Gaffney and James City Railroad

[edit]

Location and General Description of Property

[edit]

The railroad of the Gaffney and James City Railroad Company, hereinafter called the Gaffney and James City, is a single-track branch line, located entirely within the State of Pennsylvania and extends from James City Junction to James City, a distance of 1.657 miles.

Introductory

[edit]

The Gaffney and James City is a corporation of Pennsylvania, having its principal office at Philadelphia, Pa. It is controlled by the Baltimore and Ohio through ownership of its capital stock. Records do not indicate that this company, itself, controls any common-carrier corporation. The property was operated by the Baltimore and Ohio from September 15, 1914, to December 31, 1917, and since January 1, 1918, by the United States Railroad Administration as part of the Baltimore and Ohio system.

Corporate History

[edit]

The Gaffney and James City was incorporated December 15, 1913, under general laws of Pennsylvania.

Development of Fixed Physical Property

[edit]

The owned mileage of the Gaffney and James City, extending from James City Junction to James City, Pa., 1.657 miles, was constructed during the period from December 8, 1913, to August 1914. The corporate history return of the Gaffney and James City states that 1.48 miles of spur track was purchased under a bill of sale dated April 22, 1914, from The Pittsburg and Western Railroad Company but the records indicate that the road was constructed with funds advanced by the Baltimore and Ohio.

Leased Railway Property

[edit]

The entire property is leased to the Baltimore and Ohio as stated in the report on that company.
