    Requests for permissions

This page enables administrators to handle requests for permissions on the English Wikipedia. Administrators are able to modify account creator, autopatrolled, confirmed, file mover, extended confirmed, mass message sender, new page reviewer, page mover, pending changes reviewer, rollback, and template editor rights, and AutoWikiBrowser access.

Editors wishing to request a permission flag here should do so following the procedure below. Editors requesting permissions are advised to periodically revisit the requests page, as notifications will not always be given after a decision is made. Editors should not expect their request to be answered right away and should remember to be patient when filing a request. To find out what permissions your account has, go to Special:Preferences, where your permissions are listed in the user profile tab under "Member of groups".

Requests for permissions are archived regularly; please see Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Archive for an index of past requests.

    Permissions

    Handled here

    • Account creator (add request · view requests): The account creator flag is granted to users who are active in the request an account process. The flag removes the limit on the maximum number of new accounts that can be created in a 24 hour period. It also allows users to make accounts with names similar to other accounts. The account creator flag is only given to users who participate in the ACC process and may be removed without notice should a user's participation in the account creation process cease.
    • Autopatrolled (add request · view requests): The autopatrolled flag is granted to users who are active in the creation of new articles. This tool is granted so their creations are auto patrolled in Special:NewPages. Unlike other requests, any user may nominate an editor for Autopatrolled, even without that user's consent. A user who wishes to have this flag generally should have created at least 25 articles and must be trusted, experienced, and must have demonstrated they are familiar with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines, especially WP:BLP and Wikipedia:Notability.
    • AutoWikiBrowser (add request · view requests): AutoWikiBrowser is a semi-automated MediaWiki editor for Microsoft Windows, designed to make tedious repetitive tasks quicker and easier. It is essentially a browser that automatically opens up a new page when the last is saved. When set to do so, it suggests some changes (typically formatting) that are generally meant to be incidental to the main change. Please read the rules of use and registration requirements on the main page before requesting permission. This is not a true user right, but access needs to be granted by administrators just like other permissions. If approved, your name will be added to the CheckPage. Users with under 250 non-automated mainspace edits or 500 total mainspace edits are rarely approved. You will need to give a reason for wanting AWB access.
    • Confirmed (add request · view requests): The confirmed flag may be granted to new users who have not yet hit the threshold for autoconfirmed status. These are users who have not had both 10 edits and 4 days experience. People with this flag can upload files and edit semi-protected pages before hitting the autoconfirmed flag. Users requesting this flag must indicate clearly why they should be exempted from the customary confirmation period.
    • Event coordinator (add request · view requests): The event coordinator user right allows editors to create multiple new accounts, and to temporarily confirm accounts so that they can create new articles.
    • Extended confirmed (add request · view requests): The extended confirmed flag is normally automatically added to accounts after 500 edits and 30 days, but may be added to legitimate alternate accounts of users that already have this access. The flag allows users to edit pages under extended confirmed protection.
    • File mover (add request · view requests): The file mover user right is intended to allow users experienced in working with files to rename them, subject to policy, with the ease that autoconfirmed users already enjoy when renaming Wikipedia articles.
    • Mass message sender (add request · view requests): Mass message sender enables users to send messages to multiple users at once. This flag is given to users who have made requests for delivery in the past, clearly showing an understanding of the guidance for use.
    • New page reviewer (add request · view requests): The new page reviewer user right allows users to mark pages as patrolled and use the page curation toolbar. At administrators' discretion, the right may be accorded on a time limited basis or indefinite.
    • Page mover (add request · view requests): The page mover user right allows users experienced in working with article names to move them, subject to policy, without leaving behind a redirect. They may also move all subpages when moving the parent page(s). General guidelines include making 3,000 edits and 6 months of editing history. At administrators' discretion, the right may be accorded on a time limited basis or indefinite.
    • Pending changes reviewer (add request · view requests): The reviewer flag is granted to users who are experienced enough with Wikipedia editing and its policies for contributing to the process of reviewing articles placed under pending changes.
    • Rollback (add request · view requests): Rollback enables users to remove vandalism much more quickly and efficiently than by undoing it. Users who do not demonstrate an understanding of what constitutes capable vandalism fighting, either because they have no or little history of doing so, or show a poor ability to discern between good and bad faith edits will not be granted this right. Also, it is unlikely that editors with under 200 mainspace edits will have their request granted. For a more detailed explanation of rollback and information about when it is appropriate to use the tool, see Wikipedia:Rollback. For information about the technical details of the feature, see here.
    • Template editor (add request · view requests): The template editor flag allows users to edit protected templates and Lua modules. General guidelines for granting include making at least 1,000 edits overall (with at least 150 to templates or modules), being a registered user for over a year, and having a record of successfully proposing significant edits to several protected templates. Users should demonstrate proficiency with template syntax and an understanding of the need for caution when editing heavily-used templates.

    Handled elsewhere

Several permissions are requested and handled elsewhere:

    Removal of permissions

If you wish to have any of your permission flags (except administrator) removed, you should contact an administrator. If you want your administrator flag removed, you should contact a bureaucrat.

This is not the place to request review of another user's rights. If you believe someone's actions merit removal of a permission flag, you should raise your concern at the incidents noticeboard.

The bureaucrat, checkuser, and oversight flags are removed at meta:Steward requests/Permissions. Stewards will typically not carry out such requests unless they are made on behalf of the Arbitration Committee, by a user who is requesting their own access be removed, or in cases of an emergency.

    Process

    Requestors

To make a request for a permission, click "add request" next to the appropriate header and fill in the reason for wanting permission.

Any editor may comment on requests for permission.

    Administrators

Administrators are permitted to grant account creator, autopatrolled, confirmed, event coordinator, file mover, mass message sender, new page reviewer, page mover, pending changes reviewer, rollback and template editor flags to any user who meets the criteria explained above and can be trusted not to abuse the tool(s). Administrators may either grant these permissions permanently or temporarily. For convenience, a bot will automatically comment with relevant data if the user does not meet configurable qualifications. Even if the bot does not comment, administrators should review the user's contributions and logs to ensure the tools will be used appropriately and check for any indication of potential misuse.

Once an administrator has granted a permission or decided to deny a request, they should add {{done}} or {{not done}} respectively under the request with their comments. If a user already has the requested permission, or is autoconfirmed and requesting confirmed, {{already done}} should be used. N hours after the last comment was made (as specified by the config), the request will be archived automatically: approved requests will be placed here; declined requests will go here. See User:MusikBot/PermClerk#Archiving for more information on archiving functionality.

    Other editors

Requests for permissions is primarily intended for editors requesting a permission for their own account. Other editors are welcome to comment if they have specific information that is relevant to that request that a patrolling administrator is unlikely to discover for themselves. Otherwise, since only administrators can effectively respond to these requests, general comments or 'clerking' by other users are rarely helpful. Non-administrators cannot "decline" to grant a request, because they're not in a position to accept it.

A limited exception to this is Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Autopatrolled, where third party nominations are encouraged. Other editors should still avoid offering general remarks on requests and leave the final decision to an administrator.

    Autopatrolled

GnocchiFan has made 5,000+ edits this year alone including seven Good Articles. They make extensive use of WMF Library to improve sourcing and prose. I believe they are both an excellent editor and also communicator, evident at sensitive article topics at 1984 anti-Sikh riots and Gender and sexual minorities in the Ottoman Empire. In short, let's reduce NPP backlog by giving them auto-patrolled status. ~ 🦝 Shushugah (he/him • talk) 12:11, 20 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Also worth mentioning GnocchiFan created 84 non redirect articles. One article was deleted Sophie Ottaway 8-months ago. ~ 🦝 Shushugah (he/him • talk) 12:25, 21 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Seems to be an experienced content creator whose creations are no longer in need of input from NPP. They don't have a clean record of their articles being kept at AfD, but the last deletion was a year and half and 60 articles ago, and looking through a random sampling of their work since then doesn't reveal any major issues. TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 04:50, 23 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Meets minimum criteria, only one article out of many created has been deleted (in 2015). Mach61 23:06, 23 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Created 55 articles, none of which were deleted, including BLPs. I believe granting the AP flag to this editor will benefit NPP reviewers by reducing the backlog. GrabUp - Talk 16:00, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Reason for requesting event coordinator rights

I am writing to request as Event Coordinator for Mini Hackathon as part of the 3rd Wikimedia Technology Summit (WTS 2024) that will help unblocking of an IP address range at IIIT Hyderabad campus. This event brings together developers, WikiClub students, and Wikimedians to create solutions for technical challenges in Wikimedia. By focusing on inclusivity and underrepresented languages, we bridge gaps through WikiClub engagement and mini hackathons, fostering lasting connections and driving innovation in open-source development.

Pinging @ScottishFinnishRadish: You seem to have revoked this right. Do you have any objection to restoring it? — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 00:11, 25 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The first edit I reviewed was a BLP violation, and Aoidh said last time it was declined I would suggest slowing down and taking time to show that you can edit constructively in an extremely contentious topic area before making a new request. I'm not terribly impressed. ScottishFinnishRadish (talk) 00:21, 25 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see that anything has changed since the last request. Between tripping the edit filter a few times a few hours ago by trying to edit another editor's user page and their behavior elsewhere, I don't think they're ready for XC. I think at minimum they need to show an understanding of consensus (it's not when there's a dispute and one editor agrees with you) and learn to use edit summaries, especially when constantly reverting others (see Tupac Shakur's history) before they make another such request. If they become XC and this behavior carries over to highly contentious topic areas like WP:ARBPIA, they're going to end up getting blocked or sanctioned very quickly. - Aoidh (talk) 05:36, 26 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Not done Two admins in good standing who are familiar with this case have reviewed recent edits and their feedback is compelling anough to deny the request. Just Step Sideways from this world ..... today 00:22, 1 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to request extended confirmed rights. Although my account has existed for almost three years, and I've been editing wikipedia for longer without one, I do not edit a lot. Even on my home wikipedia I don't edit a lot. I mostly make minor edits (wiki gnoming) which fix small issues with wording, grammar or an incorrectly used template. For this reason, I won't be able to get the extended confirmed rights in the normal way - by waiting - for a long time. I am aware that requests like this usually get denided, but I'll be honest, the only thing the this 500 edits limit is doing is encouraging me to make useless edits ("gaming the system"). Of course I'll never do that, but it is frustrating when I want to fix an incorrectly used template, or other small issue, and can't (this is how I stumbled upon this topic in the first place). Anyway, I'm requesting this premission in order to give myself tools to help wikipedia. I solemnly swear to use it for good (however arbitrarily that may be defined) and not cause problems or trouble.

P.S. If one looks at my contribution history, they may assume that I'm requesting this access in order to vote in this talk page. That is not the case, and if one looks just a bit earlier, they can find the real cause. TheBooker66 (talk) 17:54, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Not done Given the length of time you have had an account, there might be some room for allowing this, but you've only got about 10% of the required amount of edits, and that is just way too far below the expected minimum. We have WP:ECP for a reason, it isn't just to stop people acting in bad faith, it is explicitly to keep very inexperienced users out of contentious topic areas until they've learned a bit more about how to edit here. File mover

I am requesting file mover rights because I have experience in handling and maintaining various file types and I believe my contributions to several files and my various file rename requests as seen in the editing history here showcase my understanding of the naming policy for files. File names are often a decent part of my contributions with film and television-related articles, and carrying out these renames to satisfy naming conventions rather than having to request them every time a file needs to be renamed would prove beneficial in their up-keeping. New page reviewer

I would like to request my NPP temporary approval be made permanent. It is currently set to expire on October 3. I initially requested this level of access to learn more about Wikipedia as a whole and take part in the September backlog drive. With the extended access I have learned more about the use of the Twinkle gadget and have requested notification access to article alerts for WikiProjects I participate in. I have worked to increase my participation in AFD and AFC. I have also used the CSD process for articles that meet the speedy deletion guidelines. I have began use of the copyvio process for evaluating pages and started adding links to foreign language articles about the same subject. I have enjoyed the work I have done during this time and hope to be able to continue to help my fellow editors grow knowledge on Wikipedia. Demt1298 (talk) 13:09, 27 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I often move poorly-titled pages to more appropriate titles, usually to make them more WP:CONCISE, specific, neutral, or to correct spelling and transliterations. I also revert undiscussed moves in line with WP:RMUM. I would greatly appreciate having the ability to manage this myself. Skitash (talk) 21:43, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'd like to get this right to delete unnecessary redirects (i.e. move pages over existing single revision redirects regardless of target). Additionally, I would also like to try to harmonize some pages of Spanish municipalities with the name of the province (when necessary) instead of other subnational units (such as comarca). Moreover if a double denomination exists in some cases, I shall use the slash with spaces in between to enhance visual effect of different linguistic nomenclatures. However if an English form is more relevant I shall use it instead of double and local denominations. Other than that I could help elsewhere to move pages if necessary. Thank you, Nuvolet (talk)

Rollback rights would make it easier for me to revert obvious vandalism. Thanks. Charliehdb (talk) 10:57, 28 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I see that you are failing to consistently warn editors when you revert their edits (e.g. 1, 2, 3). Why? It's important to leave a notification for every revert you make. Are you aware that we have tools such as Twinkle or Ultraviolet that make this extremely easy? -Fastily 08:27, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Fastily: Thanks for pointing it out. I assure you that I will warn all vandals from now on. I hope you give me Rollback rights. Thanks. Charliehdb (talk) 12:40, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Please ensure that you are always leaving warnings. I can't stress enough the importance of not biting the newcomers; if you find yourself reverting good faith edits, then it's especially important to notify the editor. If you don't want to leave a template warning, that's completely fine, but you do need to leave a talk page message explaining why you reverted the edit. Moving forward, could you please make a promise to leave warnings/notifications for every revert? -Fastily 01:08, 1 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I have been reverting edits and warning users by patrolling recent changes for almost two months now. I have been using Twinkle to revert edits but manually warned users. I have consistently warned users most of the time after reverting their edits. I have been patrolling recent changes since 8 August 2024. I think getting Rollback rights would make it easier to revert edits or vandalism. Thank you. PEPSI697 (💬📝) 05:49, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Fastily: Thank you for the response, I promise to consistently warn users after reverting edits. Please also check the tags that I use Twinkle to revert edits as well. Thank you. PEPSI697 (💬📝) 13:00, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Not done I'm truly unimpressed by this. You should know better than that, given how long you've been editing. Rollback is an elevated permission that is only granted to editors with a good understanding of our policies/guidelines. Based on your actions today, I'm not convinced you meet this bar. -Fastily 01:08, 1 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Reason for requesting rollback rights: I have achieved 200 mainspace edits and I am ready to be on Wikipedia's Anti-Vandal task force! I can use tools like AntiVandal, and of course continue to use Twinkle and Ultraviolet. I love patrolling Recent Changes and cant wait to join this exciting opportunity!      Not done You've only made a handful of reverts since your previous request was declined. I'm sorry, but that's just not enough experience for me to determine whether you'll be able to use the right appropriately. If you're still interested in this tool then please spend at least a month actively patrolling RecentChanges before reapplying. Also, please ensure that you are consistently warning editors when you revert their edits. Thanks, Fastily 01:08, 1 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Template editor

I already work on templates from time to time, to improve formatting, fix links, add features, etc. My record speaks for itself that I am careful in making changes. Thanks. P 1 9 9   13:27, 26 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Primefac: My "need for the right, as well as a familiarity with the care and responsibility required" is proven by my overall record and experience with WP, not necessarily meeting an arbitrary guideline limit. Thanks. -- P 1 9 9   15:23, 26 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I made no claims about your need, or lack thereof. I was simply filling out the standard guideline review. Primefac (talk) 15:36, 26 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
