  • Review document: Editing Wikipedia pages 1-5
  • Begin research on feasible Wikipedia topics/pages to edit

    Evaluate an article

    Before you can make your own contributions, it's important to understand how to evaluate an article's quality. Go through the above exercise to learn how to critically read a Wikipedia article.

Welcome to your Wikipedia assignment's course timeline. This page guides you through the steps you'll need to complete for your Wikipedia assignment, with links to training modules and your classmates' work spaces.

Your course has been assigned a Wikipedia Expert. You can reach them through the Get Help button at the top of this page.

Each week you will have REQUIRED and RECOMMENDED blocks to complete to ensure you complete your Wikipedia project successfully. Below you can find this week's tasks.

Week 2

Course meetings

REQUIRED
  • Complete Wikipedia training: "How to Edit: Wikicode vs Visual Editor", "Evaluating articles and sources"
  • Review document: Editing Wikipedia, page 6
  • Settle on two topics and/or Wiki Pages within group to submit for approval on GradeCraft (see Wikipedia Proposal Assignment under Learning through Collaboration)


RECOMMENDED
  • Complete Wikipedia training "Finding your article", this will help you and your team search Wikipedia for an article relevant to your interests
Milestones

This week you and your group members should focus on narrowing down the topic you want to work on for this project. By the end of the week you should submit your collaborative ideas for approval by your GSI.

Week 3

Course meetings

  • Divide work amongst group members to begin research
  • Every member in your group should assign your article to themselves on the Students tab above
  • Complete Wikipedia training "Plagiarism"


RECOMMENDED
  • Review document "Avoiding Plagiarism"
  • If you group decides to cover a topic related to health and/or psychology you must complete the following training "Editing health and psychology topics"

Want to get ahead? Complete training "Drafting in the sandbox"

Milestones

After your topic is approved by your GSI your group should begin researching your topic more in-depth. If your group is having difficulty finding relevant information you may want to consult with the sociology librarian, Hailey Mooney (haileym@umich.edu). You can find her office hours here.

Week 4

  • Continue to research your topic 
  • Review document: Editing Wikipedia, pages 7-9
  • Complete trainings "Drafting in the sandbox" and "Drafting as a group"
  • Discuss whose sandbox you will be working out of. Use this document to find their sandbox.
Milestones

This week your group should begin drafting your article in WIkipedia. This is NOT something that should be left until the last week of your project. Please note: while your group members can all draft in one sandbox, group members will not be able to edit at the same time. You may want to create a schedule with your group for who will be drafting when.

  • While drafting your article, you may want to add relevant content beyond writing. Please consult the following trainings to do so: "Contributing images and media file"
