The Amerivision Song Contest 1998 was the fourty-third edition of the annual Amerivision Song Contest, organised by the American Broadcasting Union (ABU), host broadcaster Radio Televisión Dominicana (RTVD 4). The edition was hosted in the Palacio de los Deportes Virgilio Travieso Soto, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, as the winning country of the 1997 edition, Suriname, refused to host the event as the country didn't have a suitable venue for hosting the contest, the offer then, was made to the runner up of the edition, the Dominican Republic, that accepted to host the event.
The televote was slighty expanded from the previous edition, aside from the countries that already televoted in the previous edition, now, Colombia, Dominican Republic and Peru also started to use the system.
This edition was also marked by the return of Cuba to the contest, after the longest abstence period in the history of the contest, 41 years, as Cuba's last participation in the contest happened in 1957, it was also the first contest where Chile participated under a new broadcaster, that being Televisión Nacional de Chile (TVN), after the former broadcaster UCV announced it didn't renew it's contract with the ABU to broadcast the contest, and that the 1997 edition would be the last they would take part in.

Relegations
[edit]The relegation system returned to this year's contest, as no countries withdrew from the contest, but Cuba, El Salvador and Haiti returned to the contest.
The relegated nations this time were Belize, Bolivia and Costa Rica.
