Graphist opinion(s): I've had a look at the image, and I don't think it's possible to do what you're asking for, I'm afraid. The information simply isn't there in the image to bring out by reducing the brightness and/or contrast. I'm sorry. -- DMS (talk) 20:59, 29 January 2010 (UTC)

Ah ok, pity. Maybe a better version of the image exists somewhere. 84.92.117.93 (talk) 22:19, 29 January 2010 (UTC)
I have uploaded the original from the source given, which is slightly better than what was in Commons. Secondarywaltz (talk) 22:23, 29 January 2010 (UTC)
I reduced the midtone contrast by quite a bit (from Secwaltz'), saves some but brings up other problems. Histogram looks better now. Jpeg editing is no fun anyway.. Martinor (talk) 07:52, 30 January 2010 (UTC)
I edited out the lines of different lightness from the image and further tweaked the histogram a bit. —Quibik (talk) 13:08, 30 January 2010 (UTC)

Combine pictures

Resolved

Article(s): National Treasures of Japan

Request: During the good article candidacy it has been suggested to have a more fancy picture for the lead section than the present. An idea would be to combine several pictures of national treasures of various types. I am not good with image manipulation so I ask the help of an expert here. Pictures can be found in any of the Lists of National Treasures of Japan or in the subcategories of commons:Category:National Treasures of Japan. Maybe four or six pictures could be combined into one mosaic. I leave it up to the graphist to select the pictures. I would suggest taking pictures from different categories. Maybe one each of: temples, castles, paintings, sculptures, writings (or ancient documents) and crafts (crafts-others or crafts-swords) would make a good mix of six pictures. bamse (talk) 14:06, 10 February 2010 (UTC)

Graphist opinion(s): Would this do?

-- DMS (talk) 15:57, 10 February 2010 (UTC)

It would be better if it could have two horizontal rows and two vertical columns, ie. make it a square instead of a panorama.·Maunus·ƛ· 16:15, 10 February 2010 (UTC)
Ah, OK. Sorry - thought you wanted something to go along the top of the article. I'll create another mosaic, square this time. -- DMS (talk) 16:27, 10 February 2010 (UTC)
Also it would be great if you could make a map effect so that a mouse over would tell what the different pictures depict.·Maunus·ƛ· 21:01, 10 February 2010 (UTC)
Will this image be suitable? If it is, I can do the image map thing. :)

I have nothing against using custom images for this task, but I'd like to suggest an alternative method of generating the mosaic – plain images along with some tables & CSS. (As can be seen on the right.) This should have the advantage of being easier to customize (later). —Quibik (talk) 21:59, 10 February 2010 (UTC)

I did some additional cleanup by removing the fine-grained regular noise as much as possible (mostly via FFT). I hope it didn't eat away too much detail. (BTW, JBarta, what process did you use for removing the color banding?) —Quibik (talk) 21:42, 18 February 2010 (UTC)
I used the "color to target" tool in PSP7. It attempts to shift the hue of an area to the hue of another area. Using the areas between the green stripes as target colors, I brushed the green stripes. It's not perfect, but it's an improvement. BTW, I like what you did to smooth out the noise in this image (though, truth be told, maybe a little too smooth for my tastes). Maybe you'd like to take a shot at the image of the two Polish scouts above (Arrowpl.jpg)? It appears to contain similar noise. JBarta (talk) 22:00, 18 February 2010 (UTC)
