Forms of account creation in the user creation log

I have noticed three different forms of account creation in the user creation log:

  • "created automatically"
  • "created"
  • "created (iOS App Account Creation)"

What is the difference between "created automatically" and "created"? —Skyllfully (talk | contribs) 00:59, 28 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, of course, but I think that "created" is when someone creates an account here. And "created automatically" is when they create an account on a sister site, like Commons, and the account here is created as part of the global login process. (edit conflict) @Skyllfully: "created automatically" means that the account was orignally created at another Wikimedia wiki, and later created automatically at the English Wikipedia when the user visited here logged in. Not a living person

Henry Hook just died. His article reflects this information, but he is still categorized as a living person. I can't find anything in the page source which causes this; I've even looked at the source for a couple of likely templates. Matchups 02:30, 28 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion record?

Is there an equivalent of Template:Old AfD multi except for speedy deletions? I'm looking to note on a talk page that it was once speedy deleted.--Prisencolin (talk) 02:40, 28 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Lots of articles have been speedied in the past and are fine now. It is common for A7 deletes when the person or thing can't prove significance but then later gets that proof. All deletions are logged so if someone really wants to they can look it up. Yes there is, Prisencolin, it is {{oldcsd}}. When I decline a speedy I often place it on the talk page of an article. The intent is to warn editors before they attempt to place a speedy similar to one that has already been declined. By convention, if the page is expanded to the point where a speedy would no longer be plausible, or if a page is discussed at an XfD and retained, the oldcsd tag is removed, as its purpose is over. However, there is no tag for pages recreated after being speedy deleted, for that, the deletion log serves as mentioned above. @Stabila711: DES (talk) 22:32, 28 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello there, and welcome to Wikipedia. If you want a page created, you can create an account and write it yourself. You might want to read Wikipedia:Your first article if you choose to do this: in particular, subjects of pages must be talked about in reliable secondary sources, so we can establish that they are "notable".
If you don't want to create the page yourself, you can add Ross Diamond (preferably with a few sources establishing notability) to Wikipedia:Requested articles and someone might create the page for you. But be aware that there are thousands of ideas listed at Requested articles and Ross Diamond may not be created for a very long time, if at all, unless you take it upon yourself to write a page for him. Times of events

In articles about events where the time is listed, what is the appropriate time to use? Local time? I ask because the article on the 2015 World Series lists the start times of games in both Kansas City and New York as EDT. Should not the games at Kaufmann Stadium be listed as CDT?    → Michael J    04:24, 28 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

But an article about connected events in different time zones often uses a single time zone. I don't know whether American baseball has a practice here but I suggest you don't make changes without looking at similar articles or discussing it with editors of such articles. Fair point. The last World Series had them all in EDT too. Which is odd, since neither of the teams that played in that series were on the east coast so none of the games used EDT. I'm not American but I think events transmitted live in the whole country often use EST/EDT in US media, maybe because it has the largest population. Wikipedia may just follow that practice. PrimeHunter (talk) 05:13, 28 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
You have a point in that times are often given in EST/EDT for various media events. Sometimes they'll also be given in PST/PDT. I presume that's so that people on the West Coast don't have to subtract 3, or people in the Mountain time zone don't have to subtract 2. They can just add one. Either way, giving times in Eastern is common here in the States. Residents of Anytown, USA are used to doing the math in their head almost automatically. Conversation removed from article talk page

Hi, an editor removed this conversation from the talk page of the chess-related article Blackburne Shilling Gambit, apparently because he was embarrassed that he was looking at the wrong position. This seems a bit irregular to me. Should I restore the conversation so that a record is kept? MaxBrowne (talk) 05:03, 28 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

the record is always kept in the history.
it is not standard process to remove a conversation, but do you find any value in keeping the conversation which has nothing to do with the subject of the article restored on the talk page? if so, restore and collapse it. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 05:34, 28 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Adding coordinates

I'm not sure exactly what you're asking. Yes, putting a {{coord}} template in an article, with appropriate coordinates, is in many cases all that is required. But giving coordinates to six decimal places, as you've done above, is too precise for any but the smallest objects (a particular outdoor statue, for instance); and there are other parameters you can add to the template to improve users' experience (the "region" parameter, for instance, can change the display of the GeoHack page users see when clicking on the coordinates, so that particularly relevant mapping services are displayed prominently). In some cases in which an article has an infobox, there can be an advantage (such as the ability to display a location map) if you enter the coordinates in dedicated infobox fields instead of using {{coord}}. MOS:COORDS contains some handy guidelines; I recommend that you take a look at it. (Sorry if I've misinterpreted the question.) Deor (talk) 14:29, 28 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

List of "model" Wikipedia articles to reference when writing an article?

When improving on an article, I like to use another closely related Featured Article as a guide on how the article should be written, such as sections, lead, etc. I imagine many others use this same strategy. Currently I basically just pick a Featured Article arbitrarily, but I'm wondering, has anyone ever made a list of the "best" archetypal article of each content area (e.g. the best article on a video game, the best article on a type of dance, etc.)? - In the section "Industry": There is no need for a list. It should just read "Recreational Powersports vehicles." If one keeps a list, it will need to be updated because BRP has many more products than those listed on this page. [12]

Why isn't this table becoming sortable?

Hi, I am making a list page in my sandbox; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Sohebbasharat/sandbox/List_of_United_Nations_General_Assembly_Resolutions_adopted_at_its_1st_Session although I have added the "sortable" tag in the table, but it isn't showing arrows for sorting, any ideas? Doesn't like the style="background:#efefef;"| in the column headers. I don't know why, but when I removed those, the table became sortable.

Probably better to replace style="background:#efefef;" | with class="unsortable" | so that those who come after you know that those columns are intentionally not sortable.

Redirect created by move doesn't appear to be working as expected

I created the article Alec Snow. After I noticed that there were some articles linking to that page which were not associated with the person described in the article, I moved Alec Snow to Alec Snow (politician). The move created a redirect page that uses the template {{redr|from move}}, as expected. The redirect appears to work fine. However, pages that link to Alec Snow and the redirect itself do not seem to show up in Special:WhatLinksHere/Alec_Snow_(politician). Slight swerve
I'm torn as to whether this should have a disambiguator. On the one hand, it is the only article for Alec Snow on Wikipedia, on the other hand, the majority of hits for "Alec Snow" on Wikipedia are for articles where the Australian Actor from Home and Away is mentioned, for example, Demi Harman, which has a link to Alec Snow but where it should be redlinked.Naraht (talk) 15:01, 28 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
At the moment, the only article that actually links to Alec Snow (the actor) is Demi Harman. Before I updated the links, there were more links to Alec Snow (the politician). OK - I tried an experiment - I confirmed that the problem was still happening. Then, I removed the template redr from the redirect entry at Alec Snow. The links then showed as expected. Changing Headline

Hello!

I am a novice to Wikipedia which will probably be quite evident when I ask this question (I find the whole process very confusing but perhaps I don't have enough grey matter to understand? Or is it generational? I grew up in the 1980s when will still used typewriters and had to actually carry around those huge encyclopedia volumes!) In any event, I would like to change the title of the article I am writing. How do I go about doing that? Do I have to start a whole new submission? Is it impossible to do? Please advise. Thank you. Articles are moved, which you should be able to do (you have 10 edits and have been here for 4 days). Is it that you want to remove the word Wikipedia in the title, or are you trying to move it to the main article space? (Note, it very much *isn't* ready to move to main article space, with no references).Naraht (talk) 16:51, 28 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Naraht has warned you against moving the draft into article space in its present form, but assuming that what you want to do is to change the title, keeping it in Draft space while you work on it, see WP:MOVE for how to do this. Normally I advise people against worrying about the title of drafts, since that can be sorted out when the article is eventually moved to article space; but I can see why you might want to in this case. --ColinFine (talk) 18:49, 28 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Need help checking an article for notability requirements

I am affiliated with Susan May Warren, an author. I would like her to have a wikipedia article, but I'm pretty sure I don't meet un-baised requirements. She has over 40 books on the market, and I would like to know what threshold of notability she would need, in order to merit a wikipedia article. I have worked on wikipedia before (a long time ago).

Since you have a conflict of interest (and thank you for acknowledging it), you should not write an article about her in article space. If you think that you can write an article about her that is neutral rather than promotional, you may write it in draft space and submit it for review via Articles for Creation, or you can write it in draft space and request its review here or at WP:Teahouse/Questions in the knowledge that neutral editors will remove any peacock or promotional language. Also, in terms of looking for what has happened in the past, a previous version of an article on her were deleted based on the following discussion: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Susan May Warren, I'm not sure what the article looked like at that point. Also there is something that looks like an article in a personal namespace at User:Majestic_Pyre/SMW. Based on that, the RITA Award *may* be enough for an article, but I'm really not sure. The Carol Award on the other hand is much less notable (All of the hits for American Christian Fiction Writers that awards it are by the group, so I don't believe it shows notability.Naraht (talk) 20:11, 28 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It would help if you were to say what article you think contains untrue statements. The only previous edit made by this IP address was three months ago. If you think that an article contains incorrect information, discuss it on the article talk page. If that fails, read the dispute resolution policy and follow one of the routes described in it. If you wish to see changes to the article Henry Sosa, please post your suggestions, with reliable published sources independent of Mr Sosa, on the talk page Talk:Henry Sosa, and add {{edit request}} (with the double curly brackets) to bring your request to people's notice. Help:Cite errors/Cite error references duplicate key

There are a couple of ciation errors at Don't Look Now (refs 6 & 14). They use the sfn notation and are throwing out the message "Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; name "FOOTNOTESanderson199642.E2.80.9344" defined multiple times with different content (see the help page)." I edit this article periodically so the problem could only have materialized in the last few weeks. I have read Help:Cite errors/Cite error references duplicate key, and while it explains the problem it does not seemingly offer a solution for cases involving the sfn template. To be honest I don't really understand why it is happening in just these two instances. Anyway, some help would be much appreciated. Betty Logan (talk) 19:07, 28 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @Betty Logan:, I have fixed it in the article. Some SFNs were included with "p", but should have been "pp". All refs for the same citations need to have exactly the same content. Checking of references with multiple usages in such situations has been recently improved (somewhere in technical Village Pump is a thread about it, see Tech News). If you see such an error ("duplicate ref name ..."), just search for any kind of inconsistency between usages of the same reference, even minimal deviations can cause this message. Missing password and username

If you registered your email on the account, the password can be reset using the email. However, this requires knowing the username. Do you recall any articles or pages you edited recently, and when you edited them? And perhaps what sort of changes you made? DES (talk) 22:14, 28 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
