The link in a tab button at the top of Wikipedia pages to a non-existing page (like say a non-existing talk page) displays bluish purple. It is hard to distinguish them from existing pages. Is there css code that will make them red like normal links to non-existing pages. —teb728 t c 00:57, 6 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, they normally are red. No idea why you are seeing that colour. Try temporarily removing your existing css and see what you then get, though I can't see anything that should change the tab colours in your vector css. SpinningSpark 02:15, 6 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I tried not-logged-in sessions on another browser and another PC; they looked the same.
I looked at the generated HTML: For a normal red link class="new" is applied to the anchor. For a tab button the anchor is inside span inside li; class="new" is applied to the li; the anchor has no class.
As a workaround I added li.new a {color:Black; background:#ffc0c0;} to my vector css. The background is pale red as intended, but the text is still purple. —teb728 t c 10:28, 6 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, in fact, I can't even get it to change colour at all. I thought that this css
  #p-cactions a.new {
	color: #ba0000;
  }
   #p-cactions a.new:visited {
	color: #a55858;
  }
should do the job, but I can't get it to work, even though similar css succeeds in changing the colours of the non-redlinked tabs. Try asking at WP:VPT. SpinningSpark 10:44, 6 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I have now done so. Thanks for your effort. —teb728 t c 20:45, 6 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
If anyone is interested, there is an explanation and solution at WP:VPT#Color of tab links. —teb728 t c 00:37, 7 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

I have written a template {{Almanacco}} to act as a wrapper for accesses to an external site. Everything is working except the passing of accented characters in one of the parameters. The problem seems to be that the Wikipedia's {{urlencode}} is encoding in UTF-8, and the target page is expecting ISO-8859-1 (the old ISO Latin 1)

Eg: If I want to search the target site for the word "Tragödie", I would invoke the template with

  • {{Almanacco | match=Tragödie}}

The template invokes {{urlencode}} and is given "Trag%C3%B6die" (UTF-8 encoding), but the target page only understands "Trag%F6die" (ISO Latin 1). The search fails, and no matches are found.

The two options that jump to mind are:

  1. add some hairy programming in the template specifically to handle each of the accented characters available in ISO Latin 1
  2. try to explain to the template's users why there is a problem with accents and how to work around it (copy encoding from target page?)

Do you have any ideas about an alternative solution? In hope, Scarabocchio (talk) 12:37, 6 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This question might get a better response at WP:VPT. SpinningSpark 08:30, 9 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, will try there. Thanks. Scarabocchio (talk) 08:51, 9 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Proposing minor changes to the "Cite" box

[edit]

I've started using the "Cite" form in the GUI editor more and more, in lieu of manually typing {{cite web|blablabla}}. I understand that clicking "Show/Hide Extra Fields" will show probably more fields than most people would use anyway, but there are still some fields that I wish it included. One is subscription=yes/no. I also wish that the format field in the GUI was a dropdown instead of free text, which included some of the most popular formats, such as PDF, DOC or XLS. Where would I go to request changes to the GUI? Lugevas (talk) 14:35, 6 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Help talk:Citation Style 1 might be a good place to start. SpinningSpark 17:07, 6 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

the ten avatar of vishnu

[edit]

Balaram is not avatar vishnu , but Mohini is the avatar that is missing in the article . Balaram is the avatar of Sheshnag the Bed of Vishnu. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 117.221.99.138 (talk) 15:41, 6 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Are you talking about the Dashavatara page? (The Ten Avatars of Vishnu redirects there). Balarama does not appear on the main list but is mentioned in the alternate lists section. Mohini is categorised as "other Avatars" whatever that means. Anyway, raising on the article talk page is the place to start with this, or if you can cite reliable sources, you can edit the article directly. SpinningSpark 17:19, 6 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Google Images imported the file image for File:Teodoras Daukantas,Lithuanian Cabinet Defense Minister , ( 1884-1960) .jpg, from the European Nation of Lithuania. 17:56, 5 August 2014 Sphilbrick (talk | contribs) deleted page File:Teodoras Daukantas,Lithuanian Cabinet Defense Minister , ( 1884-1960) .jpg (F4: Lack of licensing information)

The Created page of my ancestor Teodoras Daukantas ,http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teodoras_Daukantas is preceded by another ancestor of mine ,Wikipedia Free Encyclopedia source , Simonas Daukantas ,http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simonas_Daukantas .

My question is relevant only if I will experience difficulty in moving the image to the creative commons? Can you help in any way?

You do not have the copyright holder's permission to use the image. You cannot upload it either here or at Commons. SpinningSpark 18:22, 6 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Paul Sapiano Page

[edit]

Hi there

My name is Paul Sapiano and I am a writer/director

I am currently in post production on my third film "driving while black"

My debut movie "The Boys and Girls Guide to Getting Down" opened at Manns Chinese and won a bunch of awards at various film festivals I am currently suing MIllenium and First Look (distribution company) as they a have never paid me a cent and the film has grossed $16m according to our forensic accountant

My second film, like the first one , sold to Showtime.

what needs to happen before I can get a wikipedia page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.240.108.134 (talk) 16:04, 6 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Paul. Two things need to happen. First, several reliable sources, independent of you, such as major newspapers or websites with a reputation for fact checking need to write at length about you (not just particular films of yours). This may already have happened - I haven't looked - but without it it is impossible to write a satisfactory article, because there would be no usable references. Secondly, somebody who is not you, or closely associated with you, needs to decide to write the article: see conflict of interest for why it should not be you. If you can assemble the necessary references, then you could post a request at requested articles: but be aware that there is quite a backlog. You should also be aware that if you are involved in a lawsuit, it may be that the reliable sources that have written about you will not necessarily take your part, and you have absolutely no control over what goes into a Wikipedia article about you, provided it is properly sourced: see law of unintended consequences. --ColinFine (talk) 20:58, 6 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Password

[edit]

Hello. I just opened a new email account, but need to change my login password. Can you walk me through the process? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Follyismine (talkcontribs) 16:18, 6 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Go to Special:Preferences and click "Change password" in the "Basic information" box. SpinningSpark 18:30, 6 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
If you have opened an email account, this sounds to me as if this is nothing to do with Wikipedia, and you are asking at the wrong place. This is the Help Desk for Wikipedia. Sorry. --20:59, 6 August 2014 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by ColinFine (talkcontribs) 20:59, 6 August 2014‎ (UTC)[reply]

How to

[edit]

How Do I upload a picture to a new Wiki Article? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Theforeignerman (talkcontribs) 17:30, 6 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

See Help:Files for an overview. You need to be WP:Autoconfirmed to upload files on Wikipedia; for you that will take a few more days and few more edits. —teb728 t c 21:01, 6 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
If the picture copyright belongs to you personally or its copyright has definitely expired, you can use the Upload Wizard to upload it to Commons, which does not have a restriction on new contributors. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 21:14, 6 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
But if you are working on (and hopefully not for) Elementum Entertainment, your pictures will probably belong to the company. —teb728 t c 22:49, 6 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion policy

[edit]

Just a thought. All deletions should be clearly marked with a blank titled deleted information, such that anyone looking at any particular item is aware that the information is amended.

I do not approve of the latest deletion legislation.92.0.74.33 (talk) 18:47, 6 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there. Assuming you're talking about articles, if you try to visit a deleted article (such as Joseph C. Zoransky) you'll notice that the page is clearly marked as deleted, along with the reason for deletion. If you are referring to information within an article, clicking the View History tab allows you to see what information has been added/removed/changed and by whom. Your account was created in 2008 before the unified login system. You can go to Special:MergeAccount and unify the account. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:51, 6 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
