Latest Club Updates

[edit]
  • Our grant request for the summer semester has been approved by the Wikimedia Foundation! We are now set to host events throughout the summer.
    • If you have any ideas for events for the summer, get in touch with the club officers!
  • Wikipedia Connection is officially supporting HackOHI/O 2016, Ohio State University's largest hackathon that's happening this November. During the Fall semester, we'll be hosting at least one pre-hype event to introduce students to Wikimedia development opportunities with the hope of inspiring Wikipedia-related projects at the hackathon.
  • Even though it's summer, editing doesn't have to stop - reach out to other Wikipedia Connection members if you need help or want to find something to edit.

Member Showcase

[edit]

Here's a showcase of some of the contributions our members have made and the events our members have attended since the last newsletter. Reach out to Kevin if you've made a contribution you'd like featured on the list, or if you'd like some ideas and resources!

Contributions

[edit]
  • Maria Rimmel created an article on Ruthie Tompson, an American animator. The article was created as part of WikiProject Women in Red, a WikiProject whose objective is to create articles on women.
    • Maria's article was featured in the Did you know? section of the main page with the following fact: Did you know that Ruthie Tompson was offered a job by Walt Disney while working at the riding club where he played polo?
  • Kevin Payravi created an article on CoverMyMeds, a Columbus-area company that creates software to automate the prior authorization process.
  • Addis Wang and several other Wikimedians created a video on Wikipedia Asian Month, a month-long online edit-a-thon that Addis spearheaded that resulted in over 6,000 articles being created.

Events

[edit]
  • Kevin received a scholarship and attended the GLAM Boot Camp on behalf of Wikipedia Connection in Washington D.C. from June 14-16. The event was a training workshop for gaining the knowledge and skills necessary to assist with GLAM-Wiki projects, which Kevin hopes to bring back to Ohio State to work with Wikipedia Connection on creating GLAM projects with the University.
  • Kevin attended the Wiki Loved Pride 2016 DC edit-a-thon in the National Archives, primarily improving the article on Rainbow Health Initiative.
  • Kevin, Maria, and Addis Wang (the latter two receiving scholarships) attended the Wikimedia Diversity Conference 2016, a two-day event that facilitated conversation and action on the issues of diversity within the Wikimedia movement. Addis and Kevin also got the chance to present on Wikipedia Asian Month.
  • Addis received a scholarship and attended the annual Wikimania 16 from June 22 - June 28 in Esino Lario, Italy! Addis also hosted a session discussing Wikipedia Asian Month.
  • On June 1, Maria and Kevin participated in the #ArchivesJuly4 Transcribe-a-thon, a three-hour event put on by the US National Archives and National Archives Foundation to transcribe documents related to the founding of the United States.
