Amerivision Song Contest

The Amerivision Song Contest 1995 was the fourtieth edition of the annual Amerivision Song Contest, organised by the American Broadcasting Union (ABU), host broadcaster Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation(JBC). The edition was hosted in the Railway Oval, in Kingston, Jamaica, as the country earned the right to host the contest by winning the previous edition. The chosen venue was an outdoor arena, but the bid was made with the intention of building a roof on it so it could host the contest.

This edition is notorious for being the first and only edition of the contest that the United States didn't participate, due to the fact that the country was relegated after poor results in the previous contests, and also for being the second time ever a host nation won the contest, the first being in 1992, Jamaica won the contest with "Shy Guy", a song that at the time, broke the record for highest score ever achieved in the contest, with 185 points, surpassing the 164 points achieved by "Back to the Island" by Baha Men in 1992.

Host picking

[edit]

Seven jamaican venues bidded to host the event, the italic bids were shortlisted and the bolded bid was the selected one from the shortlist.

Relegations

[edit]

Continuing the relegation method implemented last year, this edition saw three more countries being relegated, those being Dominican Republic, Guatemala and United States

Ricky Martin, the Puerto Rican representative of the 1995 contest, with the song "María". Martin had represented Puerto Rico before in the contest in 1985, as part of the group Menudo, where they finished third place with the song "Hold Me".

Aruba, Ecuador and Paraguay returned to the contest in this edition, however, Bahamas and Bermuda withdrew.
