How do I enter an image?

[edit]

I want to enter a pdf image in existing article. How do I do it? Mwprods2 (talk) 01:11, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

hi @Mwprods2 and welcome to the Help Desk! do you mean embedding a PDF file to the wiki or embedding an image (in the png, jpg, svg, or similar file formats) from a PDF file to the wiki? for the latter, it should just be the same as embedding a regular image. happy editing! 💜  melecie  talk - 01:29, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How can I suggest a new page?

[edit]

New to the community. How can I suggest a new page (for a biography)? Nlaing (talk) 02:49, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

h @Nlaing and welcome to Wikipedia! if you want, you can undertake that task yourself, see Your first article as well as Reliable sources and Notability for other essential guidelines if you'd like to undertake it, but I suggest that you start by editing existing articles first as creating a brand new article is a difficult task for newcomers to take. you can also check out Requested articles if you'd simply like to suggest topics for a possible article, however there is no guarantee that articles listed here would be made at all. happy editing! 💜  melecie  talk - 03:24, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Nlaing. There is a direct answer to your question, which is to add it to requested articles. However, that is nearly useless: the chances of a request being picked up from there is pretty low.
The remaining alternatives are to write it yourself (which melecie advised you about - I strongly echo their recommendation to get a significant amount of experience in editing Wikipedia first) - or to interest somebody else in working on such an article, with you or on your own. Your best bet of the latter (though it's probably still not a very high likelihood of success) is to find a WikiProject that relates to the person, and ask at the talk page of that WikiProject. Good luck! ColinFine (talk) 11:25, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! 2603:7000:9AF0:62B0:1827:B5B6:E2F5:4139 (talk) 14:47, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

How much attribution is required for copying content from a page in user space?

[edit]

I'm currently working on expanding Ida Saxton McKinley to get it to GA (and maybe FA) status and I do a lot of my work in this userpage so that the edits don't disrupt the normal page. After I feel that any expansion work in the user page is suitable for the main space, I copy it over and give an edit summary saying that it was copied (but I haven't given a wikilink). I am the only one who has edited that page thus far. After I've completed all major expansion work, I want the page deleted. It suddenly struck me that I might not be following Wikipedia's rules about copying within Wikipedia but I wasn't able to find anything that gave insight into this sort of copying. What should I be doing? ❤HistoryTheorist❤ 04:18, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@HistoryTheorist: My understanding is that if you are copying something you wrote from one place to another, it's still being attributed to you - so I think it would be fine. (It would be basically the same situation as if you wrote a revision to an article in some other text editor and then copied it to an article: even though you can't see a detailed revision history, all the text written by you is attributed to you, and the history of other editors in the article is unchanged.) Film adaptations of The Bermuda Triangle

[edit]

There are two different film adaptations of Charles Berlitz's novel The Bermuda Triangle, one released in 1978 and one in 1979. the Wiki page is mainly for the 1978 film but seems to conflate certain details with the 1979 movie, including its poster. I know very little about how to edit Wikipedia and would apricate some direction to the relevent area to correct this article The Bermuda Triangle (film) - Wikipedia The Bermuda Triangle (1978) - IMDb The Bermuda Triangle (1979) - IMDb Ford Tucker (talk) 04:37, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Ford Tucker: Hi there! The best place to discuss the issues with a specific article is the article's talk page, in this case Talk:The Bermuda Triangle (film). You could start a new section there with your concerns, ideas for improvement, and both IMDb URLs. To learn how to edit, you can start at Help:Introduction. Thanks, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 05:42, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Not directly on topic, but I don't think the book is a novel. I remember reading it years ago. As I recall it's more of a journalistic treatment. AndyJones (talk) 13:43, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Very much so: it's a fairly credulous compilation and redaction of cherry picked news reports, embellished accounts, modern legends and plain invention into a superficially convincing 'non-fiction' work: as is the case for other books by this writer. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 176.24.47.60 (talk) 17:11, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Measuring the total number of references to a specific domain, search and massviews give very different answers

[edit]

Hi all

I'm trying to help FAO understand how much their website is used as a reference source for Wikipedia articles. I know of two ways of doing this:

  1. The search tool in Wikipedia, this gives a total number of articles which is quite helpful.
  2. Massviews which gives a total number and also pageviews (which is really helpful)

However there is a problem, the search tool give me a total of 6,994, but Massviews gives me a total of 5,708, which is a really big differece.

Does anyone know why this difference is happening? Is the search tool in Wikipedia counting every instance of a URL and Massviews counting only every article? Or is something else happening?

Thanks very much

Difficulty in request to join Wikimedia LGBT+ User Group

[edit]

I would like to join this mission to increase representation of LGBTQ+ people globally regardless of place of origin, across Wikimedia. I saw the initiative recently, but unfortunately the membership form at Google Forms https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScN7CBFOxzarJ4jseQuMeYRm0NnMZCiHYwDpoL8TnXYs4EuQw/viewform seems to be no longer accepting responses.

Is there any way for interested individuals to join the initiative right now?

Can I register via email even though the 31 October, 2023 deadline for membership registration to be eligible for 2023 Elections voting has passed? — CrafterNova [ TALK ] [ CONT ] 07:31, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

CrafterNova, you could ask this at meta:Talk:Wikimedia LGBT+. TSventon (talk) 10:47, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@TSventon: On 17 November 2023, I had started the discussion meta:Talk:Wikimedia_LGBT+##TheySaid_Wikiquote_campaign there, and there has not been any response for more than 2 months. The last significantly active discussion at the talk page occurred between 9 and 20 October 2023.
Most of the members do not seem to be active, and I find it difficult to see who is active even though may not be discussing or editing.
That's why I have asked here. — CrafterNova [ TALK ] [ CONT ] 11:24, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@CrafterNova: you could ping Bluerasberry, who seems to be active and said If anyone has questions then ask here or through any of the above links. It would make sense to keep any discussion on meta. There is apparently an online meeting in a couple of days including User Group Administrative/ Governance Updates, see meta:Wikimedia LGBT/2024-01-24. TSventon (talk) 11:56, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I discuss this with Bluerasberry now. Thank you for letting me know. — CrafterNova [ TALK ] [ CONT ] 12:06, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I replied at meta:Talk:Wikimedia_LGBT+#Joining_Wikimedia_LGBT+_-_state_of_membership. Bluerasberry (talk) 16:06, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia

[edit]

Hello Good morning I will like to Make My Wikipedia Page For TQDatManye How Can I Go By Summiting The Paperwork TQDatManye (talk) 11:41, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You can't. Wikipedia is not social media. We have articles only on subjects that meet our notability criteria, as demonstrated through significant coverage in independent published reliable sources. See WP:MUSICBIO for the relevant criteria. AndyTheGrump (talk) 11:48, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have deleted the page User:TQDatManye as an attempt at misusing Wikipedia as a web host. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. Contributors to it may use their user pages to say something about themselves as editors of Wikipedia. Incidentally, while you are welcome to contribute to Wikipedia's articles, you should do so capitalizing only where capitalizing is conventional. -- Hoary (talk) 12:33, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Login Issues

[edit]

I am not able to recall my Login Email id 103.14.235.42 (talk) 12:49, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately if you cannot remember your email address, then there is no way to recover your account. Qcne (talk) 14:30, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Do you mean that you don't remember your account name? That is not usually an email address - if you attached an email to the account, that will have been private.
If you can remember some articles you edited, you can look through their history and see if you can recognise your account name. ColinFine (talk) 15:13, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If you set an email address for your account, you can go to Special:PasswordReset and enter your email address to get your account name mailed to you. RudolfRed (talk) 17:20, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Trouble taking a break.

[edit]

I've been trying to take a break from reading/editing, but I become incredibly nervous when I try to take a break that I might have done something wrong, and I need to check to make sure no one has tried to tell me. Please help. Industrial Insect (talk) 16:10, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Have you tried the Wikibreak Enforcer? 57.140.16.1 (talk) 16:54, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Industrial Insect: The Wikibreak Enforcer script will stop you from editing, but not reading. Another option is to go to Preferences > User profile and add your email address, and then Preferences > Notifications to set up email notifications for things such as "Edits to my user talk page" and "Mention". You'll receive emails when someone has tried to tell you something, so you won't need to check Wikipedia for notifications. Hope this helps! GoingBatty (talk) 17:16, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! Industrial Insect (talk) 17:24, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This might be my technical incompetence, but the Wikibreak Enforcer doesn't seem to keep me logged out. Industrial Insect (talk) 19:10, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Industrial Insect: I see the code you added to User:Industrial_Insect/common.js has a date of 2023 instead of 2024. GoingBatty (talk) 19:28, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oops. Incompetence it is then. Thank You! Industrial Insect (talk) 19:31, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Tony Da

[edit]

What happened to the Wikipedia page for famed potter Tony Da of San Ildefonso Pueblo? The dependable Wikipedia portion of the artist's biography disappeared overnight, only to be replaced with information provided by a cyber squatter. Please help restore the page. I can work to provide access to Tony Da's progenitors if you need intellectual or copyright permissions.

Don Dhwltd (talk) 18:00, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Do you know the title of the former article? I checked the logs for Tony Da just now but there has never been an article at that title. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 18:05, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
What is the name of the replaced article. You may be thinking of the article about his father, Popovi Da. The German Wikipedia has an article about Tony, with a reference, but the English Wikipedia has not had one by his name removed as far as I can tell. StarryGrandma (talk) 18:11, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) I see that he is mentioned in his father's biography, Popovi Da, but we don't seem to have ever had a separate article about him. Are you sure the biography was on Wikipedia, and not some other website? Cyber squatting is usually not possible here, although spammers do hijack articles from time to time we restore them pretty quickly. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 18:14, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The first page, in my opinion, should be eliminated; five lines and not even a reference (this would mean that one could create any article, write five lines and not add any references...); the second and third pages, which absolutely must not be deleted, have the same references throughout the article (for the second page only one but repeated more than 15 times). JackkBrown (talk) 20:06, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hia @JackkBrown. I would suggest you could do three things:
- propose the articles for deletion.
- try and find more sources (usually at least three) to improve the article.
- add in a maintenance template.
I'm not wholly sure how much the Help Desk here can assist with this since you don't really ask a question. Are you looking for specific help? Qcne (talk) 20:15, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@JackkBrown: Greetings. I was the one who reverted your addition of an Articles for Deletion tag to US Vigor Senigallia. Nominating an article for AfD is a multistep process for which tagging the article is merely Step 1--as noted in my edit summary, the instructions for this process can be found at WP:AFDHOWTO. (Please also note that my reversion of your edit was purely a matter of process and procedure and was in no way an endorsement of the presence or current state of that article.) Feel free to ask questions if you need further assistance. Thanks! --Finngall talk 21:50, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I also am puzzled what your concern is with these two Catholic cardinals. Cardinals are pretty much automatically notable and thus suitable for Wikipedia. Lunati has three sources, and while Arcimboldi relies solely (at the present time) on one, there is, for example, this article (in Italian). Clarityfiend (talk) 21:54, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Clarityfiend: "which absolutely must not be deleted"; these two pages require further references. JackkBrown (talk) 21:59, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As do a gazillion others. You could try asking for help at Wikipedia:WikiProject Catholicism. Hopefully, an Italian-speaker can make use of the article I found. Clarityfiend (talk) 22:13, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
JackkBrown, this is just another of countless examples of you asking for help on the Help Desk when you are clearly better informed about the issue than anyone else. Do I need to page block you from the Help Desk to stop you from wasting other editor's time? Please answer my question with frankness and specificity. Cullen328 (talk) 08:20, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Cullen328: by asking this, I learnt how to correctly initiate a page deletion procedure. JackkBrown (talk) 18:10, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Cannot find where a URL name is defined under EDIT

[edit]

Please go to page under this TALK topic: Talk:Siege of Jerusalem (70 CE)#HELP: Found "Dead" Link, But Cannot Find It To Edit! Daniel B. Sedory (talk) 20:23, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@TheStarman: The link is made by {{Cite Josephus}}. The first example there is also broken so I guess the template needs an update. Don't try to do that yourself. I'm pinging Daask who edited the template in 2018 and is still active. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:41, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
{{Cite Josephus}} actually makes the link by calling {{PACEJ}} but Daask has also edited that template which is where the broken url to https://pace.webhosting.rug.nl comes from. I don't know whether the error is temporary or permanent. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:52, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! Please be sure that Daask is aware of the two URLs I made available... I believe the one that was already in use on the page at perseus.tufts.edu will be rather permanent compared to archive.org, since it is a university that even studies Josephus in GREEK which I actually used today! Email

[edit]

Hello! Am I in the right place? I have a question: I've set an email address and I tried using the button "Email this user" on myself, but I couldn't because "You cannot send email to other users on this wiki"; then I tried on a random user and the result was the same. Why? Thanks for your help! Jeannejacques (talk) 21:44, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@~: You may need to enable the "Allow other users to email me" setting to be able to send email. RudolfRed (talk) 00:18, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The setting is at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-personal-email. PrimeHunter (talk) 04:22, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your help. I had a look to my Preferences, this is what I see: "Allow other users to email me" and "Allow emails from brand-new users" already flagged; "Send password reset emails only when both email address and username are provided", "Send me copies of emails I send to other users", "Email me when a page or a file on my watchlist is changed", "Email me also for minor edits of pages and files" not flagged. What have I got to change to be able to use my email address to send emails? I tried again sending an email to myself but the result was again "You cannot send email to other users on this wiki". Jeannejacques (talk) 07:20, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Jeannejacques You say you have set an email address but have you confirmed it to the syatem? You have to do that before you can email other users. See H:ECON. Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:49, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I clicked on the link sent by email and confirmed the address. Jeannejacques (talk) 17:05, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Jeannejacques: New users sometimes confuse us with other websites. Do you have the problem here at https://en.wikipedia.org, e.g. at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:EmailUser/PrimeHunter? PrimeHunter (talk) 20:36, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Jeannejacques: I have received a mail from you. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:27, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, I did it! How was I able to send an email to you if I can't even send one to myself? Jeannejacques (talk) 22:33, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Did you try it at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:EmailUser/Jeannejacques? PrimeHunter (talk) 22:53, 23 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it says: "You cannot send email to other users on this wiki". Jeannejacques (talk) 07:40, 24 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Jeannejacques: If there is something at "Prohibit these users from emailing me" at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-personal-email then remove it. Try to disable "Allow other users to email me" and "Allow emails from brand-new users", save preferences, log out, log back in and enable them again. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:08, 24 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If it still fails then log out, see your IP address after "User:" on Special:MyPage, copy it to "IP address, username or block ID" at Special:BlockList and click "Search". Does it show a block or does it say "No matching blocks found for the requested IP address or username"? PrimeHunter (talk) 14:19, 24 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've tried what you suggested. There isn't anything under "Prohibit these users from emailing me". For my IP address it said "No matching blocks found for the requested IP address or username.". I've also disabled both the "Allow" options, logged out, logged back, enabled them but the same message appears when I try sending an email to myself. The thing I don't understand is why when I tried sending an email to you it worked. Jeannejacques (talk) 18:39, 24 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Edits being removed

[edit]

I recently made edits to the page for Mal Roche, soccer player, for his Youth section using data published in newspaper articles found via Newspapers.com. The edits were then indicated as having been removed a day or two later. I re-entered the data and again see that they are now removed. Can you explain why this factual data on the Youth for Mal Roach are being removed and how I can ensure that the data is not removed moving forward? Thank you. 2600:1012:B1CB:FB7A:495:456C:266E:D519 (talk) 22:26, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

When you add material to Wikipedia you also need to add a reference to the source of the material or it will be removed. It is not enough to be a fact, it has to have been published in a reliable source and shown to be that by including a reference to that source. For how to do that see the "Referencing" sections at Help:Introduction. StarryGrandma (talk) 22:34, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If you found the information on Newspapers.com, then you need to cite the specific newspaper article. You can use Template: Cite news. Cullen328 (talk) 22:59, 22 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
