vanniyar (a South Indian caste) could use more imagery, and I've found an 1800-1801 CE image on a commercial site, but the image is defaced with a watermark. In fairness, sure, an individual can add whatever they want to out-of-copyright images, but can we not also legally remove those additions to get back to the original non-copyright image? MatthewVanitas (talk) 19:18, 13 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s):

I believe that while the original illustration may be non-copyright, the photo of the illustration taken by the British Library is a copyrighted image and as such not usable here. However if someone went to the British Library (or wherever the original illustration is) and took a photo and uploaded it with a free license, that would be OK. I'm fairly certain of this, but you may wish to ask at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions, editors there will be able to give a definitive answer. -Wine Guy~Talk 23:48, 23 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Re-activating archived request.Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 15:40, 20 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Recently, the Ascension Island territory has adopted a new coat of arms and started flying a new flag based on those arms. Attempts to add this image to Commons have usually resulted in copyright violations because they simply take the image supplied by the Ascension Island government at http://www.ascension-island.gov.ac/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Ascension-Island-Flag.jpg. We have non-free images on this wiki, but they are also derived from the copyrighted source. We need a skilled artist to be able to create a vector version of the new coat of arms based on its heraldic description rather than simply deriving a new image file from the government's source artwork. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 18:12, 27 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Article(s): es:Chetniks

Request:

I would be grateful if someone can come up with an SVG version of the map above. The same base map is being used in a few WWI maps and once the basic map is available I think I could turn a few of them into SVG too (and make translations for the Spanish wikipedia, my main goal). I could create the new SVG version myself but I am afraid I do not have the time just now so any help is really welcome. Thank you!-- Rowanwindwhistler (talk) 19:25, 24 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Rowanwindwhistler, I moved this request to the map workshop (link above...), because I think you'll get better help there with this one. Begoontalk 02:18, 25 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, many thanks and sorry if I placed my request in the wrong site...--Rowanwindwhistler (talk) 09:38, 25 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Not the wrong place, I just think you'll probably get better help there, especially since you talk about a series of maps with a common "base" map - that's where they have lots of experience.
I did notice this discussion: Talk:Chetniks#Chetnik_liberated_areas_map. I don't know if you saw it, or if you think it's important, but I noticed they talked about changes to captions on the map. Maybe worth looking into - but I don't know enough about it other than to point it out. Begoontalk 11:03, 25 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I see, good to know. I was not aware of that discussion but I should have no problem changing the legend once we have an SVG version (I tend to filter all propaganda out everywhere anyhow). The main problem is getting the version, which may be quite a lot of work (it would be for me and my point-and-click way of turning rater to SVG at least...). Thanks a lot for your help!--Rowanwindwhistler (talk) 13:21, 25 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s):

You can't create your own PD copy of a copyrighted logo - that's not how copyright works. That file shouldn't be at Commons unless it's copyright expired or exempt as a government work or something - I'm not an expert. You can ask about it at WP:MCQ. You need to upload it to WP as a fair use file and/or fix the permissions or request deletion of the Commons file. Maybe it's covered by {{PD-India}} like the permissions on the CRPF one above state - but worth checking both of them, I'd think - it seems to my non expert eye to depend on publication date, and the BSF one might be too recent. Begoontalk 02:51, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

So it seems, per your question at MCQ that this can't be a free file. That means it'll need to get deleted at Commons, I'm afraid, but I've grabbed a copy of it, and I'll try to find time to finish it off for you tomorrow, and upload it here as a replacement fair use file, unless someone else does it first, or I can find a vector on their website - I haven't checked that yet.
Could you make a note here of which source file or files you got the elements in your file from, so that the sources can be properly attributed, please? Begoontalk 13:29, 1 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, no, I meant which vector file you copied/pasted the elements from, if you did. I'm assuming you didn't redraw everything because some of it's quite intricate and already exists - sorry if I confused you.
So what I need for the file description when I upload it is a note of which vector file you copied the top element from - it's the same one you used in the Tamil Nadu logo, I think, and we need to attribute the source. Don't worry about anything else - that's all I used from your svg in the end - and no rush to answer as I won't be finished till late tomorrow. Thanks. Begoontalk 02:43, 2 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ok -  Done as File:BSF Emblem.svg - not the best logo I ever drew, and someone might be able to tweak it a bit, but there are no better originals I could find to work from. It's better than the png at least. I replaced it in the 2 articles.

note: Since you didn't answer my question above, which I tried to clarify as best I could, I guessed that you took the Emblem of India element from File:Emblem of India.svg, and updated the file description per that assumption. If that's not correct (or, in fact, even if it is) I'd appreciate some clarification so that I can correct the attribution on the file if necessary. No rush, obviously.  Question: And the reason you needed to not be open about that when I first asked, and bombard my talk page with several nonsense replies before finally posting this here, was what? Copyright is important, and I shouldn't need to prise answers like this out with a crowbar. If you didn't understand, you've had a long time to ask, and saying "I just traced it from a jpeg" is insulting and evasive to someone who has done a lot of work at your request. Honesty works really well here. Begoontalk 17:50, 4 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
i just told about wings of the logo and i am able to do very basic thing in inkscape so i traced the wings from a jpeg image and merge the emblem using inkscape and requested in graphic lab to add caption.and i replay in your talk page after your request it my fault and i didn't to make fun of you and if ask about the emblem clearly i may say about it at first time itself Perumalism Chat 18:05, 4 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Then with the greatest respect, since I hardly understand a word of what you say above without great effort to put it in context, and it still doesn't really address the question, have you considered that your English language skills concerning relatively complex matters like this may not be sufficient to contribute on this language wikipedia? I'm sorry if what I said above seems harsh, but it's very difficult to discuss matters requiring detail with people who speak less than basic level English. Perhaps your local language wikipedia (whatever that is) and Commons may be better suited for your needs? Begoontalk 18:13, 4 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

No, you didn't insult me. I understand the temptation to come here and get quick help because it's so busy and active. It's just important that we can communicate properly, and that evidently didn't happen here. If you get really stuck on your local wikipedia and no-one can help, or the same thing happens at Commons, please feel free to post on my talkpage, and if I can help, I promise I will. Help with vectorization

[edit]

I have vectorized files and . Should I upload them to Commons with the same names and licenses? Or change something? Thanks, Hosmich (talk) 15:57, 5 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Generally, yes, I would upload the conversion of foo.png as foo.svg at Commons with the same license and a note in the file description of the source you redrew it from, like "redrawn from foo.png by Hosmich". Then tag foo.png with {{vva|foo.svg}} to indicate a vector version is available.
That, of course, assumes the licences are correct in the first place, and in this case I doubt they actually are correct since the uploaders on both have claimed to be the copyright holders - which seems impossible. They will certainly be free files as far as I can see, but there are some details missing at least on the "Symbol" one, and they probably both need fixing. Maybe ask at the Commons Copyright village pump - I'm not an expert on copyright - they should be able to advise better what needs fixing. Begoontalk 16:08, 5 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

@Fama Clamosa. I converted the text to paths - does that help? File is much bigger but should render better - someone may be able to optimise it more - I did it very quickly. Begoontalk 11:42, 4 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Looks fine in Firefox now. Silly problem anyways. --Fama Clamosa (talk) 11:57, 4 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah - you get that with the way rsvg renders and resizes type and substitutes fonts on Wikimedia, so I tend to convert to paths in images like that one, then it's just a shape, and resizes like anything else - but you pay for it in bigger file size, and anyone altering it later needs type in a hidden layer or source file or they have to redo it. There might be a better "best practice" for handling it - I don't know what it is if there is. Begoontalk 12:03, 4 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for info. I must have spent an hour trying to find the problem in Inkscape, so now I can waste my time on something else. --Fama Clamosa (talk) 15:24, 4 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think they used rsvg for browser compatibility, so that the resizes are presented as png files to the browser. Not every browser would display an svg. Comes with its little niggles as you found . Hope you waste time on something that pays off later - usually works that way for me - well, often, anyway... Begoontalk 15:46, 4 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

For exact values, Larissa is at 73548 km, S/2004 N 1 at 105283 km, Proteus at 117646 km. It should also be a lot smaller; its diameter is ~18 km (Proteus' is ~420 km) Double sharp (talk) 16:19, 4 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Double sharp: I made the svg an exact copy of the original png as much as I could (with a few "artistic" exceptions). I can easily make the new moon a lot smaller (like the inner moons Naiad and Thalassa). But if you want the illustration to be based on exact values, you need to provide me with a long list of data. And, this would probably be done best in 3D (=not svg). --Fama Clamosa (talk) 17:58, 4 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
And if you translate 105283 km into pixels, 18 km is less than a pixel, so, from a artistic point of view, I'm not sure this makes sense. --Fama Clamosa (talk) 18:01, 4 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Of course not, but I was just giving it to give a rough idea of the proportions (doesn't need to be exact, and you state clearly why). Basically, the new moon should look a lot smaller, that's all. Placement of S/2004 N 1's orbit is fine. Double sharp (talk) 07:02, 5 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
OK, I made the new moon as small as I could. --Fama Clamosa (talk) 17:44, 5 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Question: Did you follow the advice at Wikipedia:Graphics Lab/Resources/Illustration Advice about searching the site for an SVG version? I had a quick look and there seem to be a lot of PDFs, some of which contain different raster versions to the one you have shown here - see [4] for example, but I couldn't immediately see an SVG version. I'm a little concerned that

  • [a] there seem to be different versions of this logo,
  • [b] the version you are showing is "squashed" vertically, and
  • [c] where the logo is shown in photographs on the site it seems to have different colours and borders around elements - see for example the image in [5] and the logo at the top of the site homepage.

I'm not sure how we would decide on even what a good original would be to create this logo faithfully, and whether we should actually do so, given that.

Perhaps, if you can't determine which version is correct, rather than just scraping images off the site like this, you could email and ask which is the correct version? There may even be a vector file available they can point you to, or are prepared to release? Begoontalk 04:24, 31 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

So how would we determine the correct one? Creating vector versions of organisational logos is fraught with issues, and can very often result in us creating an unfaithful version which is detrimental to the organisation. Would you consider doing a bit more research and maybe asking them which version they would prefer us to use? I shouldn't imagine they would mind being asked. Help cropping out a PD-ineligible portion of a copyrighted image for a potential WP:TFA

Whaam! is currently at issue at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Whaam!/archive2. It is a WP:FAC that seems to be of extreme interest to a lot of people. FAC1 generated 14KB of content per day and now FAC2 is generating about 24KB of content per day in its first three days. It is very difficult to respond to so much discussion at a FAC. However, one issue that is arising is my interest in having a PD-ineligible crop from the Drawing for 'Whaam!', which is currently part of the article. I hope that this article will pass FAC and be eligible to become a WP:TFA for the 50th anniversary of the painting on September 28th. TFA usually attempts to have a "free" image as part of its presentation. The above image is currently being contested for its "Free" status. At the FAC, I was told by Masem to nominate it at Commons where it is now nominated at Commons:Commons:Deletion requests/File:Drawing for 'Whaam!' cropped.JPG. It seems likely that the current crop includes to many artistic elements. Is it possible for the graphics lab to produce a quality version where everything in the background but the word WHAAM! is wiped away. The feeling is that without the additional artisitic elements, just the letters are much more likely to pass a PD-ineligible challenge.-- TonyTheTiger (T/C/WP:FOUR/WP:CHICAGO/WP:WAWARD) 20:26, 16 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s):

I put this version in the file history. I haven't done a lot of work to the background to try and make it match, but it could be improved if that's the kind of thing you want. Perhaps it will suffice for the discussion, and we can refine it if it's acceptable? Begoontalk 07:26, 18 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Is there an actual file on commons. I can't tell what you did when I look at your history?--TonyTheTiger (T/C/WP:FOUR/WP:CHICAGO/WP:WAWARD) 08:36, 18 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't want to complicate things by creating another file page for people to argue about, so you'll see the image by following the link above, or by going to the bottom of the file page at Commons: File:Drawing for 'Whaam!' cropped.JPG, and clicking the relevant thumbnail in the history. You can also use the "revert" link (which you will only see if you are on the Commons page - not the en one) in the history section to make any of the available versions the current one. If you like I can put it on a separate page for you - I just didn't want you to end up with 2 deletion discussions when someone decides to be efficiently bureaucratic... (and DerivativeFx, the utility I use for creating file pages on derivatives, won't work on a file nominated for deletion - so I was being lazy and avoiding manually creating a new page too) Begoontalk 08:58, 18 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I went back to the original, cut just the letters out tightly, and put it on an even background - I prefer this, but see what you think - it is on its own file page... File:Drawing for 'Whaam!' cropped 2.JPG. Begoontalk 11:02, 18 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
What is the proper term for this file cropped and ____? Edited?--TonyTheTiger (T/C/WP:FOUR/WP:CHICAGO/WP:WAWARD) 14:00, 18 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Er, yeah - you got me there... "Edited" sort of covers everything, or "lettering extracted", "lettering cut-out", "background erased" - I guess any of those would do. Begoontalk 14:32, 18 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Great work. Hopefully, we get to use this on the main page next month for the anniversary.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/WP:FOUR/WP:CHICAGO/WP:WAWARD) 14:57, 18 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That would be good. I hope it all works out. Let us know if you need any more help. Cheers. Begoontalk 15:19, 18 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If the sketch letters can be PD, do you think we could crop the yellow letters out of the main image of Whaam!. Original found here?--TonyTheTiger (T/C/WP:FOUR/WP:CHICAGO/WP:WAWARD) 03:42, 19 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A larger version of the original can be found at Tate. Click on the fullscreen button.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/WP:FOUR/WP:CHICAGO/WP:WAWARD) 03:45, 19 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah - that would actually be easier to do, and a better result probably, because I could make an SVG of that, rather than a lossy jpeg. It would probably look better than the drawing cutout. I'm not a copyright expert, though - so I don't know what the outcome of your PD discussion will be - and that wouldn't be fair use if not free, because you can just show the full image, as in the other case. I'll have a play with it in the next day or so if you like... Begoontalk 04:57, 19 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Whenever you get a chance is fine. I'll claim PD ineligible. I guess you should put the letters on a white background. Thanks--TonyTheTiger (T/C/WP:FOUR/WP:CHICAGO/WP:WAWARD) 05:24, 19 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Done - Here you go: File:Just whaam no bg.svg. That has a grey background, but there's a version with no (transparent) background in the history you can revert to if you like. I screwed up on the upload with the filename and it got the name of my working file, so you might want to request a rename to File:Whaam lettering.svg or something, but I'll leave that choice up to you. Cheers. Begoontalk 07:59, 19 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks so much.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/WP:FOUR/WP:CHICAGO/WP:WAWARD) 08:22, 19 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for letting us know. We just stick a {{resolved}} tag at the top of the section when the requester is satisfied, and DyceBot does the archiving for us automatically. I've added the tag. Good luck. Begoontalk 04:20, 26 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Could someone please create an image of Channel i with a transparent background, extracted from the above file (Remove bengali text also) & add colour (see here, as a logo for the Channel i on the English Wikipedia and bengali wikipedia.  Question:
  • You lost me a bit - what do you want transparent? It's green, white and red, and rectangular - so no need for any space around it or any transparency. Do you just want it cropped?
  • And what colour do you want added? - the example and the file are both red and green and white. Or do you just mean correct the red/green to match the example in shade?
Removing the Bengali I understand - but I'm confused with the rest - sorry if I'm missing the obvious. Begoontalk 18:01, 28 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
