DeFord Bailey photograph

DeFord Bailey
Request
I am the editor who made the initial contact with Mr. Bailey's biographer (& the photographer), David C. Morton. The photograph was published onto Wikipedia under a CC BY-SA 4.0 license, per the OTRS ticket mentioned at the image's Commons page. I love this photo, I have ever since I first saw it and I think it is an honor for Wikipedia to be able to host it. I would like to get the image more recognition but, after nominating it for FP status earlier this year (seen at Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/DeFord Bailey), I now realize there are technical issue with the image's quality. I had just thought the picture of the subject is so perfect - I'm not very impartial I guess. Mr. Bailey was the absolute first performer on what eventually came to be known as the Grand Ole Opry and he was an early star of that show.
I am willing to work on the photo myself but I don't even know if it is possible to take this image to FP standards. Is anyone around here willing to be a mentor, to work on this image with me, to explain if it is even possible to improve the quality and so on? The bad news is that, so far as I know, a higher-res version of this image is not available. Thanks -- Shearonink (talk) 20:33, 17 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Discussion
Anyone willing to give me an opinion if this image could be a FP, if the technical issues can be cleaned up, etc? I know this page has 191 watchers...surely someone around here is an expert who could help. I'm willing to try to fix it myself I just need someone to mentor me through the process (if that is even possible thanks). Shearonink (talk) 04:40, 19 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I've cleaned it up and colour adjusted it, but I'm not sure it would make FP. (Hohum @) 16:05, 19 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Wow...looks a lot better! Thank you. When I blow up the image I guess the major issue is the schmutz/lint/?? on the print. I don't know if there's any way to clean that dust/etc away using PhotoShop or whatever, but it does look so much better. See, the thing is...this image is unique, regardless of the apparent technical flaws. Mr. Bailey is an important figure in American history, an icon of American music that's in the Country Music Hall of Fame...seems like it would be a good thing to bring more attention to his likeness and his story.
Again, thanks for those improvements. Shearonink (talk) 18:23, 19 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I think I cleared almost all the scratches, dust, etc. What remains is probably aspects of the colour grains from the original film. There is some posterisation at the darker boundaries, but it's a tradeoff I chose to brighten the image to show the face better. (Hohum @) 19:02, 19 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Looking better and better. Thank you. I have some further questions...1)There is a bright white mark above Mr. Bailey's one shoulder, between his ear and the shoulder. Can that be....I dunno...ameliorated? 2)I think *some* of the stuff that looks like dust on the image could actually be physical lint on Mr. Bailey's dark suit but, again, there are some small bits that look kind of like small hairs (above the white hat, on the bent elbow, near the top left border, under pocket-handkerchief, etc), can any of those be removed? Shearonink (talk) 19:37, 19 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I think you may need to refresh the image (<shift F5> in most browsers), because I'm pretty sure I've dealt with those issues. (Hohum @) 17:19, 20 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I was clicking on the file that I had originally posted above and that was showing the white marks... Shearonink (talk) 18:03, 20 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It looks SO much better. Thank you. I'm going to try for Featured Picture Candidate again but does the new version need a different name maybe (with linkage to the original version for attribution's sake)? I've asked over at Wikipedia talk:Featured picture candidates to see what the procedure might be... If there's instructions on her about all that I sure can't find it. Crop needed. PawełMM did a beautiful job on my previous plant lists ... here's the next one (up at WP:FLC today!) This orchid name means "dove" ... and if you look closely, you'll see a dove's head and outstretched wings in the center of each flower. I'd like just the left flower, please, cropped closely enough so that the dove is visible at thumbnail size. - Dank (push to talk) 02:07, 22 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
PawełMM (or whoever), one more crop please? "Acacia" translates to "thorny", but the thorns are hard to see at thumbnail size. - Dank (push to talk) 17:53, 26 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
