People from Huntingdonshire category question

[edit]

Not sure if this is the correct place for this query...

Huntingdonshire became a district of Cambridgeshire in 1974. I have been adding people to Category:People from Huntingdonshire (district) but I there also exists Category:People from Huntingdonshire which purports to include "people from localities that were part of the county of Huntingdonshire", so should I

  1. be adding people to both categories ?
  2. Or should people born before 1974 be added to the latter and those born before 1974 be added to the former ?
  3. Or should all people be added to Category:People from Huntingdonshire and none to Category:People from Huntingdonshire (district)
  4. Or should Category:People from Huntingdonshire be deleted (or at least redirected to Category:People from Huntingdonshire (district) ?

Is option 3 what I ought to be using (as I have just realized I appear to be the only one to have added people to Category:People from Huntingdonshire (district) ?

Note there also exists Category:People from Huntingdonshire (before 1974) which redirects to Category:People from Huntingdonshire

Thanks GrahamHardy (talk) 07:16, 30 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Think I'll just move everyone from Category:People from Huntingdonshire (district) to Category:People from Huntingdonshire so as to go with the flow ! GrahamHardy (talk) 14:44, 30 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Only 4 people left in Category:People from Huntingdonshire (district) (that I didn't put there) will move them also...GrahamHardy (talk) 17:55, 30 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Nobody left now, but curiously Category:People from Huntingdonshire is not in Category:People from Cambridgeshire, whereas Category:People from Huntingdonshire (district) is, which cannot be right, Added Category:People from Huntingdonshire to Category:People from Huntingdonshire (district), ho hum. Infoboxes and quoteboxes

[edit]

Does an IB prevent a quotebox from being placed directly opposite it? I've found an example of where an image sits OK opposite an IB, but a T:QB doesn't seem to be having any of it. Any suggestions, royal helpdeskers? >SerialNumber54129...speculates 10:39, 30 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Text should not be squeezed between an image and an infobox per MOS:IMGLOC (though often is) so I imagine the same would probably apply to a blockquote or quote box. I would not think there's anything in the software to prevent it...It is more likely something in the (current) formatting which is causing an issue. Eagleash (talk) 10:50, 30 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I don't think anything prevents this from happening too, as long as the quote box is set to align = left and the width is adjusted accordingly. Alex Shih (talk) 10:52, 30 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Which page is it? Always name the page you want help with. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:09, 30 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

BIOGRAPHY

SYNOPSIS

Born on 15 March 1960, in Kamina, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Bernard Katompa is a seasoned business leader with a proven track record of making things happen. He is currently a Businessman and Civic Leader committed to giving his best contribution to the development of his country and the African continent.

For five years (from 2007 to 2012), Bernard was Chief Executive Officer of Liberty Africa, a Financial Institution he started from scratch on behalf of the Liberty Group to provide insurance and wealth products to the untapped African market and create value for all stakeholders. During this period, as the first Chief Executive Officer of Liberty Africa, he managed to successfully establish Liberty’s presence in 16 African countries. He stepped down from this role in August 2012 to focus on his political aspirations which he believes will help create a better humanity.   He joined Liberty from BHP Billiton, where he had a successful professional career, having started in Internal Audit in 1992 in Johannesburg, South Africa, to end up as one of the top Senior Exwww.bernardkatompa.netecutives of the World’s largest resource company in 2007. He is multilingual and has worked/led businesses in Africa, North America, Latin America, Australasia and Europe, turning loss making entities into profitable operations. His international languages include English and French.   Bernard is a Professional Accountant with a number of academic qualifications that include: Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Sciences, Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting and Auditing, Honours Bachelor’s Degree in Finance Management, Master’s Degree in Business/Finance Management and AMP Certificate from Harvard Business School.   Married to Françoise N.T. Katompa, for 33 years, the couple has two children, Alain M Katompa, engaged to Chloé Mpinga and Pamela Tshiany, married to Glenn Tshiany. The greatest joy of the family is provided by their two grandchildren, Layla Tshiany and her younger brother, Luca Tshiany.

CHILDHOOD

With the unrest in the DRC following its independence from Belgium on 30 June 1960, Bernard’s parents moved from Kamina to the diamond rich province of Kasai where Bernard completed his primary and high school with the highest honours and this, in extremely poor conditions. His primary aspiration was to become a catholic priest but, after spending four years in Seminary, he opted for a secular life which allowed him to travel to Kinshasa where he started his higher education.   His undergraduate degrees were obtained at the Higher Institute of Commerce in Kinshasa, DRC where he enrolled simultaneously in Accounting and Computer Sciences and obtained both degrees in the same year.    Bernard had an excellent relationship with his parents who, together with the entire neighbourhood took pride in his behaviour, performance and achievements as a young man for whom only the sky was the limit.

PROFESSIONAL LIFE

GECAMINES In 1984, Bernard joined Gecamines, a Congolese mining company with uranium, cobalt, zinc and copper operations throughout the Katanga province, with Head Offices located in Lubumbashi and Brussels as Head of the Budget and Follow-up department.   He successfully led the Millennium project aimed at implementing a fully integrated financial application system covering inventory management, purchasing and supplier payment in Belgium and the DRC from 1986 to 1987.   His efforts were rewarded by a bonus payment which he and his wife used to open their first Supermarket (grocery store) and to establish a car rental company which were destroyed by the looting of 1992, after Bernard and his family had relocated to Johannesburg, South Africa in 1991, leaving behind a number of properties which are currently occupied by family members. INFAST TOOLS   From September 1991 to May 1992, Bernard was employed by INFAST TOOLS (a company supplying mining equipment) in Denver, Johannesburg as Commercial and I.T. Manager.   During this period, he created new market opportunities which increased the value of the company in supplying mining equipmenttotheDRC. He was head-hunted by Gencor (currently known as BHP Billiton) which he joined as Senior Internal Auditor in June 1992.   BHP BILLITON   Bernard had a fascinating career at BHP Billiton having been the first black person to be employed as Audit Manager in the South African mining industry before the democratic elections of 1994 which saw Nelson Mandela becoming President.   With the apartheid system, the environment in South Africa was so challenging that he was sometimes treated as the driver of Mr. Bernard before knowing that it was him. After creating the I.T. Audit department (which did not exist before his time) and promoting the concept of system approach to I.T. auditing, Bernard was appointed the first I.T. Audit Manager within the Group. In this role, he managed to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of business activities throughout the organization by developing, implementing and enforcing the necessary policies and procedures, aimed at enhancing the level of internal controls. He was a few months later appointed Group Audit Manager, covering BHP Billiton’s operations worldwide. He succeeded in changing the nature of the Auditing department from a policing function to a management tool which assisted the company in significantly improving its operational and financial performance.   In June 1997, following the acquisition of Billiton by Gencor, Bernard was transferred to Canada as Finance Director with a mandate to turn around the North American operations which had poor performance and could not positively contribute to the bottom line of the Group. He succeeded in his mission and in addition facilitated the acquisition of Rio Algom which gave Billiton an expanded footprint in various Latin American countries. He moved his office from Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec to Toronto, Canada where the Head Office of Rio Algom was located. He was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Selnor Mining, Inc, a division of Billiton Metals Canada in 1998.   Subsequent to the merger between BHP and Billiton to create BHP Billiton, Bernard was, in July 2002, appointed Global General Manager of the newly created Base Metals Risk Management and Control department and moved from Toronto to Houston, Texas, USA. He successfully embedded effective risk management practice into business activities and improved the risk profile of the entire Base Metals Customer Sector Group.   In February 2003, with the need for a strong leadership in the Manganese division, Bernard was requested to relocate to South Africa to take up the role of Senior Vice-President and Chief Financial Officer of Samancor with full responsibility over the Global Manganese Group which had operations in South Africa, Australia and the USA.   He was appointed at the same time Chairman of the Samancor Foundation, established to fulfil corporate social responsibilities and uplift the living conditions of local communities.   In March 2007, he was appointed Leader of the Sangaredi Bauxite Project, assigned the responsibility of developing a bauxite mine and an alumina refinery in Guinea (Conakry) as part of the BHP Billiton expansion plans in the aluminium business. He relocated to Paris, France for four months and then moved to Brisbane, Australia, where he stayed until joining the Liberty Group in September 2007.   Bernard has accumulated a wealth of knowledge in the mining industry and has been treated by many as a geologist, mining engineer or metallurgist based on his achievements in both base and precious metals operations. As a result of his successes he was nicknamed “Mr. Turnaround”, having enhanced the profitability of various mining entities.

LIBERTY GROUP

Considering its plan to replicate its Wealth Creation and Management businesses in Africa, the Liberty Group head hunted Bernard who accepted to join the Organisation in September 2007, founded Liberty Africa and became its first Chief Executive Officer.   During the five year period in this role, Bernard developed excellent relationship with various African governments and established Liberty’s presence in 16 countries.   Whilst providing insurance and wealth products which are still underdeveloped in many parts of the continent, he managed to make Liberty part of the fabric of the countries in which it operated and created a strong emotional connection with local communities. His contribution in enhancing the culture of saving and investment in those communities has remained unforgettable.   In July 2012, Bernard made a tough decision to step down as Chief Executive Officer of Liberty Africa (his own creation) in order to prepare his political career as he feels the obligation of giving his best contribution to the Congolese people after a successful career around the world.

Communities

Throughout Bernard’s professional career he has engaged in numerous community upliftment initiatives. He has been a strong advocate for the empowerment of women and children and was recognized by the Pan African Women's Economic Empowerment Summit for his exemplary efforts to create, build and empower communities. He championed the fight against rape in the Greater Nelspruit region of South Africa - in particular he created the Standing Together Against Rape (STAR) initiative. Bernard’s other community related activities have covered, inter alia, environmental protection projects, roads construction, youth development, building of schools, libraries, medical centres and omni-sports stadiums. Considering his personal values, achievements and aspirations, he has been proclaimed  a GOODWILL AMBASSADOR by the State of Georgia, in the USA.www.bernardkatompa.net — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bernardkatompa (talkcontribs) 11:46, 30 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

infobox discrepancy

[edit]

I don't know much about infobox maintenance, so this may be an obvious thing, but I've just noticed that the {{infobox book | lists the book title outside the infobox, whereas every other infobox I checked lists the title inside the created box.

Is this intentional, and if so - why? There may be other examples of both inside and out, but shouldn't there be consistency? Chaheel Riens (talk) 12:12, 30 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Infobox#Title allows both forms. There are many infoboxes of both types. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:45, 30 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong information about my grandfather

[edit]

Dear Sir/Madam There have been pages on Wikipedia about my grandfather "Youssef El-Guindy" for several years. They all had wrong information that i repeatedly tried to correct and failed because they got all reverted. The last page about my grandfather "https://ar.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D9%8A%D9%88%D8%B3%D9%81_%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AC%D9%86%D8%AF%D9%8A" has the photo of my father instead. I tried to upload a correct photo and wrote a note on the current one explaining that is it for the wrong person. This got reverted as well. What can i do to fix this???

Echo Global Logistics Wiki Deleted

[edit]

Hello, I represent Echo Global Logistics. Our company wiki was deleted after an attempt to edit the outstanding alerts regarding company promotion. Actually deleted 01:11 on 30 January. That was the 5th deletion. The first thing the OP needs to do is to read about conflict of interest and about paid editing. --David Biddulph (talk) 15:26, 30 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Also independent verifiable sources, neutral and encyclopaedic, copyright. Jimfbleak - talk to me? 15:41, 30 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Trent.raleigh. I fear you are making the very common mistake of supposing that Wikipedia has any role at all in how your company presents itself. It does not, and attempts to use it in that way tend to be strongly resisted by many of the volunteers who create and maintain the encyclopaedia. If at some time Wikipedia has an article on your company, it will be just that: Wikipedia's article about your company. It will not be your article, you will have very little say in what is in it. Such an article will not be based in any significant way on what the company or its associates say or want to say, but almost entirely on what people who have no connection with the company have chosen to publish around it in reliable organs. Only if there is sufficient independent material to ground an article will it be possible to write one. --ColinFine (talk) 18:08, 30 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I can find no evidence that you have ever edited Zyklon B while logged in as Rane2300. When did you add the image? Maproom (talk) 18:17, 30 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Rane2030: Are you by any chance referring to an image added to Anula Karunathilaka at some point? (Because of the lack of edit summaries, I cannot quickly see when it was added). If so, it was deleted in this edit because of lack of permission at commons. Please sign your posts on talk pages by typing four tildes (~~~~) and if starting a different topic, create a new section (see tab at top of page) and provide a link to an article you wish to discuss. Thank you. Eagleash (talk) 18:41, 30 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Note: rane2030 I am a bit confused about what happened, some how something gone wrong in the page. I did not edit Zyklon B article (I have no qualification to do so!). As you have noticed, I had some problems uploading an image to the article Anula Karunathilaka you are referring to. I am not a Wikipedia expert I too depend on serious editors. Please if there is anything I can do please let me know. Thank you.Rane2030 08:03, 31 January 2018 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rane2030 (talkcontribs)

@Rane2030: There are posts at your talk page in respect of this issue and a thread at Wikipedia:Files for discussion/2018 January 30#File:Anula Karunathilka-Dec-2-2017.jpeg. You need to urgently contribute to that discussion and explain that you have the necessary permission and ask for advice on how to establish that permission so the file can be used. Thank you. Should a page be created

[edit]

I am listed as author of music in several articles in Wikipedia This music has become quite popular and was released and released by several noted artists Inc Nelly, Chris Brown and NAS Is it ok to create a stub that can be linked to my name ? ( There was an incident of copyright violation by EMI and Universal in one release where I was not properly attrubuted and they have since corrected that. Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mikeclaxton (talkcontribs) 18:31, 30 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The standard for creating a new article at Wikipedia is The article is about a subject that has significant coverage in reliable source that are independent of the topic. Which is to say that if there exists, right now, outside of Wikipedia, multiple reliable sources that have written extensive biographies of your life and work, and that those sources are entirely unconnected to you and your employers and associations. In that case an article could be created. Wikipedia's conflict of interest rules recommend against being involved in such work yourself, so the best thing you can do is to go to Wikipedia:Requested articles, where you request the article be created by someone else, and include as many of those reliable sources they can use to create the text of that article. I hope that helps! --Jayron32 18:53, 30 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Ref within footnote

[edit]

I'm trying to add a footnote with an embedded reference to High Point High School. I read WP:REFNEST and tried to use refn, but the resulting page only has a single group of references. Could someone look at this diff and tell me what I'm doing wrong? BillHPike (talk, contribs) 20:23, 30 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Billhpike: I have replaced {{reflist|note}} with {{reflist|group=note}}. The parameter after "refn" in the reference itself needs to match the second parameter of the "reflist" template. Let me know if that looks OK. Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 20:49, 30 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
